Reservations possible for dim sum on Jan 28 in downtown LA?

A large family group would like to see the Dragon parade downtown, and
try to fit in a visit to CBS, Ocean or perhaps Empress Pav. for some dim sum.

Is this workable? I know from past experience it is a zoo during CNY...any tips/info appreciated.

Best combo cheap/good/general Korean in K-town

Title says it all. I'd even consider a buffet if it's decent.

Kevin, aka "Thai Elvis", is very sick

Called Palms Thai last night to see if Kevin, the "Thai Elvis" would be performing next weekend and was told that he'd had a stroke 2 months ago. No other details.

Sorry to hear this and hope he has a strong recovery.

Cheap Chinatown combos

Specifically, the place on the river side of BW that serves combos for $4, plus a few dim sum items (steamed bao, shui mai, shrimp/scallop har gow, sticky rice). As I recall from years ago you posted about several similar places, where old chinese folks go to get cheap stuff.

Cheap Chinatown combos

Howdy,

Been away for awhile, and was wondering what's the status of those super cheap combo joints
you find scattered about Broadway.

Owner of Sorrento's Deli in CC dies

That's him. I heard 2nd hand that he died at the store but am not certain if that was actually the location where he had the heart attack. I believe he died almost immediately but again I'm not clear on these exact details.

The store remained open as of yesterday..

Why this post has been moved away from the board frequented by the vast majority of individuals who would have an interest in it frankly amazes me. Or on second thought, doesn't.

Owner of Sorrento's Deli in CC dies

Albert, owner of Sorrento's Italian Deli (a celebrated specialty shop located for many decades on Sepulveda a bit north of Slauson) passed due to a sudden heart attack last week. Services were held this past Tuesday. No details on the future status of his shop. He is survived by his wife and a son who lives out of state. Condolences to them and thanks Albert for all the many years of great food and friendly service.

What's the Puerto Nuevo Lobster scene like?

Thanks Jan, back in the day the kids used to hang out front and, all smiles, offered to make sure your cars weren't "keyed" for a smal fee.
I'd imagined that with all the drug war craziness that disneyland you described might've become a ghost town.
Pop sounds like it might be worth a visit if I can drum up people brave enough to cross the border, and if I can find a designated guard dog to stay near the cars for a couple of hours.

What's the Puerto Nuevo Lobster scene like?

Back in the early 80s it was a little town consisting of a long white building with a 7-up bottle painted on it, hiding three family-owned restaurants serving that great lobster plus rice and beans. Oh, and there was a little chapel.

I heard it later expanded to house dozens of similar places as word spread throughout the US about the famous bargain lobsters...

But now of course it's a whole different scene in Northern Mexico...Have those tiny joints, and even the town, weathered the problems? Any specific recs? The offerings at the Rosarito Beach Hotel I found, some time back, to be poor imitations of the original.

Where is the "real" cajun/Creole in LA county?

It was awful. Stay away from St. Johns, if it's still there.

Is the temple going to have any festivities this year? So sad they no longer have those booths every weekend...

Cuban seafood lin LA?

Caught a food network show featuring a Miami joint that sold great-looking fried lobster tails etc. Anywhere in Los Angeles I can find something similar?

Source for Cocovia, Acticoa in LA?

Found them at Walgreens. $5.49 for 5 slim dark chocolate bars (100 calories, tasty if brief goodness). Looking forward to the Acticoa line when it comes to the US.

yes cocoavia, i mispelled it in the post. Walgreens supposedly "had seen it" and it may show up this week. haven't checked cvs yet but I was beginning to think the line had been cancelled. certainly hope not.

Source for Cocovia, Acticoa in LA?

These are specialty chocolates that have some impressive research behind them as ways to improve blood circulation. But they've proven hard to find. Their website lists specific stores carrying Mars' Cocovia bars, but the listed Ralphs never heard of them, and the Albertsons and Walgreens didn't have them on hand ("but I've seen them"). Acticoa may not be available in the states yet, though they may be or are soon to be. Anybody seen these two products? I should mention this appears to be the real deal, with lots of independent research behind it.

Great Chinese Experiences?

In fact, we have an entire region (so to speak) of what you're looking for. Search "SGV" or San Gabriel Valley for endless posts on the subject. For starters, Newport Seafood on 835 W. Las Tunas in San Gabriel may fill two of your bills. See recent thread on it. And there's plenty more...

Warm, Gooey Chocolate Chip Cookie Bliss: The Curious Palate

First thing you see when you walk in the door. Only $2 for a nice sized cookie, too. On the right they had some scones, which I didn't try.

Warm, Gooey Chocolate Chip Cookie Bliss: The Curious Palate

Just had one this afternoon. The cookie was indeed excellent and the brownie even better. A superb daily double, and they have a full sandwich board as well. I hope they do well.

Current soup dumpling status

You flipped the Din Tai and Mei Long reviews, obviously. Din Tai has always been "boring" to me, bland and tasteless relative to MLV.

And how can "overpowering" spice be boring? Trite or emasculating or bossy maybe, but boring? sounds like you're reaching for an enemy XLB and the poor folks at Mei Long won the honors.

As for a purported "soup" controversy I can't recall ever seeing any objection, but the phrase is vague enough so that I wouldn't dis anybody for calling it down. Modifiers can have many meanings...you don't have to eat a Denver omelet in Denver, nor do you need a piece of Denver inside it to make one.

Three strikes, yer out!

I'm wondering what the calorie and sodium counts are for the godmother. This is always nice info to have (all the fast food joints do). I think I might be able to come close if I had one in front of me. Their "po-boy" as well for that matter.

Where to eat at Centinela and Sepulveda?!?

Sorrentos is inexpensive and a good value size-wise. They usually have Veal parm cutlets or roast beef, or maybe spaghetti in the hot foods/prepared section along with various cold-cut sandwiches. Several bakery items as well, Euro- candies...

In two trials I found ti pretty bland. If you've made it this far you might want to pop into the Pavillions across the street for sandwiches and other prepared foods.

Dim Sum-Best Cart place in SGV

I think Empress Harbor has long been underappreciated for overall quality.
Ocean Star is kind of fun just for the people watching in a gigantic hall. 888 I've always liked the quality, and the waits I don't recall being too bad. NBC also solid. I guess this post isn't much help ;)

Szechuan restaurant on Washington at Abbot Kinney

It is easily passable americo-chinese fare. I love their steamed dumplings--after I drown them in hot oil. There's nothing particularly "Szechuan" about it that I've noticed, like you might expect in SGV. It's a pu-pu platter and chinese chicken salad-type joint and is fine as far as that goes.
