Korean in Cobble Hill

It's totally edible and enjoyable= )

Korean in Cobble Hill

Hello hounds,

I know why I never noticed Henry's Express before. It's a hole in the wall deli next to Henry Public on Henry between Atlantic and Pacific. However, something written on their menu board caught my attention:

Bim Bim Bap
Ramen with Vegetable
Bugolgi

Yes! I'm happily munching on Bim Bim Bap as we speak. Great to have Korean option, albeit a limited one, in the neighborhood.

Check it out. I'm pretty sure they are only open for breakfast and lunch and there limited if any tables.

-Alex

Best Thai On Smith St?

I think Em's new-ish Thai-Spicy mini-menu is pretty awesome. The ground pork with a handful of garlic cloves and fried egg is my usual favorite. But now I've been leaning towards the sliced pork dish that is made with this aromatic shaved root. Absolutely delicious, very authentic in taste and damn hot. Like it was a victory to finish it hot.

Good times.

David's Brisket House: Renovation or Out of Business?

Much respect to you guys. No frills, just delicious food at a great price.

Cafe luluc -- fresh Smith Street horrors

are you kidding?

Thai: Em has some delicious food, and is one of the few Thai restaurants that can transport me back to Thailand.
Italian: Frankies and Lunetta are both delicious Italian.
Mexican: Calexico has the BEST burrito in NYC hands down.

Ok, CH/CG doesn't come with a breadth of styles, but it has a number of very good restaurants, especially many that have been at the forefront of the "brooklyn" school of food. But I think your expectations are too high. No neighborhood fits your criteria.

What about looking at it in context. Name another neighborhood with better restaurants, transportation (i.e. 3 stops to chinatown) and grocery stores?

Oaxaca - just opened on 4th Ave and President

Maybe so. The point with Oaxaca though is that they are a place that really has no passion for Mexican food. Taste Calexico vs Oaxaca and it becomes painfully clear. If you crave Mexican food and you want some close approximation, that's fine. It's ok Mexican food. But you can go to plenty of places not too far away and at least find something that's somewhat inspired.

any high quality sushi in brooklyn/queens??

Taro and Ki in Brooklyn both have very high-quality sushi. Delicious.

Citi Field Suggestions Please....

I enjoy the ribs at the Blue Smoke quite a bit and the line is always much quicker than shake shack

Best BBQ in Richmond, VA

I spent last weekend in Richmond visiting form NYC and I was on the lookout for awesome barbecue. Here's what I ate:

On Friday we had an awesome lunch at Comfort. I had a special sliced beef sandwich that was unreal! The slices were so thin and rare it was like carpaccio. Just delicious with excellent sides. I really dug the vibe and found the service from both owner and staff friendly and engaging. These people are doing great things with comfort food, period. Glad to finally join the fan club.

On Saturday we decided on Benny's. While the atmosphere simple and service friendly, the food was totally forgettable. The pork and beef were both very dry and the ribs were missing that smoke/ juicy fat rush that makes you say wow. I had high hopes but ultimately it proved a real disappointment. Hopefully next time I'm proved wrong.

On Sunday we weren't really looking for more 'Cue, but a friend from the area suggested Virginia Barbecue Company in Ashland. We had no idea it was a chain- or that this was the original location. Set in a simple tiny, 100+ year-old house, it feels worn but warm. There's only 4 tables in the place and one of them was occupied by nice older woman chomping on a pulled-pork sandwich. I got the sampler of brisket, carolina and virginia pork. Wow. The brisket, while not very smoky, was tender and juicy. The carolina pork was the most spot-on I've had outside on NC, and the Virginia pork was a revelation- salty and rich with surprisingly subtle tomato and spice.

Now this is a chain so I don't know how legit it is... or whether they even cook it on location. However, I do know that it was delicious and I'd stop there again in a heartbeat if I happened to be tooling around north of Richmond.

News Flash: 99.9% of restaurant names have little to do with the food.

Diner / Marlow & Sons review (w/ pics) - wow, excellent american food in brooklyn and probably one of the best meals ive had in NYC

Ms Williamsburg was destroyed in a fire. What a great spot in what used to be the middle of nowhere! Relish is a name I haven't heard in a while. Are they still in any good? Unlike Diner, I never heard anything about that place once I left the neighborhood.

Indian on 6th St. that doesn't suck?

Ate at Brick Lane last night for the first time in a couple years. Delicious. Definitely one of the better Indian places around, and for my money, the best in and around 6th street for sure. It's such a revelation to eat a delicious Indian meal with so much mediocrity in the city...

Best mole in the city

I'm no mole expert, but I know I've had lots of bad or mediocre mole over the years. Last winter I tried it at Superior in Williamsburg and was stunned...it was delicious. Rich yet restrained, complex yet grounded in traditional flavors. It took me forever to eat because the flavors were so interesting. Now, the one thing I've found over there is that their cooking can be a little inconstant...but I'd give it a shot. They took it off the menu for summer, but with the cold weather returning, I'm sure it'll be back soon.

Best Burrito in NY?

The answer is Calexico. I've been searching over 5 years for a killer burrito in NYC and I finally found one. At $10, it's about 2x as expensive as a burrito in SF, but the ingredients are really fresh and the flavors are amazing and well-integrated. The Pollo Asado is cooked on a grill and appears to be mostly thight meat. Crispy and juicy at the same time. The steak is also juicy and delicious- not your usual thin meat reheated on a griddle. They use an avocado/lime sauce that really pulls the whole thing together, but I've ordered guac and sour cream as well to get the ultimate flavor explosion.

They get my vote, hands down.

Bueno opening in old Gravy/Trout space

So I finally ate at Bueno, and I'd go back again. The French Onion Soup is seriously killer. Easily the best in the neighborhood. There's delicious stock going on, with sweet onions and tons of gruyere melted on top. Can't wait to hit it up when the weather gets a little colder.

Other things tried at our table were solid but nothing to write home about. Burger and fries were above Apt and below Tabac. For dessert we had a kick-ass souflee.

Service was attentive, but slightly awkward. The music was a little cheesy. They need to make sure their glasses are checked for cleanliness before going on the table, and while they're at it, get rid of the silly looking place-settings.

Though I don't think Bueno is offering anything new or vital for the neighborhood, I think it's a solid addition. I look forward to working my way through more of the menu.

Brazilian food tour in Queens

You should be hitting up the Brasilian Day Festival in Midtown today.

Trini Doubles @ Ali's

Tried my first doubles at Ali's on Fulton between Bedford & Nostrand. If you haven't heard of a doubles, it's a small sandwich of fry bread filled with channa. I had mine with pepper sauce.

I expected the channa to have a little more flavor, but overall, it was a delicious snack- and a real bargain at $1.25. Can't wait to try the Roti= )

David's Brisket House: Renovation or Out of Business?

I had the brisket a couple days ago. Got them to slather on a little juice from the slab of meat cooking in the oven. Delicious and HUGE for $8. I would have done well to stick to the small...

Lucali is a Tourist Trap.

I'd take the pastrami at David's any day... half the price and every bit as delicious.

Fette Sau...

Everything on the menu is pretty good. Last time I was there the brisket was a tad dry and the big winner was the Angus boneless ribs. The pulled pork is always awesome. As for the sides, the beans are delicious and I do like the German potato salad- if anything just for a little change in texture, though it's always the last thing left on the tray.

Al di La lunch after the Dumbo flea market

You can take the F train from Dumbo to Park Slope. It'll be a short-ish walk from the 4th ave stop, but you can stroll down 5th and get a little flavor of the neighborhood.

Moroccan Cuisine

I just ate at Mogador a couple days ago and it was the best lamb I've had in a long time. Delicious. And the rice there is like crack. I hadn't been in a few years, but I'll be back sooner this time.

Bueno opening in old Gravy/Trout space

A Panda Express would probably be better than most of the chinese on Smith st. by a long shot; )

I just can't get my head around a place called "Bueno" not being a burrito shop.

Bueno opening in old Gravy/Trout space

From reading the sign, the way I understand it is that the entire compound is going to be some sort of food mall. It looks like "Bueno" is opening in the former indoor trout area and will use the indoor kitchen behind trout. Both Trout and Since 1963 have their own little contained cooking/ heating areas.

I don't have high hopes, but I've been wrong before...

Nice/New Green Bo

I've eaten there twice in the past couple weeks. Soup dumplings were pretty spot on both times, and I preferred the pork to the pork and crab. Oh, I love the hot & sour.

I tried a smattering of other dishes, but nothing was truly memorable. The wine chicken was somewhat interesting, but ultimately just tasted of cheap wine. A lot of other stuff comes out too saucy for my taste.

It's really all about the dumplings.

What's interesting is that you don't compare it to Hill at all...
