Amsterdam Falafelshop vs Maoz

I just moved to Washington and I love falafel and am trying to better understand the scene here. Maoz is obviously a franchise and well known and I like their food. Seems like Amsterdam (haven't been yet) is a Washington institution that people love. What are everyone's thoughts? Someone said Amsterdam is looking to franchise - will they be able to beat Maoz?

Indian Lunch Buffet

I am looking for the best Indian Lunch Buffet in Manhattan - a balance of price, excellent food quality and selection, and good options for vegetarians too (yes, I know Indian food inherently is veg friendly. What I mean is not just aloo gobi and very basic veg food). Thoughts? I hear Tiffin Wallah and Dhaba are excellent.

Vegetarian in HK

No Indian...I eat it all the time. I am staying in North Point but will be traveling around the areas and focusing the evening towards Kowloon and Tsim Tsa Shui. Chinese style food or Pan asian would be recommended. But 1 Indian place here or there also helps as I am traveling with my parents who probably need to get their Indian comfort fix

A good value dim sum suggestion would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Vegetarian in HK

I am a vegetarian and looking for the best recs in HK. I have checked out Happy Cow, but any insider tips?

In Calgary over the holidays. What's vegetarian friendly and worth eating?

Oh and one more cool option. Joeys Tomatoes can substitute some of their chicken and beef dishes with a soy based protein, and it works very well with the butter chicken!

Best fries in Calgary?

I have to admit, I love the french fries at Costco. I live in the states and Costco's down there dont have french fries. The ones here have the perfect crisp with some sort of batter, the inside is soft, and the quantity is perfect. Besides Costco, what other places have good fries? I used to love the spicy shoestring fries at Arby's...havent had them in a while. I am not a fan of Peter's Drive in fries. NY Fries are good.

thoughts?

Mawson, I too am vegetarian and am visiting Calgary for the holidays. I am a big fan of Thai Tai's Buddha sandwhich (i think better than Kim Anh's), the Coup, and Buddha's Veggie (awesome fake meat chinese food).

Montreal Recommendations

A party of 8 guys are coming to Montreal next weekend and will be staying at the Sofitel. We are looking for a decent dining experience where restaurants are a hip, nice place to be, good food and great vegetarian options (and not just nicely laid out boiled vegetables). If you can kindly provide your top fairly expensive location and the other being a well priced restaurant.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Help: Resto that can handle large groups and Veg Friendly

Hey chowhounders, a large group of classmates (15-25) are planning on getting together. We are looking for a restauarant that has great food in Manhattan, that can accomodate a large group with either a prix fix menu or a price per head (makes it easier to coordinate), and may be a place that is offering specials given the economy! We have about 5-6 vegetarians so want to be mind ful of them where they have some good, decent options that arent salad.

Any help is much appreciated!

Various Vegetarian Places

Very helpful. I love Pukk for Thai and Candle 79 in general. I didnt like Lan Cafe as all the food was flavorless or had no association to the real thing. I really like Atlas Cafe and Curlys Veg, but they are general veggie places. I miss Vinh Loi Tofu from LA which was a 100% veg vietnamese place and was amazing! People who eat the real pho (with raw beef) came there because it wasd good. LA also had a great place in Glendale that had substantive Middle Eastern entrees beyond just veggies on rice, falafels, and tabouleh.

Thanks for the rec on Papacitos. I checked out some reviews and that is EXACTLY what I am looking for. I love mock meat and that is what they have. I cant wait to make a special trip to Brooklyn just for tacos.

I only wish someone whould start making Indian food with seitan and gluten.

Various Vegetarian Places

Hi there! I am looking for :

1) Vegetarian Pho (and more vietnamese items like veggie banh mi and hu tieu)
2) Vegetarian mexican place (beyond just substituting beans with beef)
3) Vegetarian middle eastern food - beyond just a falafel and hummus. (I know middle eastern food have a lot of side dishes that are vegetarian, but I am looking for more main dishes - like soy kibbeh, etc).
4) vegetarian italian beyond just pasta.

I love fake meats and if your suggested restaurants serve them, all the better!

Medellin

I am going to Medellin at the end of the month with the "boys". One of the nights is our best friend's birthday and I want to show him THE BEST medellin has to offer in terms of a restauarant and then a club (he is single). What is recommended. Please suggest nice restauarants that has a "people watching" scene and that may be a little veggie friendly.
Any other recommendations for the other 3 nights?

Bukhara or Peshawari [Moved from International board]

I ill betaking lots of people to India during the winter holidays ad we are looking to have a great dinner. I have wonderful things about Bukhara, but I heard it is a slight notch above the Peshawari chain (sister restauarants). Is buhara more expenisve? If so, is it worth the extra $$. I dont want the group to hit the same type of meals over again. Please help!

Veg Soon Tofu (Tubu) in Boston

I am looking good soon tubu in the cambridge, allston, brighton area. I am a vegetarian and I used to have this dish/soup once a week in LA. Any places you suggest? I saw that Koreana had some, but a focused Soon Tubu place would be better. Good "pan chan" would be nice.

indian groceries in calgary

I am surprised no one has mentioned FALCONRIDGE. Do this, go to the corner of 52nd street and MckNight in the NE and you will be in Little India. There you will find tons of places with Indian groceries. Indian Pooris. There are a few type. For those who dont know, Poori is basically fry bread. However, there are a couple of type. There are small ones that are used in snacks (ie dahi puri - yogurt crisps) and these pooris are small and hard and crispy. I woudl suggest OK general food store or Fruiticana/Apna Punjab. They should have them Maybe 20 pieces for $2 or so.
