Pomo Pizzeria - Scottsdale

BTW, the Phoenix Fiat/ Lancia / Alfa car club is going to roll into Pomo this Saturday night around 7:30pm.

Where's the best Cheapinese?

Go Go China was awesome back in the day. No longer. Must be new owners.

Pomo Pizzeria - Scottsdale

These guys all sound like they just arrived from the motherland. Fabulous ingredients and a beautiful crust on the pizza. Had the margharita pie and a salad of arugula, shaved parm, salami and prosciutto. Humble Pie is pretty damn good, but this pizza was a serious notch above. We were there on a slow lunch day last week; I don't know if they can handle the crush of a busy Friday night. Sure hope so.

Best fried chicken in Phx/ Scottsdale

Some recent updates to the OP.
Stacy's manager told me that they no longer prepare fried chicken.
Lo Lo's has opened a store in Scottsdale at the Albertson's center, SE corner of Thomas and Scottsdale Rd.

Far oot, eh? I've got the St. Hubert gravy, the fries and now, the curds!

Yes Yes Cookies

I have searched for years to find any information about Yes Yes cookies. In the '60's, my grandparents lived in RI and Yes Yes cookies were always in the cupboard. What was strange that we lived in CT but the YY cookies weren't available there. The GS samoas are ok, but nothing like YY cookies. Four years ago, I was in a Stop and Shop in Providence and asked the mgr if he remembered them. He said they were bought by Burry's and discontinued.

I don't miss much from those days, but I really miss Yes Yes cookies.

Trader Joes carries them from time to time. They are the yellow type. You need the white ones to make a true Quebec "poutine."

Any thoughts on J&G Steakhouse at the Phoenician?

Based on the good reports, I had dinner at J&G this past weekend. The food we ordered was very nice, the veal chop especially so. But the overall experience was a dud due to the confusing service model that they have. The wait staff is dressed either in white lab/butcher coats, or black suits. And whenever any one of them came by the table, they asked if we would like to order. We ordered two apps, two mains and two sides. One of the apps was not correct and had to be replaced. One of the main dishes was wrong and had to be replaced. In both courses, one of us had food to eat while the other one had to wait. And the place was busy, but not overly so. Puzzling. When the check came, yet another face in a suit showed up (mgmt?) saying they were sorry and had made an adjustment to the bill. Upon review, there was no adjustment. In sum, a good kitchen but a confused and confusing service model.

PHX: Chelsea's Kitchen -- I was wrong.

Chelsea's food quality was never an issue for me. And the outside patio is great. But, I don't go to either of the LGO spot very often for three reasons. 1) The noise level in their restaurants is absolutely deafening. 2) Their food is overpriced. 3) Parking is a nightmare.

PHX- Where to buy '00" flour

As reported by Molto E, Defalco's has "00". I've made pasta with regular flour and "00", and the 00 is easier to work with and makes a pasta that has a superior texture. Its about $5 for a 1kg bag (2.2 lbs).

Best fried chicken in Phx/ Scottsdale

Thanks for the Stacey's BBQ tip. My friend was in their neighborhood yesterday and brought back some fried chicken. It is excellent. And my friend, who is a native of Kansas City and a true BBQ fan, reports that the pulled pork sandwich was outstanding.

Best fried chicken in Phx/ Scottsdale

Astute observation by Silverbear. As you head north and east from the intersection of the 51 and Indian School, you have trouble finding a certain category of food and food places; i.e. no " ...berto's" type burrito joints, fried chicken joints, etc. Gyro Express is the closest I can think of good "joint" type food.

Best fried chicken in Phx/ Scottsdale

Can anyone recommend a restaurant or store that sells outstanding fried chicken? To go? I live in the Shea / Tatum area and the situation seems bleak. The Colonel has an outlet 6 miles away or there is Fry's grocery. Help. Thanks.

New Yorkers in Phx for New Year's

Rancho Pinot Grill in Scottsdale. Very nice food with a unique ambience. The saguaro skeleton and the decor will remind you that you're not in New York. The food at Rancho is far better than Chelsea's (the noisiest restaurant in Phx) or Roaring Fork (the original owner / chef sold the place some time ago). Happy New Year.

Alternates might be restaurants at Royal Palms hotel and Lon's at the Hermosa Inn in PV.

phx - non-budget busting steak?

Two things I failed to mention. Your meat will shrink slightly in size as it ages, which is to be expected. And when you are finished aging and preparing to cut, you will see that some of the outer layer will need to be trimmed off before cutting the steaks. PW

phx - non-budget busting steak?

Recommendation: Dry age your own steaks. It is not hard and it makes a big difference.

Need to have access to a refrig that is not used much and can be set for 40 degrees F. Go to Costco and purchase a whole piece of prime rib or sirloin strip (they have them from 3 lbs. to 10 lbs.). Purchase inexpensive white all cotton tea towels (you'll need a few) from anywhere (like Target) and launder them. Buy a cheap aluminum roasting pan that will hold the piece of meat and fit in the fridge.

On day one, remove the meat from the store's pkg. Blot dry with paper towel. Wrap the meat completely in a clean white tea towel. Place the wrapped meat in the aluminum tray and place in the fridge. Forget about it for 24 hours.

Day two: remove the meat from the fridge. Unwrap tea towel (it will have some pink stains from the meat). Re wrap meat with a clean tea towel. Place meat in tray and put it back in the refridg. Wash the dirty tea towel in your washer machine.

Day three: same as day two.

You can do this for a long time. I've dry aged steaks in my fridge for up to 24 days, but you can go less than that and still taste the difference. 10 days seems to be the minimum. When you're finished aging, cut the meat into steaks as thick as you like and grill them. Wrap and freeze any extras.

Great Thai in Phoenix?

Sala Thai on 32nd Street is very good. Swaddee in Scottsdale is good, also.

Phoenix - What else is near Bianco's?

I had dinner at the Rose & Crown pre concert last night. If you simply want a nice selection of beers by the pint, this is your place. But the food is quite bad. Makes the worst pub grub in the UK look and taste good.

Scottsdale: Fine's Cellar

We had our first meals at Fine's this past Saturday. Michael introduced himself and showed us to the table. The amuse bouche was popcorn with cheese, chives and truffle oil; surely, not like Mom used to make. The starter I chose was a duck bratwurst that had great flavor but the texture was chewy. The short rib entree was excellent. Great selection of wines by the glass and the small 2 oz glass option is a excellent idea.

Staying busy in the summer means the locals have shown a vote of confidence for the place. As someone posted earlier, it reminds me of Atlas Bistro. Definitely would return and recommend.

Figs in Phx?

If you can find them, Phx is the origin of the famous black sphinx dates. They are grown in the Arcadia neighborhood and are pretty hard to get. This link has a contact for a woman named Erica who harvests them. I'm not a date enthusiast, but the black sphinx date is incredible food.

To close of this thread, the dinner suggestion of The Brig worked well. We had a black cod that was nicely prepared. Easy to park and walk to the show. Plant and Krauss did a great show. Overall, really nice evening.

Thanks to all of the chows who weighed in. Even details on how to avoid traffic home... very thoughtful.

You're right about the duo. I wonder what made them think of working together. Its hard to describe the quality of Krauss' voice.
We've stayed in Leucadia many times over the years, and La Especial is always dinner the first night we arrive. One of my kids told me she dreams about the tortilla soup sometimes. And I want to try the japanese place on 101 (YuMeYa).

Sounds like the Brig is a good way to go all around. As for the parking idea, are you suggesting parking at the Brig or on the street? P

Its the Plant / Krauss show on Monday. I'm renting a condo on the bluff in Leucadia and driving down for the show.

South Beach Bar and Grille seems to have a rep for great fish tacos and its close. The show at Humphries is scheduled to start at 7pm. Question is what time would I need to show up @ South Beach Bar to make it to the show in time (best estimates)?

BTW, is South Beach really as good as the hype?

Digestif, Scottsdale

Based on the buzz and reviews, I was really excited to try Digestif. In sum, the dinner was disappointing on nearly all fronts. Waited 25 minutes for our waiter to bring our drink order. The pork soup special was tasteless... I kept waiting for the taste to kick in and it never did. The pasta dish I had sounded better on the menu than the execution. Whoever is running the wait staff needs to tighten up the service; it was pathetic. I might give it another try, but not soon.

No. Is that a restaurant or a neighborhood?

I appreciate the suggestion. From the looks of the menu online, the food sounds adventurous. And its close. Your description of the Sunday/late night vibe reminds me of some of the newer places in Scottsdale. A little goes a long way.
