Super Taster Columns- why only videos now?
...and this is why i enjoy seriouseats.com so much more.
what were (are) your favorite bed time snacks?
When my brothers and I were little we always had a bowl of cereal before bedtime. It never had occurred to me until I was much older that this wasn't something everybody did. Eating cereal just seemed like what you did when you got out of bed and before you went back in it.
Then we always took a tupperware cup of water up to bed with us. And I never drank mine because in the mornings whatever was left we got to feed to the various household plants...which was exciting.
Favorite Paper Towel?
The kind that isn't made out of trees and can last for years by simply running it through the washing machine!
Super Taster Columns- why only videos now?
I agree completely. I come on the computer to read things, not to waste time waiting for a poor quality video to load.
Faux Meat - Recommendations
I believe that Quorn products do the best job of mimicking textures and providing a great tasting product. It is also healthier and safer than using soy protein choices.
Their meatballs are my favourite, never tried their imitation chicken products, but my Aunt and Uncle in Scotland are long time vegetarians and really enjoy using Quorn when they want "meat" in their meals.
Usually I just tend to stick to real food and try to creatively use vegetables in preparations akin to meat. But at least their are some good meat replacements out their nowadays.
downfall of chow
My point was to draw attention to what I have perceived as a decline in quality content over the past few years (esp. months) on Chow. As a result I have sought out other sites that aren't disappointing me.
In re. your comment about the BBQ...I think you didn't understand...there is nothing against who is barbecuing or what there sexual preference is. My disgust was for the way that Chow promoted and proposed an offensive article/contest. I am sure whoever came up with the idea is kicking themselves and upset that it wasn't perceived how they meant it to be...nonetheless it slipped into publication when it shouldn't have.
downfall of chow
It was a Chow article. They ended up removing it within a few days after the backlash of disgusted replies. I'm still surprised they never offered an apology about it.
downfall of chow
Is it just me or has anyone else noticed a SERIOUS decline in content on chow.com in the past few months? I don't know if there has been a big staff change recently or what, but I think I am done with chow. From the extremely distasteful call for "lesbian BBQers" to the ill informed articles about beer, I end up leaving the site shaking my head most times I visit now.
Anyone else getting disappointed?
creme brulee recipes, please?
1 qt. heavy cream
5 egg yolks
1 whole egg
1 cup sugar
scald cream and 1/2 cup of sugar
beat eggs and remaining 1/2 cup sugar just to combine
temper in hot cream
baked in water bath at 280 F for approximately 40 mins or until set
I usually use vanilla bean, but if I were just baking them at home I would just use a good extract (for cost purposes). add your vanilla extract to the tempered mix before baking. About 2tsp extract is the equivalent one bean.
Strangest Starbucks Drink?
sounds pretty yummy and really not that hard to comprehend if you ask me! definitely wouldn't classify that as strange...
Favorite children's books that are food themed?
"Ice Cream Soup" !!! one of my faves amongst many...and I have to agree about amelia bedelia. I used to read and laugh at those books for hours. Of course my favourite out of the series was the one where she baked a cake and had to put "dates" in it.

?
Jungle Jim's international grocery store--worth a visit? And what else should I eat in Cincy?
you most definitely have to check out Jungle Jim's! it is basically my second home, I am lucky enough that I only live about 5 minutes away. I am there at least twice a week. I would recommend that you avoid going on the weekend though if you can, it turns into an obnoxious zoo of people. if you do have to go on the weekend though, hit it up early in the morning or closer to close and you will be ok.
p.s. it isn't really a kitschy amusement park, don't let that comment discourage you from going!

ISO Lemon Lava Cake Recipe
don't know if you are still on your quest...but i think this might hit the spot.
http://gourmetfood.about.com/od/dessertrecipes/r/lemoncake.htm
* 2 oz. butter, unsalted
* 4 oz. white chocolate chips
* 1/4 cup. fresh squeezed lemon juice
* 1/2 vanilla bean, split and seeds reserved, or 1 tablespoons vanilla extract
* 1 ½ oz. sugar
* 2 eggs + 1 egg yolks
* 1 ½ oz. flour, all-purpose
* Simmered Blueberry Syrup (recipe below)
* Powdered sugar for dusting
* * * * * Simmered Blueberry Syrup * * * *
* ½ pound fresh blueberries
* ½ cup sugar
* ½ cup water
Preparation:
1. In a microwave on high and in a large plastic container, melt the butter for 1 minute; do this in 20-second stages, as you want the butter to melt evenly and not to separate.
2. Add the white chocolate chips and microwave for another 40 seconds, remove and stir until chocolate and butter are completely melted (this mixture should be thick, yet smooth in consistency – it may need more or less cooking time depending on your microwave). Let this chocolate and butter mixture rest and set-up for at least 3-4 minutes. If it separates or looks broken, discard and start again.
3. In a stand mixer whip eggs, egg yolks, vanilla seeds and sugar on high speed for 8 minutes. Add the lemon juice. Add the chocolate mixture and add the flour, be sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl. Whip on high until the mixture reaches a thick, mousse-like consistency – about 4-6 minutes more – this is now your cake mixture and it can rest like this for up to two days.
4. Butter or grease 12, 4oz. brioche molds (if your not planning to invert the cake you can use 6 oz ramekins, or coffee cups if you don't have molds) pour cake mixture into the brioche molds. Place on a baking tray and bake in a 400 oven for about 7-8 minutes until the cakes are golden and puffy (the cakes will be runny in the center).
5. Remove immediately from the oven, flip over on a plate, sauce with simmered summer blueberries and sprinkle with a little bit of powdered sugar. Serve warm.
Simmered Summer Blueberries
1. In a large saucepan over moderate heat combine the blueberries, sugar and water.
2. Reduce this mixture by half or until syrupy and honey-like.
3. Reserve and keep warm.

Cincinnati Bakeries
greenup cafe and some other restaurants in that group sometimes have macarons. and if you still struffle to find them, just make them yourself! they really aren't that hard at all, as long as you aren't baking challenged i suppose.
if you're ever up in columbus, you must go to Pistacia Vera. it is one of the best patisseries in Ohio in my opinion. macarons are one of the amazing things they are famed for. http://www.pistaciavera.com/
