5 hour layover at LAX - accessible by taxi

Pann's! Get the 1/2 chicken Pann's Special with mashed potatoes and the best gravy on the planet, plus any other side, a buttermilk biscuit and a glass of strawberry lemonade. You won't regret it. Went there last night with a group of friends and it was incredible, again. We keep thinking one day we will try something other than the chicken, because it all looks so good...but we never do.

My second choice would be Three Flames Mongolian Barbeque. Really the only mongolian barbeque in the area that I enjoy. Lots of fresh produce and good quality meat.

Lastly, as some have said above, Houston's does a very good prime rib.

Nickel Diner great downtown food

My brother and I stopped by the Nickel Diner after seeing a show at the Music Center last Friday and we had a great meal. I had the pulled pork sandwich which was great. The pork was tender and flavorful, with just the right amount of tangy barbeque sauce. My bro had the double stuffed chicken, which had a nice mushroom duxelle under the crispy skin. Desert was a fantastic salted peanut choclate cake--quite rich, but not over-sweet like some cakes. One of the owners, Christin, was there and was very personable. I would describe the decor as retro casual. It manages to be hip and laid back at the same time. We had a great night.

Give up on Studio City/Ventura?? a few good spots

That's unusual. I love Skaf's; its some of the best Lebanese food around these parts. I strongly suggest giving them another go.

Ca'del Sole - Review

I really enjoy this place. Love they're ribeye and they did a great burrata and bresaola appetizer last time I was there. I think it would be a great spot for a small wedding .

Finally, Good Indian Food comes to Studio City

You should say all Indian restaurants. I haven't found a reason to eat buffet Indian anywhere.

Looking forward to trying 818 Masala

Best pizza in town - informal opinion poll

I've found quality is much more consistent when Martin is there or one of his veteran employees. Sometimes, the new folks forget to do "well done" or to put the "parmessan cheese to the edge" i've requested. I pick up, so I can check it myself on those occasions when I don't recognize the manager. Maybe a little annoying, but I like their pie better than Dino's when its done right.

Best Coffee in LA

A couple weeks ago I tried the cold pressed coffee at Balcony Cafe in Santa Monica and it was very smooth and not bitter at all. I had never heard of cold pressed coffee before, but it is a treat.

BBQ Master Earnest "Pork Chop" Phillips - West LA

I had the pork ribs and goat today, which were great and we had enough food for 4 people off that $15 combo plate. And the ribs were tender. "Fall off the bone" is right!

Porto's Potato Balls

I've eaten them at a couple of parties that my friends have thrown recently. I think they put them in the fridge and rewarmed them. I can't compare them to fresh, but they were still pretty darn good eats.

good indian eats?

I'll second Woodlands in Chatsworth. Probably the best Indian food I've found in SFV so far.

Food, LAX Adjacent

I'm going to be down near LAX for a convention this weekend and may have need of lunch or dinner spots. Anything good? I'll have my car, so Inglewood, El Segundo and Hawthorne are doable. Anything further is probably better for another day.

Thanks

Best SANTA MONICA cafes or coffee shops to chill?

I got to pimp the Balcony. Individually brewed cups and a relaxed environment for chilling out. Live music one night a week or so; other than that great for reading/studying.

Zankou Chicken still downhill

I always have a good meal at California Chicken Cafe (Mr. Dan: I am assuming this is what you meant by California Chix Kitchen. If I am wrong, let me know). Its just a roast chicken, but nicely seasoned and cooked properly, so that it is still juicy. Side dishes and salads are very good as well.

Zankou Chicken still downhill

It was at the Van Nuys location. Dry chicken. Bland sauce.

Zankou Chicken still downhill

I was nearby and hadn't been in a while, so I ran in for a quick 1/2 chicken. I can report it has not returned to former glory. Still dry and tasteless as it has been since the owner's passing.

Best Coffee in LA

Have to agree with Carter on The Coffee Roaster. I know the ownership is passionate about their beans, but I've been underwhelmed with the cup o' joe they turn out.

Best Coffee in LA

I have always loved Kaffa, great coffee. Latte art. Its a bit far away from me in the SFV though, especially with Cafe Balcony relatively nearby in Santa Monica.

I don't think all that much of Apple Pan. But Jack doesn't no jack about burgers.

Looking for good galactobourico ...

I had the key lime pie at The Palms, Downtown a few weeks ago and it was very good. Custard was silky and the key lime was very pronounced.

Good lunch spots around Ventura and Sepulveda

I have heard that Spumoni closed and is now a place called Risotto. Can anyone confirm? If so, I will miss the daily gnochi specialst at spumoni.

In the Valley.....

Skaf's Lebanese is good. If you can get to Ventura Blvd. and want a little more atmosphere, I would go with Senor Fred. Good upscale mexican food. Room's a bit dark.

Cheap and quick - I would go to Que Rico's for a burrito or across the street at Carnitas Michoacan for tacos.

In the Valley.....

I hate Sittons. I went there with my 5 year old and they left us standing at the door, totally ignored for 10 minutes (place was only 1/2 full at the time). I only got a table when I demanded they seat us. Grab the menu and there is absolutely nothing for children. I left and went to Twain's where I didn't have to spend $15 for a child's meal, half of which was going home in a bag to sit in the fridge for a few days before it got tossed.

The demise of Diedrich's coffee

Seek out Kaffa (or is it Kaffe?) in Orange, near the Childrens Hospital of OC. Great coffee and latte art to boot.

I recently had a terrific meal at Raffi's Place in Glendale. I know its not East Hollywood, but it is one of the best Armenian places around.

a suggestion for Fri & Sat night this week for a bunch of NYers

Water Grill has great seafood, and its Downtown. Ciudad can be skipped.

If you like upscale Mexican, try La Serrenada de Garabaldi in Boyle Heights near Downtown. Terrific flavors including some very nice seafood dishes.

The Hungry Cat?

I hate this restaurant. Tiny, expensive, overly mayo'd lobster rolls. Charcoal encrusted burnt chocolate creme brulee. Horribly uncomfortable patio seating. Why do people like this place? Water Grill is always fantastic. Always fresh. Too expensive you say? Compare the value received to that twinkie sized $22 lobster roll at Hungry Cat and then tell me about expensive.

Or fine, go to McCormick and Schmick's for a great oyster selection and well prepared seafood for much less.

Best Coffee in LA

Cafe Balcony on Santa Monica at Rochester. This place knows coffee. Beans selected with care and locally roasted in small batches. Each cup individually siphon brewed to exacting standards. Of course, you have to go when the owner is there (which is often, thankfully), as some of his managers can't tell coffee from motor oil.

Cafe Balcony is truly a great cup of joe. And they do latte art.

Another stand out is Kaffa, down in Orange. I know it isn't LA proper, but its greater LA. They do latte art here too, by the way.

Sabor y Cultura in Hollywood is very good.

Of the other places mentioned so far in this thread. Peet's is pretty darn good for a regional chain. It's better than Urth (good for tea, coffee's not bad), Priscilla's, Coffee Roaster (I've tried to like it, but I don't).
