kennett square restaurants
Depending on the time of day you want to eat, the food at Longwood is surprisingly good. There is also the Longwood Family Restaurant on route 100 about 1/4 mile away.(not part of Longwood Gardens) And a bit on the upper end of your price range, but the one that everyone in the area raves about, is Sovanna Bistro..a 5 min drive at the intersection of 926 and 82.

follow up to March Philly visit
Glad you had a goodtime....even if you didn't have fired clams!.LOL
Glen Mills Whole Foods Market
Finally went........and was,,,,,,,under-whelmed. Nice Cheese and bread selection. Meats and Veggies nothing special. I'm not a big prepared food person, so won't comment. The pasta/chinese/thai/cookie/cracker/BBQ/canned soup shelves held little of interest outside of what I can find at Giants at much less. Maybe Trader Joes and Fresh Foods can still survive. But it was busy on a Monday afternoon.
Sausage filler machines
At the risk of alienating local strores..which I try and support.....may I suggest you look at Sausagemaker.com
http://www.sausagemaker.com/
They have EVERYTHING you need. And if you are over 50 or make lots of sausage, definitely get electric models. My arms ache (I'm over 60) every time I make up 5 lbs of Sausage on their 22 model grinder that is manual
WHOLE fried clams, not just strips
Legal Seafood opened up a branch in the Philly Arpt.between B&C. And my wife who grew up summers in Maine swears by their lobster rolls!
I think it's more a cultural thing than perishabliity. Because of red tides in NE, much of the clam "crop" comes from Maryland and areas around here
All-Clad Outlet in PA?
Cindy..if you're not wedded to All-clad, there are some other good ones. I have had a Cephalon (sp?) one for years that I use for everything from roasts to bacon in the over to Chex Mix. No cover, but i never needed that
WHOLE fried clams, not just strips
Nope..your closest place is Legal Seafood in KoP PA..but i just saw a write-up that they may be screwing around with the batter. I had them at LF in the Philly Airport in Apr and they were perfect
Fried Clams
I am so sorry to hear that!....I had them in Philly Airport on 15 April and they were as fine as ever, so maybe it was just an off night/chef abberration....somethings you just don't wanna mess with!
Inexpensive lunch on road from Philly to Rehoboth Beach, DE
If it's still there.....Helens Sausage House in Smyrna DE can't be beat!..................on rt 13. I have also heard good things about the dutch Restaurant in Middletown DE
Glen Mills Whole Foods Market
I decided to wait until Monday......hopefully by then the furor and wekend warriors will have died down
and..hehe.I always take the backroads to avoid the Gawdzillion lights they now have
Glen Mills Whole Foods Market
My bank is next door and i had to go there this morning. By 9:45 the entire parking lot was filled and there was a line of about 20 cars waiting at the light to turn left. And most of the folks looked like old codgers......like me! So I think I"ll wait until next week
Pennsylvania Foods
In Giants today, I found something called Oh Ryan's Irish Potatoes....basically a confection of cocnut wrapped in cinnamon.very tasty. $4.99 for 15 each about the size of a large marble (7oz)
In 20 yrs of living in Pa (plus 2 back in the 70's) I had never heard of them. I'm sending them to my Siblings for St Pat's day even tho we aren't Irish. Obviously local (made in Philly) and very seasonal

Travelers-PA airport food
I have eaten at Legal Seafood in the Airport several times..as has my wife and can tell you it is cut above.....way abov.....most airport stops! Of course, I go for the FiredClams..juicy with just the right amount of breading. My wife adores their lobster roll. Prices are not cheap, but no more than their landside places. It's noisy and crowded, but what airport place isn't? You could do al ot worse
They are in the mall between Band C.closer to the B end
Glen Mills Whole Foods Market
Not to mention they then charge you "Sales tax" on top
best national brand peanut butter?
HEY!..........perfect post!........Keep them coming..............and since I'm over by Wilmington, where can I find Wamplers locally? I have tried Arrowhead......it's good too. But lately, Something is driving up the price of PB.........so I go more to the store brands for sandwiches, etc
Whole Food Market in Glen Mills
there are ,,,,,,ongoing rumors......that a Costco might also settle in the region...........and lots of talk about Wegmans over the years, but I can't see that now that WF is opening. I'm not a big "prepared food" sort of fan.......but would like some decent bacon, sausage (like Linguica), pastry and cheeses...........we'll see if WF fits the bill
Glen Mills Whole Foods Market
Cindy........stick with Kennett............Yes.there is one in the Acme/Home Depot plaza now with an expanded wine listing, but Kennett probably has as much. The new store is closer to me (I'm behind the Battlefield)......and I'm still an old stick in the mud fan of independent bookstores, so a sojurn to Chester County Bookstore and the State store there usally tides me over. DE liquor stores......well that's a whole 'nother thing!
What's your "secret ingredient?"
I've become a big fan of Miso and miso paste these past few years and use it lots of sauces. It is very subtle...but lovely
Whole Food Market in Glen Mills
any idea how they are doing beer on tap?.they get a restaurant/liquor lic?..with 2 other places in that mall already? and McKenzies Brew House across the street?
Your mom's weird cooking ... and other stories? (recipes encouraged)
I'm going for this one! Although toned down a bit for portions since there are only 2 of us, and using a chicken breast and maybe some prepared Chicken stock. No spices other than salt and pepper? I may need some garlic
Your mom's weird cooking ... and other stories? (recipes encouraged)
No NO!..No vents..but make sure you keep at least an inch of water over the can while you boil it! It actually is quite good as Dulce de leche, provided you watch it
Glen Mills Whole Foods Market
I have only beeen to a Whole Foods once...........in San Rafeal CA. My take is they have lots of interesting stuff, lots of prepared items that look good, portray a "green" image........true or not.......and are pricey. I'll give it a few tries, see what goodies they have. I suspect they will put the Fresh Foods place in Brinton Lakes on their ear and will be fun for specialty items but not for day to day stuff.

and half of my kids' inheritance after I do my shop-through!
Big Fish Grill (Glen Mills, PA)
Thanks for the update! Now I know I"m old!..Growing up on Cape Cod, I only remember Littlenecks, Cherry Stones, and Quahogs (or sometimes "Chowdah") clams. As for the two at the bottom of the list, they were considered "seeders" and you weren't supposed to touch those puppies so they could breed. Guess in the age of "farm-raised" (do they use seahorse and dogfish to corral them?), it's ok to market them.
Big Fish Grill (Glen Mills, PA)
wow........in between the last post and this I went and checked out their menus..........i think I lost a keyboard with all the drooling..........will have to try it out soon. alas...no clams.not even dreaded clam strips........and I saw at least one of their places offers "Manhattan" Clam Chowder (that's Tomato soup with fish for some of us!)....but Oysters and Shrimp looked intriguing!
Now If i can just figure out what a Middle neck clam is........besides some copywiter's wet dream.......... I see it all over google, but as a kid, never heard of it. I assume it's somewhere between a littleneck and a quahog.......what used to be known as Cherrystones, maybe?
Big Fish Grill (Glen Mills, PA)
Dare I ask what they have in the shellfish range? I'm not a big fish-fish eater, but my wife is. A selection of shellfish might temp me down the road.
(ok, I"ll check out their website for offerings....but any comments on their quality?)
Casual but delicious dinner in Wilmington, DE?
The Charcoal Pit that is about 3 miles up the 202 exit off 95 has some of the best burgers and shakes around. They used to be cash only, but think they now take Credit Cards
What's your "secret ingredient?"
I've used Tomato powder in bread, especially at Christmas where I make a braided "wreath" with Tomato powder in one, spinach powder in another and plain white in the third. But other than that, haven't really experimented with it. I have, however found a company that makes peanut powder that I am now trying in lots of recipes, including breads
