Wurst - Calgary German Beer Haus
Just to clarify, those foods are what I am hoping for. The site doesn't mention whats on the menu.
Wurst - Calgary German Beer Haus
From Gilchrist this morning, looks like a German Beer House if finally coming back to Calgary. In the old Wildwood/Gasthaus location.
I pray they don't screw it up. So much potential I am hoping for. Homemade kase spaetzle, knoedel, multaschen, boots of beer, steins. Please.
Too many German places run by 60 year old grannies in this city. Well, all of them.

Anybody ever been to the italian restaurant attached to the gas station on Kensington near crowchild?
I read wonderful things. Went there and thought terrible things. Told the friends that it was this little hole in the wall with great reviews. Embarassing. Sponsored by ragu.
Looking for kid friendly restaurants in YYC, help!
Brava Bistro was good with our kids. They sat us near the kitchen and even had a box of toys for the kids to play with. Its really loud in the restaurant so it drowns out and child screams.

Brava Bistro

Chicago Chophouse, Calgary
I thought it was common knowledge that if you don't appear to work out 7 days a week (all 7 on your upper body) or have platinum blonde hair you are going to be treated like garbage at a vickers establishment. You dodged a bullet because the food their is awful. Belgo, Ceilis and Chophouse must have a central fry deep frying location because everything has that same 3 month old oil grease flavour.
Without salt butter and oil, the chefs at the chophouse wouldn't know what to do. I'd rather eat at the Pied Pickle.
Chicago Chophouse, Calgary
Really dodged a bullet there. I think Vickers could be found serving human flesh at his restaurants and he would still make money hand over fist.
Marshmallow Peeps in the YYC
Alpine Sausage next to the Glamorgan bakery (wonderbread factory) had had them.
Phil & Sebastian Marda Loop OPEN!
Yup, sipping a coffee right now from there. Very minimalist inside. Sure beats my Flavia bile at the office.
Anyone know how much that coffee machine is worth? Just curious. The clover one too?
Kid-friendly in Calgary NW?
Took the three year old to Brava Bistro. They had a box full of toys for him to play with and a nice private-ish booth in the back, with no reservation. Treated us great and we did to by keeping things in control and fast and a good tip. Probably good to go quite early to miss the evening rush out of courtesy. But not in the NW.
SoHo Bar & Grill, Calgary
I work in that area of downtown. Its not very good. It is fondly known as So-so to everyone. When asked to be taken out to lunch, no one feels it is too rude to suggest somewhere else.
Stick to the appetizers.
As a bar not sure, but you are sure to be greeted with many piles of vomit and cigarette butts when you walk by on Monday mornings, so I guess its pretty good.
best pizza in calgary?
Where do you get it at COOP? At that deli area on the south end of the store, they just cook it to order? How much is it?
Best Pho in Calgary
Tried there once and it was terrible. The teenage cook that you could see from the front was necking with some girl in the back.
Best Pho in Calgary
There is a new vietnamese joint going in to where Bottoms Up pub used to be on 17th Avenue and about 31st Street SW. Called something like Cochochine.
Yahoo!! Il Centro The Best Italian Pizzas In Calgary & for that matter Western Canada
It truly is a bizarre place. Just a non-descript, Calgary, industrial area lunch hole. Il Centro is like Thom Yorke, an ugly, bitter, old douchebag that produces beautiful art (in the form of pizza). Clearly the owners have no interest in "becoming a million dollar business" which is fine. I just don't think they know what a unique gem they have, nor do they care. They probably pull an honest $100k out of there a year and that is A-OK. If they only realized that Pizza 73 has 187 locations in Calgary and sells reams of complete crap. I respect that they don;t care but selfishly I wish they franchised out so I could eat it twice a week and so does my cardiologist (I actually have a cardiologist so that is not some metaphorical bollocks (but in Canada Cardiologists don't profit from heart attacks so ahem)).
new resto: Belfry in YYC?
Ya its not bad at all, one of the waitresses from Murphs was kinda peeved she had to wear the skirt, but it is nothing like the Vickers garbage. Not really skirt, more girl-kilts.
new resto: Belfry in YYC?
I believe it is the same chef (cook) that was at Murph's prior. Definitely more pub than gastro. They are not serving off the full menu yet, just some basics and the pizza although they do bring the menu to the table. Prices are pretty good, although not as cheap as Murph's usd to be. I had a Spicy Chicken sandwich and it was alright. Tastes pretty much the same as how Murph's tasted (albeit this opinion was based on this one dish). Caught a glimpse of the pizza and it looked the exact same as Murph's was.
Completely different place though, you would never recognize what used to be there, amazed at how fast they renovated too.
Waitresses in the skimpy short skirts, although our was missing a few important teeth.
Calgary Farmers market
I don;t even mind the pies but have never been a fan of in your face marketing, I'm a shy person and don;t want unnecessary chit chat. I actually feel bad to turn someone down so I avoid the situation.
Also, I am the guy with the Valco stroller, but I am the guy trying to chase my wife who is scurrying around touching everything, I usually end up waiting outside in a huff (at the wife) due to the fun involved in navigating the market and trying to keep that #$%^^&% stroller out of people's way. and yes the child is much less annoying in that boat than me trying to control him wirelessly with a broken remote control.
Calgary Safeways
I was in the Us last week and my weak theory about Calgary being the most expensive chicken place was verified (weakly of course). Chicken is the cheap meat on the menu, whenever there was any dish where you could pick beef or chicken it was way cheaper for chicken, the grocery stores were way cheaper, at least 50% of the price up here.
I don't know what it is and safeway is the worst for some reason, don't even buy breasts from there anymore, just deal with the greasiness of thighs and other bits.
It is puzzling.
Calgary Farmers market
Am I the only one who dreads waling past that NE corner where you have to do the "No I don't want a taster of you pies" gauntlet, ya probably I am. Wish I could get a no thanks to the pie button to wear.
Taco Del Mar - no fish tacos in Calgary
Curious about what it matters if he was east indian, also, is East India a country I am unaware of?
Good Pate?? Calgary
I swear by the Wild Boar Pate by Valbella meats, can find it all over the city at various spots but I am sure you have tried it before, mind you I can only compare it to the gross goo that Safeway brand that tastes very funky.
Anyone tried La Viena lately? - Calgary
Went there a few years ago, brought some people and was hyping it as this hidden jewel or so I had heard. It was unremarkable, don't remember anything other than I'm not going back. Maybe if I lived next door and didn;t feel like cooking something, but you can really tell the owner is the old chef of chianti. 8 different pastas and 3 different sauces lets you have a massive menu with all the possible combinations.
New York Pizza in Calgary..... anywhere???
You are right, don't remember the sauce at all because it was not what they were about. I know its supposed to be about the ingredients and most importantly bread but when they are lacking like I believe they did in this case, the sauce can sometimes fill in and make it a "pizza-loaf". It really is a different food that shouldn't even share the same name.
Didn't have cappucinos, didn't like coffee until I had one at Artigiano a year or so ago and though, oh, so that's why people drink the stuff, it can be good.
New York Pizza in Calgary..... anywhere???
I didn't like Pimentos at all, the crust was very average, sort of like the Pilsbury crust you get out of those little cardboard tubes in Safeway. Like a homemade crusty you could imagine a Calgary mother making in the 80's. The sauce was pretty bland too. Went way out of the way for the pizza too and unfortunately won't be going back. Maybe it was a bad day. Why can't we get good thin crust here, spent a week in the italian/french riviera years ago and had pizza at every single non-breakfast meal never at the same restaurant and I regret not having it more. Anyone want to recreate those pies in this city, you have an investor here.
Dinner in Calgary with 2 kids Sat Nov 8th
So it would be kid-friendly? Is it nice and loud to drown out my kids potential loudness? Real tough to find a decent restaurant you can take young kids to without being terrified of them doing something to offend fellow customers.
Fresh Kitchen - Marda Loop Calgary
Had a coffee (capuccino) here yesterday. Just awful, one of those coffee's where you actually feel offended that they sold it to you. Why buy an expensive machine if you are just gonna run garbage through it. I didn't realize they used Canterbury until reading this thread now, that is the stuff my old work used to serve up, stopped drinking coffee for 5 years because of that stuff. Makes you question the rest of the food if they allow that stuff to be sold.
Maurya or Tandoori Hut (Cgy)?
I would have liked to see what you would have said had he told you he really likes Montana's.
Chinese Buffet in Calgary
Sounds like my parents, does cheese mean, chedder or Whiz or Single? Do spices mean salt and possibly even pepper. This story is about our moms:
http://www.theonion.com/content/news/area_grandmother_tries_indian_food
I would second the regency palace suggestion, but would like to know some others. Also is there such a thing as 'high-end' chinese food? in Calgary?
best steak in calgary
Had a steak at the Chicago Chophouse last week with there new menu. Still not great. Greasy and way too much salt, and I LOVE salt.
