Buying Wine - Pet Peeves
Sam,
I assume you don't like the enviromental aspects of the stryro shipper. The problem is they will not go away as they are the most reliable.
I hope everyone re-uses these. I will usually sell mine to a wine shop a low rate so they can reuse them.

Nothing like mis quoting the critics scores. I love the 92-95 points and then using the 95 score.
Even worse putting 93 points on a wine and it is really 90. No excuse for this!

Lazy staff members including owners
Owners who don't invest in educating their help
Old wines that have been sitting around forever that are marked up at silly prices
Seeking Advice for Inexpensive Whites
drumwine is correct with the Dr. L Riesling.
A little bit cheaper try hogue riesling from Washington which has a bit of sweetness
Time to hit Trader Joe's for wine!!!
Maybe it is me but what is the joy of Trader Joe's for wine. Any good shop in Minneapolis will beat them in price and certainly selection.
I don't get it but of course I spend a ton of time researching wine and cherry pick the best deals.
Morton's: BYO or order from wine list?
corkage fee. there list is very poor for what they are charging. we brought in a 2001 Insignia which I paid less then $80 and they wanted $325 (without tax, tip).
RAVE - KOZLAKS IN SHOREVIEW MN
Open to the public. Wine Streets is doing a high end Burgundy tasting but I don't have a date at $100 a head which is a steal considering the wines they will be pouring. Great deal on the couple event.
With the economy everyone is offer great deals.
dinner in West Des Moines?
Biaggi's is good American Italian food. I do a lot of corporate events in Eden Prairie and people like it and I am doing an event in Des Moines really soon.
It is always reliable.
2007 Oregon Pinot Noir, colored water?
The 07 Patty Green Wines are impressive for the vintage.
Chez Daniel - MSP
I have been there a few times and I would as Anne suggest try something else. They are not doing well as I get buy one get one free from a few flyers that come in the mail.
It is average food at best.
Has my wine gone bad
I bought a bunch of Joh Jos Prum from the 2002 Vintage a month ago and they had been sitting at a wine shop with room temp and beyond for a long time period.
They were all fine and good German Rieslings as Brad said can take a little more abuse.
Make sure to chill and let warm up in the glass for 15 minutes as people serve their whites way too cold.

Rehearsal Dinner, also in Mpls
Braemar Golf Course in Edina is a great spot that is inexpensive to rent and then you can bring in your own catering. Call Amy Smith at 952-826-6791 for more info.
I do a lot of corporate wine events there when the company has a strict budget.

Big E hope to see you at the CDP tasting a week from tonight. These tastings are the best in town for the money.

sno,
Thanks for posting this. I plan corporate event dinners and wine tastings and this would be a good venue. Still can't believe the price as so many mid level restaurants try to max what they can get out of anyone walking through the door.
RAVE - KOZLAKS IN SHOREVIEW MN
I am impressed with that price which comes out to $38 per person. That is a steal and I am sure it was a Saturday night to boot. Congrats!
High End Resto in downtown Minneapolis
How many people are you having at the event? Is wine a concern? A few questions to help you with the best choice.
Best Chardonnay $20 or under?
My favorite in the range is the Chateau Ste. Michelle Indian Wells and Canoe Ridge line. They have a bit of oak but taste well beyond their price.
Restaurant Wedding in Minneapolis?
Raforce,
Legally anyone with a liquor license will have to allow you to bring in wine. I work with a ton of venues in town and have the ability to lower corkage fees.

I love German red wine my favourite red is a dornfelder
At my tastings German Riesling is always the groups favorite wine even with killer $80 Bordeaux and Cali Cabs in the mix. The big thing about people who hate German Riesling is that they don't apply a tasting process so they think it is sweet.
Once i teach the tasting process they understand good Mosel and Rhine Rieslings are much more of a sour taste and it opens their eyes to the importance of properly tasting wine.
German Riesling is no doubt the best value in the world in my opinion.
Restaurant Wedding in Minneapolis?
As mentioned by snob. check out pricing on liquor. If you can buy wine at a discount via the Blaisdell Manor you are saving tons. I event plan for large corporations and we bring wine into all venues and I save them thousands and we drink the best wine so do pay attention to that option.
MSP- MSP Mag Best BBQ
Redstone must have put a big add in the magazine that month. It is hard to take their selections of anything serious.

Manny's Restaurant of the Year? [MSP]
And the price of the meal is off the charts. I would rather eat at Broders Pasta Bar and Heidi's for the same price.
Decanting 101 please
Depending on what you are drinking decanting will open up better wines.
I get asked this question all the time and really even some bottles under $10 can improve by decanting.
Experiment with it by pouring a glass and sampling it. Decant and try again in an hour, two, etc. This will help you examine the wine over the course of an evening.
The other thing to decant in your glass is to swirl it for 30 seconds which should release the aromas of the wine.
All this is for nothing if you don't smell and properly move the wine around in your mouth and hit all the taste buds.
Manny's Restaurant of the Year? [MSP]
I was a little surprised at Manny's getting the Restaurant of the Year from the Star and Tribune.
The steaks to me have never been any better then Morton's or Ruth's Chris and the dessert portions are out of control. Sides are sides that anyone could make.
Anyone know why they would put a steakhouse as restaurant of the year?
Mass Market: Which are legit? Ravenswood, Kendall Jackson, Robert Moddavi, Columbia Crest, etc
Columbia Crest does make good wine for the price point. The Two Vines Series especially Vineyard 10 is amazing for the money. Kendall Jackson Chardonnay again for the money is quality.
Not a fan of the Mondavi Private Selection wines as they are not in the class of Columbia Crest.
He avoids these reds/whites under $20...What say you?
"(also Champagne, but $20 won't do it there)"
You are almost correct. I recently purchased NV Piper Heidsieck at $19.34 a bottle and it as better then most NV Champagnes under $50.
