Where to eat in Montauk/Amgansett? Please help.

Thought I'd chime in with comments on two of the new places:

First is Navy Beach - where Sunset Saloon used to be. Went for lunch last weekend. Food was good on balance, particularly the whole grilled fluke. An order of cornbread came out unevenly heated - also they decided to bring it after appetizers but well before entrees which was a weird time to serve a side dish. Service was above average for Montauk. The setting overlooking the bay is gorgeous.

Clemente's Crab House - stay away. Located where Havana Beach Club used to be (I miss their paella). Can't comment on the food because we left before it arrived. We went around 8:30 on a Saturday night. It looked crowded but this was deceptive as the place was ridiculously overstaffed with completely inexperienced servers. At the half hour mark we finally got bread, but when an hour passed and our appetizers still hadn't arrived (two soups and an order of calamari - shouldn't take long) we decided to leave. It was nice of them not to charge us for the one beer, but they should have told us ahead of time how backed up the kitchen was. The menu looked quite good, so it's a shame that the place is so poorly managed. I will never return there after this experience.

Also ate at Inlet, Westlake, Hideaway and Bird on the Roof. All were pretty much as good as usual. The service at Inlet was a bit lacking and their clam chowder is awful.

There are a couple of other new places (Greek and BBQ) that I hope to try in the coming weeks.

One last thing: Dogs are no longer allowed at Clam Bar. I doubt this impacts many of you but it was disappointing for us to learn.

Garden Catering Opens in Fairfield

The nuggets/fries combo isn't anything special. At the very least I'd order it as a homerun which adds chili and cheese. They then serve it in a platter instead of a bag which I find much easier to eat out of (with a fork).

I've had two of the sandwiches a few times and they're both really good (but inconsistent depending on who makes them):
1) the Hotsy - bacon, egg, cheese, chili and cones. Get it with hot sauce or ketchup.
2) the CCB - Chicken cutlet, cheddar and bacon. By default it comes with mayo too. I usually get hot sauce instead and then add chili to it as well.

I've also tried a couple of their wraps which are really good. My favorite is the nugget wrap.

Semi-comprehensive Montauk dining guide (long)

I prefer Harvest, but I've only been once and it was at the very end of last season. I've been to ENE twice now and didn't really care for it either time. Everything that we ordered at ENE was average. We were there on the first night that they opened this season and it showed - one entree came out a good 7-8 minutes after the other two.

I liked Manucci's quite a bit. I thought that the portions were really generous. The four entrees that we ordered were: 3 pasta dishes - two with seafood and one with meat, and one fish entree (I think tilefish). Everything was really good.

Went there yesterday. Now there is no table service both inside and outside. You have to get up and order at the bar, and they won't bring the food/drinks all the way to your table. The former waitress (now bus-girl under the new restriction) said they were working on being allowed to provide table service again. Food was good as ever and it was fairly crowded too.

Side note: ENE two nights ago was just okay. Manucci's last night was good.

Just want to reiterate what was said about the Hideaway. After Fishing used to be our under the radar spot until it closed down a couple of years ago.

At the end of last season the Hideaway closed down due to restaurant permit/license issues. We were pleasantly surprised when they opened back up this year. I've been twice so far this season and will hopefully go again tomorrow. I wasn't there but apparently last weekend they were only serving food outside again because of a license/permit issue.

Also if anybody has questions about anything out here feel free to ask since I've been to most places.

Need Special Occasion Recommendation for Tonight

Thanks for all the suggestions. I actually didn't have a chance to check back here before I left. We ended up going to Akdeniz which is a Turkish/Mediterranean place in midtown. It was solid and a good value. Two things that were particularly good were the salad and teh baklava (still not as good as my grandma's though).

I definitely want to try Socarrat. I'll be going to school in the city starting this fall so I should get a chance.

Need Special Occasion Recommendation for Tonight

Its my dad's birthday. There will be four of us all together. He will be coming from Times Square, my sister will be coming from Union Square, my mom will be coming from 90th and Madison, and I'll be coming from Grand Central. No matter where it is, somebody will be taking the subway, so we don't really have a preferred neighborhood.

Sister is pretty much a vegetarian. She might pick at some fish or chicken, but she'd be better off with a vegetarian dish. Dad likes seafood (particularly mussels marinara and paella). He also likes Indian food. Mom prefers veggies and fish to meats, but is flexible and I eat pretty much anything. I don't think we're really limited by anybody except for my sister.

Price wise, probably not the most expensive like EMP or Le Cirque, but maybe something a notch below. For our last special occasion meal we went to Keens Steakhouse, which I think is slightly less expensive than some of the more well known steakhouses.

We're shooting for around 7:15-7:30ish. Looking for something where we will have no wait.

Thanks

Juarez - authentic Mexican in Mamaroneck

There is a relatively new Mexican place on Mamaroneck Ave. I noticed it about two weeks ago and tried it today for lunch. I really am not qualified to say how authentic it truly is, however it seemed like the real deal to me. I went with a friend who had been there before and apparently they didn't have anybody who spoke English when he first went.

As you enter, on the right is a counter with maybe 8 seats and then on the left are maybe 6 tables that each seat four. There was a lady with a little kid in the back corner; she seemed to know the one waitress.

The guac was good. For my main dish I had a carne burrito, which I liked quite a bit. It came with rice and beans on the side. Again, I really can't comment on how authentic it truly is. They had a ton of stuff on the menu that I had no idea what it was. Two things that caught my attention were something with tongue and a chicken dish with a Mexican chocolate sauce.

Some of you are probably familiar with Juarez Grocery on Mamaroneck Ave. I've seen posts here talking about the tamales that they have on Sunday mornings. I have no idea if the restaurant is related to the grocery store.

As for price - the burrito was $7 and the guacamole was $2 and it was filling enough that it was the only thing I've eaten today aside from a peach and a banana.

Clam Shacks, Montauk, LI

To be honest, for the sake of simplicity, I wrote that I had eaten there two weekends ago, when it was actually my parents who ate there and then reported back to me. I have only eaten at Fishbar once, when it first opened and I don't remember anything except that it wasn't worth returning to.

I tried two more restaurants out there with the past couple of weekends - The Hideway and The Point. I enjoyed both of them, let me know if anybody wants more detail.

I went to the East Hampton farmers' market last Friday and plan to return tomorrow. To my surprise, the produce prices were not outrageous. One thing that was incredible were the blueberries. They were definitely the best that I've had in a while. If anybody is interested, I can try to describe the stand that I got them from.

I would agree that it is more of a steakhouse. Of the four main dishes at our table, two were fish (and one of those was fish and chips). It was good, but a bit fancier than typical Montauk fare. My burger was a tiny bit on the rare side, but I still devoured it. Also had the mussels appetizer. I think that the mussels themselves were of a higher quality than other places out there, but the sauce wasn't wonderful. Its a good restaurant overall, but something that I think would fit better in the Hamptons as opposed to Montauk. They focus less on the fresh seafood than other places out there.

As for After Fishing - I know that the chef (I think his name was Paul) left to live full time in Mexico, but I didn't realize that it was to become a landscaper.

What have you heard about Runaways? I know one of the owners has ties to Blue Parrot in Amagansett which I like.

Long time lurker, first time poster here. It's about time that I registered but what made me do so was the strong anti-Gosman's sentiment in this thread.

I wholeheartedly agree that the main restaurant there is awful, however the smaller, less fancy restaurant called Inlet (not to be confused with the non-Gosman's inlet across the water) is consistently good. I've eaten there two times so far this season and countless times in past seasons. It is not a destination restaurant but we often end up there if there is too long a wait at other restaurants (usually Westlake).

Having said all that, Inlet is not "down and dirty" so I don't think its what you're looking for.

Somebody asked about St. Peters before. It is still open. Gene, the owner, is a really nice guy and it turns out that he and I actually went to the same high school. If you go, ask to try the Marlin dip. I rarely ever get the prepared food there, but it is where I go to get fish to grill.

A little off topic, but there is no other Montauk thread. I tried one of the 2-3 new restaurants, Second House Tavern. Everything was good except for the vegetarian dish. They have less of a focus on fresh fish than other restaurants out there. I got a burger and it was quite good.

Fishbar, formerly After Fishing Bar and Grill (located out by the airport) changed ownership (and maybe names too). I ate there two weekends ago. Its not worth going to. I still long for After Fishing - it was my secret spot that was never crowded, but I guess that is why they closed.

I also tried out Bird on the Roof for the first time this season. I think that it used to be better, but it could have been a fluke as it was probably one of the first busy weekends this year.

One last thing, Surfside, located on Old Montauk Highway before town, is no longer serving their Sunday Brunch Buffet. That used to be a weekly staple for us.
