Foiled by Fonda San Miguel again.
fsm isn't that great any more; i don't think you're missing out.
austin's dining scene has really upped its game in the 7 years since i moved here.
uchiko is the best of what you mentioned.
la condesa may be a little too contemporary for your mother, based on your description.
does barley swine still have the communal seating?
may be too uncomfortable for the arthritic older parents.
Is the food at Austin's Strip Clubs any good?
yellow rose keeps advertising free food (prime rib etc.).
meanwhile there was a palazio ad touting their $6 lunches, and 1/2 off all menu items before 1 pm.
Reporting back from food trip in Austin
what a great food excursion! thanks for reporting back.
Hard Hat Vol IX
i never understood why they tried to squeeze a restaurant into that lot.
is there a lot of traffic on the 183 surface road? yes.
can people get in and out of there? h*ll, no.
Kome?
hey pv, thrillist just posted some drool-worthy pics.
here is their menu: http://michiramen.com/menu.pdf
i was eagerly awaiting this place and posted about it in the hard hat report.
since they only make about 50 bowls, i gotta high tail it over there this week.
Tarka
it's pretty good stuff. i've only eaten at the location in the ikea plaza.
the "naan-inis" (paninis made with naan) are a great "gateway" item for people who don't like curry, or don't think they like indian food.
The demise of good Italian in north Austin
when was the last time you went?
i only ever got pizza from them, and haven't for about...2 years?
as a transplanted east coaster, i can't get over the pizza quality to cost ration here.
In The Buns
good to know. i would be visiting to check out that part.
hope it didn't close before i had a chance to shop there!
In The Buns
yes, exactly. i read they took over an additional space next door and added a bunch of stuff.
In The Buns
i made the mistake of ordering one during a staycation lunch when i had errands to do afterwards. those goblets are HUGE.
if it's not too far from your office, definitely hit up the noble pig and stuffed cajun meat market on 620, near lakeline. sooooo good.
In The Buns
if you need some other lunch ideas in the area:
los reyes, next door to in the buns, has serviceable mexican (and ridiculously huge margaritas in goblets).
there is also a moonie's nearby, which doesn't do it for me burger-wise, either.
(183 and anderson mill, in the plaza with reale's, which wich, etc.).
la tapatia is there, with super cheap breakfast tacos and combos, and pretty decent all around mexican food. plus the beloved creamy green salsa, a.k.a. crack.
In The Buns
it had a pretty good start, food-wise.
now there really aren't any good burgers in the area.
the changes the owners made to the decor are even tackier, if you can believe it...
(10+ fake potted palms with lights, strange flowerpot toys, lots of digital picture frames with photos of eagles and the american flag, etc.).
In The Buns
they do, and something called doppelganger (to replace the dublin dr. pepper).
but, when i was there, something was wrong with the syrup to carbonation ratio.
In The Buns
went back today for the first time since the fall.
it's under new ownership.
gone are the stuffed patties, and quality.
it's such a disappointment when locally-owned places deteriorate.
I know it's been discussed before, but... Ramen?
i mentioned them in the hard hat report because i saw them on facebook and was intrigued.
thanks for posting about the food. good to hear it's tasty stuff. i definitely need to try it soon!
El Pollo Regio
tonight i saw they reserved 2 or 3 shelves for it, and put a special sign over it (and it wasn't an end cap).
they are really pushing this stuff hard.
parkside - meh?
i agree with storefront eats about the italian, and also the lack of immigrant foodways developing over the past 100+ years.
i also think austin is really hitting its stride, foodwise.
there is a great mix of cheap eats and casual places, plus some higher end and contemporary places.
austin may never be a top tier fine dining city, and i'm okay with that.
glad you had an excellent meal at barley swine.
me, i would have skipped the amy's ice cream and gone for the foie.
Hard Hat Vol IX
spin is pretty tasty, although i am over the precious "tapas" trend.
went there a few weeks ago, and enjoyed my meal.
loved how they wrapped the pad thai in a thin omelette.
they also did an interesting larb, with salmon sashimi.
there is a living social deal today: $15 for $30.
i totally snatched one up.
Hard Hat Vol IX
according to face book, michi opens tomorrow.
they are a tonkotsu ramen trailer.
the intro menu sounds intriguing!
it's in the newish north austin trailer yard.

Austin Trip report(tried to be short)
sounds like a great trip, whitey.
glad you enjoyed austin.
thanks for posting!
i never had bbq brisket before moving here. mmmmm.
Gloria's Cafe - Cedar Park
thanks for letting us know, cheesy_rice.
which part of lakeline?
i'm over that way pretty often and haven't seen it.
i'll have to look for it this weekend.
Looking for NYC Italian Ices
ewwww. that's a long list of chemicals for a relatively simple item.
Is the food at Austin's Strip Clubs any good?
today i heard an ad on the radio for the grand reopening of some place on tuesday, the 15th.
there's gonna be free prime rib and other stuff at lunch.
it was either the yellow rose or the landing strip, as those are the only two places i've heard ads for on KROX.
Is the food at Austin's Strip Clubs any good?
i could be wrong, but i seem to think someone had a post rating the food quality of the different gentleman's establishments.
i will say, as before, they really plug the food in the radio ads.
one ad was for prime rib!
Is the food at Austin's Strip Clubs any good?
this also baffles me.
all the radio ads here focus on the steak, prime rib, etc.
Looking for NYC Italian Ices
i had the pear, and it was pretty sweet.
the ice texture was nice-- not too grainy.
Opinions on samosas and spring rolls for party
you could also call hot breads on mcneil and 183 for a larger samosa order price.
Killer week in Austin for Newbie
a few questions to perhaps give some suggestions:
1. are your brunch days 2 and 3 on the weekend?
that would give us an idea of when you are here.
some restaurants close one day a week.
2. austin is not known for its pizza.
if you live in, or come from a city with great pizza, home slice will be okay.
you should probably choose something else for lunch on day 5.
3. not sure about happy hour at parkside then dinner at uchi.
both are known for their seafood.
you may want to mix it up with something different.
4. here is a good food truck website:
http://austinfoodcarts.com/
suggestions of places that get lots of board love:
three little pigs
peached tortilla
la tasca
east side king
g'raj mahal
enjoy!
Simple, delicious Japanese food has landed in NW Austin
bummer that you missed it!
the half udon, half rice curry lunch special is delish.
