Really Dumb Food...!
These are both great quick snacks for kids... not so dumb in that respect. :-)
Family foods I thought was normal
Now that I've read the "Do you have a favorite I'm-alone-now-so-nobody-will-know favorite dish?" thread, I see that smoked oysters is not such an unusual food to enjoy! Good to know I'm not as sick and twisted as my DH thinks. :-)

This wasn't something we had all the time, but canned smoked oysters were a must in our Christmas stockings. They were eaten with HP Sauce on them, and preferably on top of Triscuit crackers, with plain cream cheese. I still adore this combination! I'm Canadian - not sure if you get HP Sauce in the States, as it's a British thing. My husband (from the Prairies) is horrified by canned smoked oysters, ha ha.
Really Dumb Food...!
OK, this may not fall under 'dumb' foods exactly, but here's a article on 6 of the scariest processed foods of all time. My kids have never had them, but I was a little shocked to hear that frozen blueberry waffles actually don't contain any blueberries at all!

Our Calgary Stampede always offers some bizarre deep fried concoctions, like deep-fried butter, jellybeans or Pop Tarts. I have not partaken, but admit that I did have my first corn dog (and I'm nearly 40) there last year. Fairly tasty, actually. ;-)
"Kids Say the Darndest Things" about Food, Cooking, etc.: Plse Add Your Funny Experiences!
This just happened at the lunch table today. Keep in mind that my husband's mother recently stayed with my 2-year-old while I was away for a few days and her dad was at work. She likes to spoil her grandkids a bit and is less strict about things like sugar consumption...
Daughter (2-years-old): [looking at the pictures on her placemat and pointing to them] " What's this?"
Me: "A pear."
D: "What's this?"
M: "A tomato."
D: "What's this?"
M: "A cupcake."
D: "Have cupcake!"
M: "I'd like to have a cupcake too, but we don't have any."
D: "Where's Nana?"
Yummy food near Hyatt Hill Country??
Thanks for the recommendations. Have saved both and we'll see what we get time for. Any more suggestions for family meals in the vicinity of the Hyatt Wild Oak Ranch are welcome! We don't go until early April.
Yummy food near Hyatt Hill Country??
Did you particularly enjoy any restaurants on your trip? We will be going to the same hotel for a week in April, with our 4- and 2-year-olds. Also bringing their grandparents, so we might get a date night as well. Would love tips and recommendations.

Nice dining without breaking the bank? YYC (Calgary)
Just wanted to interject... the restaurant is called Le Villa. Never been, might have to try it!

where to buy slider buns in Calgary
I saw "thin" ones at Superstore (near Southland and Macleod) today. Wasn't looking for them, just happened to notice those, but they may have regular ones too.
Dolce Sapori (Calgary)
Thanks so much for the updated review. That is not nearly so positive as the ones from a few months ago, we'll give it a miss.
Dolce Sapori (Calgary)
Has anyone been there recently? I noticed a great review from John Gilchrist in the spring and then this one as well, but would love to hear about a more recent experience. Their website isn't up yet, which seems a bit odd if they've been open since spring... Looking for a fun night out for a grown-up birthday.
Best CRMR restaurant for anniversary dinner?
Thanks everyone, appreciate all the comments (and well wishes). I think we'll go with the Ranche this time. Hopefully when the kids are older we'll have the chance for a weekend away at Emerald Lake Lodge, it does look lovely.
Happy Thanksgiving, Chowhounders!
Best CRMR restaurant for anniversary dinner?
Thanks so much for your posting good opinion of The Ranche. Still interested to see what others say about Cilantro (a lot of the posts mentioning it are pretty old now), but I am leaning toward The Ranche for what the lovely atmosphere and proximity to home.
And thanks for the congratulations. Currently waffling between excited to meet him/her and terrified about having 2! :-)
Best CRMR restaurant for anniversary dinner?
My husband and I were given a gift certificate for the CRMR restaurants - Divino, Cilantro, The Ranche, Velvet and are thinking about using it for our upcoming anniversary dinner - probably also our last dinner out before the arrival of our second child.
He has been to Divino and wants to try something new, Velvet looks very clubby and obviously I'm not drinking at the moment, so I guess I'm wondering which is better... Cilantro or The Ranche? The Ranche is closer to home, but either is reasonable, would love opinions on which would be better for a nice atmosphere and a tasty dinner.
thanks!
Had a great evening at Escoba in Calgary!
Sorry, I didn't notice. It's still on the menu posted on their website, but I did notice that menu is a little different than the one we had on Saturday.
Had a great evening at Escoba in Calgary!
We went out with another couple on Saturday night and ended up at Escoba, because some of the 'hotter' locations were too booked up to give us a parent-friendly reservation time. The restaurant reopened a few months ago at a new (above-ground) location (624 8th Avenue SW) and apparently nobody has found it yet, because it was pretty quiet. But we felt it was excellent!
We all like good food and wine and were all very happy with our choices. The tapas dishes were delicious and the entrees were very nicely prepared and also very generous. My ahi tuna was twice as much tuna as I would have expected and our friend's rack of lamb was an entire rack. Service was excellent and they have a great wine list. it's also a very attractive setting, nicely renovated and decorated.
Our friends go to all the best restaurants in town and said they thought it was every bit as good as those.
4 tapas (generally 6 pieces of everything or in the case of the baked camembert, a whole small round and a small loaf of bread), some extra bread for the yummy sauces, 4 very generous entrees, 2 bottles of wine and a couple of cappucinos ran us $290.
So if you haven't been and are looking for a new experience, we recommend it.
