Best BBQ in Bergen County?

I second Baily's Smokehouse in Blauvelt. The Bergen bbq scene is pretty sad these days.
The construction is progressing over at Bourbon bbq, but it still wasn't as good as Bailey's. GIve it a shot. Good beer and I hear they do southern fried chicken now as well. We need to know if it's any good.

DogfishHead Brewmasters (moved from Beer board)

Yes....but this week my store was out of stock on Dogfish Head 60 IPA.....not happy! I kinda like having our little club....no need to get too much exposure.

Bazzini in Ridgewood, Valentines Day dinner

Ha Ha......Ok, maybe there isn't a curse, but Gordon sure does a lot of cussing!! A lot of of the restaurants from the show are no longer in business and you hit the nail on the head, they usually are all mediocre and despite his best efforts they go back to their failing ways.

Wow...I need to get out in Ridgewood more!
I've noticed it always looked closed, but it didn't catch my eye until the sign was out.

Bazzini in Ridgewood, Valentines Day dinner

Well I guess the Gordon Ramsey curse continues. Drove by Bazzini tonight and saw the "for rent' sign outside. It could have been closed for weeks. You could never tell if there were people inside the place or not. That is three restaurants closed on that block now.

Authentic Mexican in northern NJ (Bergen County)

Jalapeno's in Glen Rock reopened a few months back. I guess the Greek experiment didn't work out. I went there last night, good food and good sangria.

Simple and delicious suggestions between Pienza and Montepulciano...

I spent a week in Tuscany just outside of Montepulciano last October. We had a wonderful week touring the area. My number one choice in Montepulciano is A Game Di Gatto. It's a small place and the owner really takes time to go over the food that his wife cooks. He poured us 5 samples of the local wines and then you pick one. He also gave us a tutotial on the various olive oils. No rushing here, the meal took a while but was very enjoyable. I also went to Aquacheta but felt a litlle rushed there. The Bisteaka is the reason to go there..it was a little to rare for my taste. It's still quiet the experience. Check out their website... the picture of Giulio with his cleaver is priceless.

I also recommend Osteria La Porta in Monticchiello. Try and get one of the outside terrace tables if you are there early. We had lunch out there on a nice afternoon. I didn't eat in Pienza but it is a pretty town with some good choices.

Enjoy the trip....I wish I was going back!!

Bagel stores in Northern New Jersey

I couldn't remember the name of the place on Saddle River Road...hmmm "Hot Bagels", it's kind of catchy. Great bagels and bialys which are even harder to find done right.

New HoHoKus Inn

My friends couldn't get in 2 weekends ago. I went to the tavern last night. 8:30 on a Tuesday night, the place was packed!!
The restaurant was 2/3rd's full. They have done a fantastic job renovating the place.
We just had appeatizers by the bar. the pizza was no big deal...thin crust no flavor. My wife had the croque monsieur (french ham & cheese) with fries....that was really good. The burgers going by looked good. I'll try that next time. I thought it was a little pricey $9 for a pinot grigio, $12 burger. But overall a really nice job and exactly what HHK needs. The restaurant menu was a little fancier than I like, so I will probably just stick to the tavern. The outside patio will be really nice come the summer.

New Jersey's best burgers: Where Are They Now?

Iron Horse Burgers are ok, but the fries are those big honking steak fries right out of the freezer. Where is the best burger with fresh peeled fries? That's what I want.

Oh yes...a nice cold ale or microbrew would complete the perfect meal.

Rekorderlig Pear Cider

A friend I was with had some at Moran's Pub in Chelsea at 10th Ave & 19th Street in NYC the other night. The bartender was pushing it saying it was something new. I had a taste...pretty good lighter than regular cider. I don't remember the brand, but it was the first time I had heard of pear cider.

German In Westchester: Went to them all Yesterday

Gebhardt's and Niederstein's in Ridgewood have been gone for years. This is an old post and reminds me of some good places my parents took me to when I was young. How many of the other places are still alive. Zum Stamtish and Chalet Alpina are still around. Alas, I'm closer to Ridgewood NJ than Queens and we have nothing out here. Don't anybody tell me about Kirkir's Inn in Hawthorne...I went once and never went back...pretty sad. Any good German places in Bergen County????

Seeking NJ wine discount store

Stew Leonard's is more expensive than Bottle King or Total Wine, so don't believe the hype. TW has great wine selection and more top scale wines. BK usually has the cheaper prices overall.

What do people think of La Lanterna?

This is the whole tri-state...do you mean the one in Ridgewood NJ??

If you do...my best friends love the place and go there a lot. I have been there a couple of times. I've liked it but I agree with you nothing special. Never had a bad meal, but nothing that made me say "wow". It is small, friendly and comfortable...so that goes a long way as well. and can't beat the BYOB or in this case BYOW!!!

Beer recs for backyard bbq

That's makes it worse having to settle for the Corona!! Nothing is worse than seeing a fine beer wasted like that. At least if they were empty, you'd have known they were enjoyed. I think that is the jist of this thread.
What should you bring??...most people drink beer for the masses (bud, corona, skunky heineken) and those of us on this column have more adventerous tastes, looking for flavor and trying something new.
Sometimes it works in your favor as well. I was at a party last year with 2 kegs, one brooklyn lager and one coors light, the coors went first fortunately for me!!

Beer recs for backyard bbq

I agree with Jackson, it's nice to bring some new stuff and explore new brands however you can't lose with some Corona or Sol with lime. They are quite refreshing for a hot night and a bbq and everyone seems to drink it. I hate to say it, but I tried Bud Light with lime last week and didn't hate it. I'm usually an IPA drinker but the lighter stuff goes down easy with bbq.

Best (nice) restaurants in northern Bergen county NJ

Barcari Grill is nice but they don't do BYOB....which sometimes keeps me away. I moved from NYC 15 years ago and I have always loved the BYOB rule..it makes it cheaper to go out. I like Marra's in Ridgewood (although it sometimes gets pretty packed in there, probably not so much in the middle of the summer). I also like Pastafino in Allendale as a comfortable place to have dinner. Lot's of good pasta choices. Janice's Bistro in Ho-Ho-Kus is also a good little romantic find. It is pretty unique, it was formally a diner and they have kept the counter in place but don't utilize it for seating, they have a great menu. All of these are BYOB.

Fav IPAs?

The Dogfishhead 60 IPA has become my favorite beer. I used to rave about the Sweetwater IPA and 420 when I visited Atlanta, but the Dog 60 blew it away in a side by side tasting. AlLso liked it better than the Victory HD. So what is the real taste difference between the 60 and 90. I can't see spending the $9 on a four pack if I get addicted to this stuff?

Ridgewood Restaurant to Avoid

Smith Brothers was never a culinary destination in Ridgewood.
A cold beer and a burger were all you could ever depend on. I was hoping that things would improve with the restoratuion. Oh man, they ruined the fries...not looking good.
The burger and pomme frites (they don't do fries) at Winberries Cafe around the block are better.

columbus circle lunch break

Alan's Marketplace is a little deli across from Fordham (9th Ave & 60th St.) that make nice hero's and great salads. I also work in the area and go here once a week for a salad. Burrito Box on 9th and 58th also very good. I agree with Tina...lot's of good places as you head further south on 9th. You can hit just about every cuisine between 42nd and 56th streets.

MEXICAN in Rockland County

I'm also a fan of El Bandito, on 59 in Spring Valley.
The strolling musicians once played "Owner of a Lonely Heart" by Yes on their acoustic guitar.....so much better than hearing the Gypsy Kings or La Bamba for the umteenth time.I also love the extras...The complimentary banana cream burrito and shot of vanilla liquor are a nice finish to the meal.
