Bucks County - Newtown - Olive Oil and Vinegar on tap
Actually, it's the Tubby Olive. It's where The Lion and the Unicorn was, so right next door to Mom's Bake at Home Pizza. Btwn Center and Washington. No idea when. Can't imagine they have much equipment to install. Looks like just a bunch of shelves.
Bucks County - Newtown - Olive Oil and Vinegar on tap
Coming soon to State Street! The Chubby Olive. I hope they last at least a few months. That was all farmland 25 years ago. Maybe they can help create an absurd foodie culture. I approve!
Basement storage: crate open or closed?
yah, the Steinklotz, that's it. Now, why wouldn't I age it? Has it already been aged and that's why it's making an appearance 4 years later?
Basement storage: crate open or closed?
ehhh, pretty sure it's wood, not cardboard. It's Helfrich Alsace Gewurtztraminer Grand Cru 2005. I dunno how long I plan on storing it. Never intentionally stored wine before. Usually just drink it right away.
Basement storage: crate open or closed?
Hi. I just bought a crate of Gewurtztraminer. Am planning to store it in my basement. I'm assuming it's fine in the crate. Does it matter if the lid of the crate is open or shut? Air flow and all that.
Chowish finds in Yardley/Morrisville area?
Well, I guess everyone deserves at least a second date, but Cafe Bombay's food wasn't exciting at all. We went with a friend from Kerala (their cook is from Kerala) and he was not impressed either.
Ghee/clarified butter in an unopened jar - How long does it last in the refrigerator?
On the counter maybe 6 months, in the fridge probably forever. There's practically zero water left in ghee so there's nothing really to spoil.
Desi Village - Langhorne - R.I.P.
Time to move on. I'm willing to give Indian Garden in Yardley another shot. Meanwhile there's a place on Bustleton near Byberry called ummm Best Taste of Asia which has amazing nevratan korma and lamb biryani. Strictly take-out.
DiBruno Bros cheese at Shady Brook Farm - Yardley
Howdy!
DiBrunos now has about a dozen shrink-wrapped cheeses at Shady Brook Farm. I spotted Stilton, Piave, Manchego, 3 yr Cheddar, 3, 6 and 10 yr Aged Gouda, Aged Provolone, Grana Padano and a few others. No Epoisses or anything particulary adventurous but good, solid choices and a far cry from what Shady Brook used to carry - local flavored young cheddars and mild creamy stuff. They also carry some DiBrunos cheese spreads, if you're into that sort of thing.
Burger Battle: Shake Shack vs Resto
Went to Shake Shack last night after much hype. Greasy greasy greasy. In the end, it's a greasy pretty decent drive-thru burger with american cheese, not a delicious seared, med rare bar burger. The crinkle fries were a bit disappointing. Not bad but disappointing, In terms of fast food burgers I think 5 Guys even does a better job than Shake Shack. If your favorite burger is from McDonald's you'll be pleased by Shake Shack.
Oaf needs mandoline for thin-sliced garlic only
Wow! Thanks for all the replies! I posted, got a few good suggestions and then forgot all about the post until now. I'm at my folks' house now, around the corner from Zabars so I'll see what they have today in the way of truffle slicers and garlic-only mandolines. It's true that slicing a few cloves of garlic takes only a few minutes... the thing is the mindset that this is a "set it and forget it" type meal. Like, I'll spend 4 hours at the stove on a vindaloo with every authentic ingredient but when I make pesto I use dried basil and a food processor. So the dal recipe I treat as a fast meal, even though with just a little care it could be tastier and not much slower. The recipe (I don't have it in front of me now) is something like 1 C Masoor dal (the little red lentils that cook real fast), 5C water, maybe 1/2tsp of turmeric which you boil until soft, then you heat some ghee or oil, like 1/4C in a pan and throw in the slivered garlic. Fry for a minute or so to flavor the ghee then dump it into the dal. Simple and delicious. The garlic butter itself is delicious, but it's also nice to bite into a sliver in your dal, so only having a few chunks would reduce that pleasure.
Oaf needs mandoline for thin-sliced garlic only
Hiya! I'm absent-minded and clumsy and like to take dangerous and foolhardy shortcuts. But I have a recipe by Julie Sahni which I love (lentils in garlic butter) which calls for 5 thinly sliced garlic cloves (to be fried in ghee). I figured a mandolin would be perfect, but then I started reading about bloody knuckles and fingers. I could use a mandolin for other purposes, but that would be the primary reason. Any suggestions for cheap, safe and effective?
Chowish finds in Yardley/Morrisville area?
no offense to your neighbor but there's plenty of bad, mediocre as well as great Indian food in NY, so that's kind of a weird recommendation. That being said I'm curious to try Cafe Bombay since they have a few interesting dishes on their menu - rather than the usual "best of" - such as Chicken Xacutti and Crab Goa.
Chowish finds in Yardley/Morrisville area?
Indian Garden has a decent buffet. No heat but some good flavors. Haven't ordered off their menu yet. Desi Village in Langhorne is sometimes excellent. Aside from those we go further afield or even to Philly for ethnic. Not enough competition here for anyone to really shine.
ISO South Indian market

chaat is like the easiest thing on earth to make... course the chaat buffet comes with a dosa. Subzi Mandi has a chaat cart but I don't think they man it every day... it was definitely open on Sunday when I was there last but I don't think it's open during the week... I'm usually there on weekday afternoons around 4 or 5

bleh on buffets
food that's been sitting around slowly getting drier and drier. Delicate flavors and mass quantity don't go hand-in-hand.
Garbanzo/Chickpea flour in Philly or Burbs?
there's one on Bustleton - International Food Market 8570 B Bustleton Ave
and on Roosevelt Ave - Kavita Indian Groceries 9257 Roosevelt Blvd
if you want to buy in bulk go to Subzi Mandi on State Rd and Dunksferry Rd right across from Neshaminy State Park
Levittown - good Mexican - Cinco de Mayo
Howdy!
Was looking for the Indian buffet at the corner of Woodbourne and Oxford Valley Rds that was called Sartaj and then Flavors of India... except now its Cinco de Mayo. A bit grungy (stains on the cardboard menus, old looking tablecloths, glass coverings on tablecloths) and some frenetic latino pop music (corazon this and corazon that). I glanced at the menu and was reassured because they serve tongue! And other horrible facial parts too. Not that I'd ever eat that but to me that means it's probably "authentic" whatever your definition of that is. Free chips and salsa kept us from eating our hands, and after about a half hour I was wishing I had brought War and Peace when finally our food came.... best tortilla I've ever eaten wrapped around some delicious steak with this and that and the other and some rice and beans. A few doors down is a Mexican grocer with lots of trans fatty tortillas and all the chilis you'll use for the next two thousand years, and some weird looking sodas.
Tiffin Store
jeez - "can't miss" for like $10? Sometimes you'll just miss, even if it's your favorite dish. With Indian food usually a good way in is to order punjabi food, such as korma, butter chicken, cream chicken, butter cream nut chicken, or tandoori anything. Tiffin does these pretty well, and sometimes extremely well.
Gourmet food in Lower/Mid Bucks - Aside from Cote?
I'll peek into Jamie Hollander to see what they have, altho that's as far away as Cote.
Gourmet food in Lower/Mid Bucks - Aside from Cote?
Howdy!
Just moved back to Newtown area after a few year absence and am wondering if there are any gourmet food stores aside from Cote and Co in Doylestown and the rip-off place in Peddler's Village. Cheese, olive oils, etc.
Stroopwafel in Philly
We've been much happier with the one Zabars in NY carries than Trader Joes. Cant remember the name tho. It was such a treat to go down the street in Gouda for fresh stroopwafel.

found it, but it's NORTH of Street Rd, not south. At the intersection of Dunksferry Rd and State Rd.
Bucks Indian grocers: Subzi Mandi and Apna Bazar
there's nothing on state rd but lumber yards and truck parks. Must mean somewhere else.
