Meal Delivery in Venice?
Hi everyone.
I am looking for a recommendation for a meal delivery service. I would like to buy a few dinners for a friend who is on bedrest. Ideally this would be a service -- although I would be open to a restaurant if it was really good.
I did a search and Paleta came up. Anyone have any experience with them or any other ideas?
Many thanks.
private dining room for 16 in SF?
I'm looking for a restaurant with a private dining area that holds 16-18 people for a birthday dinner. Open to any price range or area of the city (southern marin might work too)...Thanks!
Catering for Hawaiian BBQ?
Anyone have any recommendations for a caterer that specializes in Hawaiian food? Unfortunately location rules out roasting a pig so we are most likely looking for a place to pick up trays of barbecued meat, macaroni salad, etc...
Any experience with catering from the following: Da Kine's BBQ, Hawaiian Drive Inn, Ono BBQ and Hukilau? Any other options out there? Or anyone know what ever happened to the people that ran the Hawaiian BBQ place on Rte 1 in Half Moon Bay?
Thanks in advance.
Dinner with Dad? Need recs similar to Firefly, Liberty Cafe
I'm looking for a recommendation for dinner with my dad who's in town for the weekend. He likes solid neighborhood restaurants, not overly exotic or fancy just great food, nice atmospheres. Oh and nothing too loud.
To get an idea of his tastes, we've enjoyed Garibaldi's, Firefly, Liberty Cafe and Plump Jack Cafe (although that was a few years ago).
Any ideas? Thanks.
Special dinner in Salt Lake
I want to get a gift certificate as a wedding gift for someone currently living in SLC. I'm looking for something really special, a meal they wouldn't normally treat themselves to. Not too stodgy, just phenomenal food. Any suggestions for a memorable meal? I did some research and came up with Bambara, Cucina Toscana, Metropolitan and Takashi. Any standouts? Am I missing anything in my list? Many thanks in advance.
Location for bday dinner for 20?
That's a great idea but......unfortunately we just went to a group dinner there and most of the people that were there will also be invited to our bday dinner. I agree the sharing aspect of all those fondue pots makes for a fun party. I'd love to try to recreate something similar but am stumped for ideas.
Any great Ethiopian in SF? Casual sit-down Mexican that has good food?
Also, thanks for the A16 idea, whiner. If we do a weekday I'll definitely look into it. I do love their pizzas....
Location for bday dinner for 20?
I'm in need of a location for a birthday dinner for 15-20 people. I'm thinking a separate room might be good but is not a necessity. To give an idea of our tastes, some of our favorite restaurants are Little Star, Pizzetta 211, Firefly and Aziza. We did something similar a few years ago at Suppenkuche and it was perfect, now looking for something new. Oh, and a handful of the diners are vegetarian so some options for them would be great. Thanks.
Anderson Valley Beers
I'm not sure about Anderson Valley beers specifically but the Toronado on Haight Street has one of the best (if not the best) beer selections in town. Some good eats nearby too.
bday sushi meal in sf on monday?
My husband's birthday is this Monday and he really wants to go out for sushi. (We rarely go out for sushi since I'm a vegetarian.) We'd love to try something new, but I'm not sure where to begin. Any suggestions? We live in the Outer Richmond but are willing to travel. We're open to both traditional and more hip/trendy options -- as long as the food is good. Also, I'd love it if there was a vegetarian option or two :)
One more question: is it true that the fish market in SF is closed on Mondays so it's not the best day to go out for sushi?
veggie bastilla/basteeya at aziza?
I'm a vegetarian and have had both the root vegetable couscous and the charmoula at Aziza. I would recommend the couscous over the charmoula which was a bit too sweet for my taste -- even when topped with a poached egg.
AOC or Upstairs 2?
I'm an out-of-towner in need of an LA restaurant to give a gift certificate to. The recipients are definite foodies and big-time wine lovers. "Hipness" definitely not a priority. They live in Venice but would happily travel for a great meal. Having done a preliminary search, it seems like AOC and Upstairs 2 might fit the bill. Any preferences between the 2? Or other suggestions? Thanks.
New Yogurt Bar on Octavia at Union
just checked it out. now they have 4 flavors. today it was blueberry, strawberry, plain and green tea. had a taste of the strawberry and it was just plain nasty, very artificial tasting. went with plain with fresh raspberries on top and it was pretty good. maybe because the girl behind the counter really heaped on the fruit.
mitchell's or bi-rite creamery ice cream cake?
yes, they were from birite, although they may have brought them over from the store -- didn't see any out with the cookies and brownies. we got some carrot cake, chocolate and banana ones. Nothing spectatular, especially when compared to the ice cream!
mitchell's or bi-rite creamery ice cream cake?
Thanks for the responses. Went to BiRite Creamery to place my order for an ice cream cake and was so overwhelmed by their amazing ice cream flavors (and the outstanding samples) so I decided to go with cupcakes and a variety of pints of ice cream. I was a wee bit disappointed with the cupcakes, but the ice cream more than made up for it!!!!
mitchell's or bi-rite creamery ice cream cake?
yes, I saw that post and others but none that specifically mentioned mitchell's or bi-rite's cakes. I think we'll go with bi-rite. I'll be sure to post a report on it.
mitchell's or bi-rite creamery ice cream cake?
I'm in charge of getting a friend's bday cake and can't decide between a Mitchell's cake or one from BiRite Creamery. Never had either....any preferences out there? Any particular cake types/flavors recommended? If I go with Mitchell's should I get the ice cream "pie" or "cake"? Any other places I should consider?
Thanks!
Sea Ranch: Two Fish bakery and so long Pangaea
We were in the area two weeks ago and also had a great dinner at Pangaea. They mentioned that after closing for good they might open a few times a year for "special dinners".
One alternative to TwoFish is a place called Trink's in Gualala. We had a late start for breakfast and headed there thinking we'd miss all the goodies at TwoFish. Around 9:30am Trink's had amazing scones and muffins fresh out of the oven.
Buying a gift certificate for SF restaurant from Boston, help???
I recently was given a $100 gift cert to Firefly in Noe Valley. It was the perfect amount for a great night out....apps, entrees, dessert and glass of wine each, plus tip. It's a cozy atmosphere with a wonderful menu...always a vegetarian option and at least one fish.
Other ideas for something new are Nopa and Presidio Social Club.
A Gourmet Basket/Meal for a New Mom?
When we recently had a baby we received a great gift, a gift certificate for a bunch of meals by personal chef Jane Peal. They're vegetarian, very delicious, big servings, available Mon, Wed & Fri -- and she delivers them to your door.

3 days with Baby on Union Street
Dragonwell is our go-to spot in the Marina when dining with our 2-yr-old. It's on Chestnut and has healthy-style Chinese -- not authentic but consistently good and very child-friendly. Rose's Cafe is right near where you're staying and has a pretty good brunch menu.
25th & Clement
for indian, my vote is for great india on geary and 25th, ernesto's on clement and 24th (?) is not bad for basic pizza and joe's on geary and 18th definitely has the best ice cream in the 'hood......
has anyone tried the new mediterranean place (layala?) on clement around 24th? or the peruvian place (karamanduka or something like that...) on clement near 19th?
Union Sq/Sunset District/Healdsburg spots of Chowhounding
definitely stop by arizmendi bakery on 9th (btw Irving and Judah) for lunch or bfast. great muffins, scones, breads and thin crust pizza (past 11am, I think). good coffee too.
Great lunch spot near Melrose or Montana?
I'll be visiting LA next week for work and am looking for some suggestions on where to have a great lunch and true LA experience. Something close to Montana Ave in Santa Monica or Melrose (btw Fairfax and La Cienega) would be ideal since I will be in those areas for appts. Also, any great area coffee places for b'fast in the a.m. or an afternoon pick-me-up? Many thanks!
Recs for near Seal Harbor, MDI
I'll be spending two weeks in Seal Harbor and am looking for some recommendations for nearby eateries. Any great breakfast spots? Bakeries? Ice Cream? Nice restaurants for dinners out? Anything worth making the trek into Bar Harbor for?
Thanks so much!
