Does anybody know where I can get a whole Alpaca or Llamma to cook. ALSO how much$$$$

You are giving snakes a bad name. The 2 we boarded, fostered for a winter were ratty with each other 85% of the time. The remaining 15% of the time they were far nastier. We easily prefer the snakes on our small farm.

Yeast Bread recipes using a #10 can

There are a few cans still out there without the BPA lining, even fewer without the pull top. They do rust fast is another reason they are in limited use.
X some European brands of coffee in small cans and very few others.
Can advantage?,a tall round shape, they get hot so you have great crust colour.A beautiful presentation for brioche and easy to slice.

I would second what ElenadeUSA says below. For years MONKEY BREAD was baked in terra cotta flower pots or BUNDT PANS.The first MONKEY BREAD pan introduced was nothing more than a plant pot without the drain hole at a rediculous price.

Yeast Bread recipes using a #10 can

For thirty years I have used them for brioche and other egg-butter-yeast breads with one exception,a Savarin. No oven temp changes.A bit more time than in the standard flute pan.
With practice they are useful and the price is right.Rust spots show up fast at the price who cares.A bit extra oil, butter etc for pan prep and if a loaf sticks a bit, just open the bottom and push.

Worst Kicthen Gadget???

I am surprised about your sad experience.I was sent one to try back at original release. After just 3 or 4 uses I promptly bought one for my larger mixer and 6 for Christmas gifts that year.Still used and liked by all.

Question: Storing Potatoes and Ripening Tomatoes

All the tests results on potato storage, cool and dark, the refrigerator came out #1 winner.
That said,I don't refrigerate.Until this year I used a cardboard box, layers of paper in the basement. Here the basement is dry and never passes 70*f.Careful as can be still included sprouting.
We simply don't know the age of or storage conditions prior to purchase.Creating a huge variable for home storage. My luck varied from good to bad,no matter what.
By accident I tested last year, autumn, winter, spring with potatoes I grew.In boxes with paper, dark and cool, managed poorly half the time by me,were great until we ran out in March. This year planted a lot of potatoes, counting on the same results.
I am too damn lazy to wrap tomatoes except as a last resort and yes it does work.
If you have the space or place to :I pull the whole plant up and hang it upside down when the threat of frost is real.basement, garage etc.The plant got too big,cut a laden branch and do the same thing.

Fish sauce - love it or loathe it?

love it,can't imagine the pantry without fish sauce or anchovies

Budget challenge...ever been done here

I think the input so far improves the idea.
I can't/won't craft a model and likely can't/won't play.I am a trained chef,F&B trade on a small farm now producing 85%+ of our table in the $ sense.Add bambi to our domestic meat = an unlimited supply. We gift meat and vegetables etc.
Buy legumes, rice, hard pasta, barley etc at less than retail,60% of our dairy needs at Costco.
Barter in and out 40% of dairy and some meat or mushrooms.

And so much sample salumi and cheese I give 20% to others.

Your disappointing purchases from Costco

My solution to small sample,or not right away will stink stuff destined for return.Call customer service, your location, explain problem,10# onions, nasty.I can't store something llike this for ?days until next trip.Answer, save bag and receipt, take name and never any problem.

Where to buy rice clay jar in (Eastern) North America?

Tennis ball to grapefuit size is easy here in DC 10% of the time only.Little ones make great salt jars etc.
Once watching the inventory go up and down I asked about large jars.Received complicated answers.Real persistance got my size on the next ?order.I don't think they have any interest here in stocking them.A by product, filler with other ?orders.

Where to buy rice clay jar in (Eastern) North America?

Yes and no down here in DC.Our Asian markets culturaly cross pollinate with goods and food. And in the 21st century carry fewer of old fashioned traditional kitchen goods that have a MODERN replacement.

MAC knife: Piece broke off during use... What happened? and What to do?

there is a lifetime warranty on some MAC knives, worth looking into

Budget challenge...ever been done here

good idea,yes
how to craft it here at CH I'm clueless

Along a similar line.EGullet, another site, in the past did a fun/friendly challenge regarding pantries, freezers etc. and not shopping for 1 week.Use up what you have, supplement minimally and let us know how you did.
Some of the recipes were creative to say the least.

Is American Kobe REAL Kobe??

To say Wagyu cattle are only represented in the US as crossbreed/mixed breed just isn't true. There are Wagyu crosses out there to build the breed into herds more quickly.Black Angus isn't the only or number one example in developing mixed herds.

What is the most ridiculous recipe suggestion you have ever read on the "back of the box"?

What is the most ridiculous recipe suggestion you have ever read on the "back of the box"?

But sugar and cinnamon were costly and most citrus was nearly luxury goods out of the growing area and season by any standards at that time.
There are many mock, frugal etc recipes in my century plus cookbooks. With a little help from my history of food books they make sense,Lent and countless other fast days that were on the calendar at the time.

What is the most ridiculous recipe suggestion you have ever read on the "back of the box"?

thanks
reads like a waste of even bad pastry crust and oven time

What is the most ridiculous recipe suggestion you have ever read on the "back of the box"?

my question was literal, not a definition question about mock
I was curious, with Ritz dry what else makes up the filling and perhaps why then is it called "Mock Apple Pie"

What is the most ridiculous recipe suggestion you have ever read on the "back of the box"?

please,what is "Mock Apple Pie"

What is the most ridiculous recipe suggestion you have ever read on the "back of the box"?

In the early 90's,Land O' Lakes unsalted BUTTER pound box.Was a recipe for oatmeal-raisin
cookies on the inside of the box.No butter in the ingredient list, instead MARGERINE.

Called the 800#,? me-what gives ? answer, isn't there a coupon for our new, healthy non-butter product in the box? me,no ..We will be glad to send you some coupons.Me,no thanks, butter is my preferred only choice. The customer service rep was ? that I still used butter considering the health risks etc.All while her paycheck is signed by a BUTTER company.

I was annoyed enough to not have bought LoL butter since.

food prep tragedies

All of the critters here, dog, cats,Mynahs are ruinous around pies.I never leave them out to cool without closing kitchen doors.Pastry crust is just too tasty.I bake all the scraps for treats.

Bourdain vs. Deen

Nor I about the squeam. No counter or table begging, mooching here. The plates when all are done is the trade off treat. We don't get pestered.

Power Requirement for Chest Freezer?

considering both folks don't have much other option I will gift these
Really good ones for their electronis/computers paid off with the "renters insurance" policy.

Where to buy rice clay jar in (Eastern) North America?

some maybe where to find

you may find searching for Onggi Pots,Yesan Earthenware Rice Jars and Kimchee Pots will help a bit more

as may http://www.alibaba.com

your picture is of traditional Onggi Pottery, close would be Yesan Earthenware

Here, the Maryland suburbs of Washington DC at the more traditional, older Korean Markets. Jars like your picture turn up every now and then in various sizes-tennis ball to large melon Rarely do the big 2-3 ft tall ones for kimchee appear.

Also "KOREA TOWN" in New York maybe a source.A post in the correct ? NYC or Outer Boroughs board may help.

In your area of Canada there are several importers of Japanese ceramics that I deal with and will ask later this AM.

Don't rule out asking the South Korean Embassy in Canada. The staff is flattered and often very helpful.I have had great success with that route all over the world for products etc.

Filaments in Pickled Vegetables

the egg batter, maybe?albumen?,egg white threads?some sort of thing going on with the proteins separating?
I know I've seen white, cloudy.lumpy stuff in pickled pigs feet and never in herring.

burning hands

NITRILE gloves (latex free),available in many weights, disposable to very heavy is the answer for most latex allergies. If talc or flock lining are a problem, free of is out there but harder to find.

Propane ovens, is a slight smell of propane during preheat normal?

That is true of the stove top burners here:both propane from the factory THERMADORE,WOLF < 3 years old & 1 converted, retired VULCAN 25+ years old, however not quite the same for "oven",one has very specialised ignition, mix needs to be "right" to sense and light(extreme ignition safety?),the other was a final adjustment on site, they wanted to be perfect to altitude. Some of the modern high end stuff is ?,prima donna ish. Not like the old behemoths MONARCH and FIVE STAR I grew up with.

Propane ovens, is a slight smell of propane during preheat normal?

not a bad sign, but a sign that you don't have the ideal ratio..gas/oxygen for clean burn so you wind up with soot

Like you I must be hyper-sensitive to propane,I avoid the living room two or three places.

We didn't heat all winter with the furnace.Instead, lucky here,we could wrap the pipes with tape that delivers current. All easy access, vertical in a shower stall size column center of house with three full baths and kitchen fanning off.The old coot we bought from really thought some stuff out.

"If I have _______ in my kitchen, I can eat."
