Cafe Juanita stand-in needed

Hi

I wanted to take my wife to Cafe Juanita for her birthday this month but it's on a Monday which is of course a dark night for many restaurants, including Cafe Juanita.

Does anyone have any good suggestions in the Bellevue/Redmond/Kirkland area for an equal (or better!) super-good-food for a wonderful-foodie restaurant that would be open on Monday?

Thanks so much!

P

Moon Valley restaurants that are chow worthy?

Oh, AnonymousWaitress, you seek the impossible! :) Just kidding, sort of. We've been here in Moon Valley for six years and it's only gotten worse, not better! There are a few places worth noting, but unfortunately mostly on the lower end of the chow spectrum. You drew a pretty big square so that helps. We have vritually nothing in the mid-range and above and certainly nothing on the really good end. That said, here are a few local/unique/worthy places which we like. They can be good but can also be unpredictable. Working closest to furthest out:

Salute Italian, 7th and Thunderbird (we know the bartender now but honestly have never had that great a dining experience there)

Wild Tunas Sushi, 7th and Thunderbird (service can be slow but food's predictably good)

Tara Thai, Bell and 3rd St (used to be Pink Pepper, still pretty good for Thai take-out)

Magnum's, 7th St and Union Hills (a wine/smoke shop that has a catered food deal sometimes - great bar).

There are a few other things, like you said, in Sunnyslope and further out, like:
Los Reyes del Torta, 7th Street (solid Northern Mexican sandwiches)

Bombero's, Central Avenue (decent wines in a fun place especially in nice weather on the patio, but food is up and down)

Just inside your boundaries is Vietnam Kitchen, or something like that, on Cave Creek just south of the 101. It's pretty good.

Bill Hunt is a MV guy and can maybe add a few others I've missed.

Unfortunately, the pickings are just slim. The fact is, if we want to eat well we plan on being in the car for a while.

Best of luck to you in finding something worthy. If you do, be sure to post!

Chef's table or other high end (quality) dining near Wild Horse Pass

I guess I'm a North Valley snob, but I'm struggling to think of anything really good down south near the Sheraton there, other than I'm sure folks will mention Kai. Would like to get the crew out a bit, though.

But I do not want to have to hustle all the way to to Camelback (NOCA, Tarbells, etc) or further. I just can't think of anything super good quality, chef's table or private dining room preferred, in Chandler or close there.

Anybody have any good recommendations?

Basis New American Cusine has closed

Basis, on the NW corner of of 7th St and Thunderbird, been talked about a few times over the years on here. Never a destination restaurant for the Valley, but definitely a mainstay for those of us in Moon Valley and North Phoenix. Sadly it closed on July 2nd. They had tried some creative things - recently been running a 3 course for $15 deal with kids-eat-free. Whopper of a deal for some great food. But wasn't enough to get them into the black.

Here's the "story" behind it.
http://atlastacatering.com/Basis_New_...

It's sad, but too common in this day and age. This part of the Valley, too, just can't support a good, local restaurant that doesn't have strong bar activity. Not a chef's paradise up here.

Albuquerque - thoughts on party places?

Well, after lots of research and thought, it looks like we're going to do Jennifer James 101. I loved her first place and Graze was fun so we're hoping for a great food evening with a dedicated restaurant for the big night.

Now, for you CH folks who've been there . . . any dishes/techniques/etc that I should either insist on or (better yet) avoid?

Thanks!

Reston: need business dinner suggestion

Hi Everyone - thought I'd chime back in with results.

We did PassionFish and it was terrific. Food was great, our table upstairs wasn't the best as it was right by the stairs and staff alley, but it was early. Food was terrific - i had the hamachi crudo and the monkfish ossu buco. Both excellent.

Had lunch at Jacksons, by the by, and had a darn good lobster roll. The grilled corn was good and the coleslaw was awesome. Liked that place a lot.

thanks so much for all the insight and ideas!!

Albuquerque - thoughts on party places?

Hello Hounds!

We are throwing a dinner bash for 30+ people in December and are trying to find great food and a great spot in ABQ. We want a private room, nice environment and service, experience with parties, liquor and wine, and great food.

Here's where we've been looking to start, just based on places known to have banquet or party rooms:

* Yani
* Jennifer James 101 (whole place)
* Prairie Star
* Madeline's Place
* Artichoke Cafe
* Season's / Savoy
* Trombinos
* Marcello's
* Sandia Casino
* Tamaya

I would love the Chowhouse perspective, though, so any comments or thoughts on any of these are welcome and any suggestions on places I've missed too!

Many thanks and great food to you all!

Reston: need business dinner suggestion

Hi
I'm in town in Reston for late afternoon meetings and a business dinner. Have searched but not found anything on the boards that sings to me. Passion Fish is a chain, isn't it? I like the one in Boston, though.

Has anyone tried Vinifera in the Westin? Looks interesting but you never can tell with a hotel location.

Any other good thoughts for a six top with a varied menu, not too noisy but great food and good wine list?

Thanks!

PHX - need a nice bar with good food for a date

Rokeriji is a very interesting idea. We've never been there but it's not too far for us. We used to go to Zest often which was about there, too. That may go to the top of the list!

PHX - need a nice bar with good food for a date

We like Bomberos, too - pretty close for us and fun. We've been four or five times but the last time we were there, though, the food did not impress. And no liquor, if I recall, right? Just wines.

PHX - need a nice bar with good food for a date

Hi
The request has come for our next date night for a nice, intimate bar with comfy seats, good liquor and nice nibbles. First thing that came to mind was Kazmirez, but that's a) a bit far and b) closed now, right?

Any ideas in the North Valley?

Many thanks!

Good suggestions, all. We usually eat at Nani's at one point or another during the week. And Jedidiah's is a good breakfast.

Need opinions for anniversary dinner (PHX)

Hi folks

Getting ready for our anniversary night out and, as always, Binkley's is at the top of the list. We've lost a couple favorites in the last year or two (Michael's, though, so I'm thinking about something different.

Is NOCA romantic/couple-y? It sounds a bit loud and brash. Ditto on a few others around town where food seems good and CH-ish but atmosphere sounds too hip.

Any thoughts?

My thanks,

Patrick

PHX - Pakistan restaurant on Greenway?

Hi
We drove by the other day and the signs are down .... looks like it didn't make it. I'm not terribly surprised. The food was interesting but the whole setup was amateur hour. When we were there first, the guy taking the order had to call the chef on his cell phone to see if he could come over and cook what we ordered. then I went in one time to snag some lunch and the guy said it would take 45 minutes or so as they didn't have anything prepared.

Maybe it was a just a front for some sting operation?

phx: are there any non-chain kitchen stores left?

Unfortunately I just got an email from them that they are closing for good. It was sad. I liked the shop a lot, though it wasn't convenient for me enough to shop there often. I thought their last line was interesting - she begged for people to understand that they never marked up that much so don't expect 75% reductions.

PHX - Pakistan restaurant on Greenway?

We stopped in for lunch a week or two back and really enjoyed it! Tried the Chicken Handi ($4.99), the lamb korma ($6.99) and the garlic naan ($1). It was great, especially the Handi. A little oily, but still very nice. We'll be back!

Porter & Frye (MPLS)

Wow - you guys have me salivating and ready to go! I'm in town tomorrow night and would like to try this place out. Came to CH to do some research but don't need to look any further, I don't think.

I prefer a bar when I'm traveling as I hate to burn a two-top and prefer the atmosphere, usually. So, the big question - do they have a bar at which one solo diner can eat?
Thanks!

PHX - Pakistan restaurant on Greenway?

Hi

There has been a sign up for a new Pakistani restaurant for a LONG time there on the S/W side of Greenway Parkway, about 2600 block East, there where is splits off to Greenway road and the Hotel furniture place is.

Does anyone know if the place is open yet, or will ever open? We thought we saw signs of life a few months ago, like they were starting to set the place up, but haven't poked our heads in for a while now.

Good eatin to y'all!

Arepas in Phoenix or Scottsdale?

We had GREAT pupusas last night during the Sunnyslope Art Walk. Salvadorenos right there at Dunlap and Central was grilling revueltas up fresh outside for $2! They were righteous. Can't wait to go back and try more stuff - they are so sweet there. The Art Walk was great, too.

PHX: steak for the parents

Hey everyone! My folks are coming in this weekend to celebrate my birthday and Dad said he wanted to take us out for a good steak. He suggested Ruth's Chris, but that's not high on my list of "good steaks." If I HAD to do a chain, Capital Grill would be a preference but I know we can do better than that.

They live in ABQ and are Paul's Monterrey Inn regulars from the late 60's, so my first thought was Durants, though I've not been there. So, gimme your thoughts on
a) local joint
b) okay for a 14 month old
c) some variety (wife is off meat, could do seafood).

Thanks folks!

PHX Centro Paninoteca vs Bomberos

Wife and I just lunched at Bombero's and wanted to report back. We went due to the Indepdendents Week (link mentioned elsewhere, I think - http://localfirstaz.com/independents-...) and had a great lunch. Started with a glass of Argentinian sparkling (brut) and an Uruguyan Tannat ... very different. We also shared a peach iced tea due to the heat. Service was nice, food was quick and the chairs mui comfortable.

We split a veggie pannini .. artichoke hearts, green olives, tomatoes and cheese and share a special of the day salad that had nice mixed greens, dried figs, gorgonzola and pecans with fig-balsamic dressing topped with a mound of sliced prosciutto. Both dishes were good - pictures attached - though the salad better than the sandwich. We wanted the brie and fig pannini, but could not do that and the salad, so the veggie was a second choice.

The place, if you haven't been, is very nice and cute. The patio is awesome, though pretty unusable today! We kept saying "this is finally what north central Phoenix as been needing!" and we'll definitely be back soon.

Christopher's-- Late night

Hi all

The wife and daughter treated me to lunch at Christopher's new spot Sunday for Father's Day. We had a very nice lunch.

The duck confit pizza with fig (pic attached) was pretty good and the onion tart was outstanding (ate too quickly no pic available). The truffled frittes were out of this world good (snapped pic quickly as they went fast!).

I had a nice glass of zin (served a little too cold for my taste, though on a hot afternoon it was welcome) and my wife a prosecco to round things out ... oh, and cheerios for my 11 month old. :-)

My only complaint was that the service was a little too formal and dry ... I could expect that for the evenings, but for a Sunday afternoon, lighten up a little and have some fun - you know?

We'll definitely be back there.

HOU - Need Chow b/w TMC and Hobby

Hi folks

Phoenix Chowhound has meetings tomorrow at the Medical Center, then flying out of Hobby that evening.

So I'd like to hear from y'all on Chow-worthy joints between the hospital and the airport. No particular cuisine, style or budget . . . quick is good, but I'll have time to sit down, too. Definitely local, definitely good food and would prefer a cold beer or good glass of wine.

What are your top picks?

Thanks!
