Bainbridge Island Markets

Town & Country Market has a great wine selection to go along with pretty decent fish & produce. Several wine shops in town as well. Farmers market Saturday not to be missed. Central Market in Poulsbo is T&C's big brother, worth the trip. Several very good bakeries on Bainbridge too.

What's good in Kitsap?

Very nice home style breakfasts at Salmon Canyon Cafe on the south end of Bainbridge Island and they serve them 'till 3pm closing. Its in the complex just north of the old Lynwood Theatre. Lunches are good too. Agree most Thai food around here is barely edible. Had a great lunch recently at PG General Store. I'm heading for Tizley's at next opportunity, sounds deelish . . .

Poulsbo

Would agree with whats already been said. Poulsbo waterfront district has a few second tier type places where reasonably good meals can be had like JJ's Fish House, Whiskey Creek steakhouse, the little hole-in-the-wall Mexican place near MorMor. Just a little further down the street are bakeries, a tavern that does pretty good bar food, a chocolate place that does great hand dipped ice cream bars, etc. Not world class dining mind you but some interesting choices. Oh, the Pho place by Albertsons market is really good and the little Japanese restaurant on the right heading south towards Bainbridge is pleasant enough and tasty. Central Market has great deli, hot prepared takeout, a pizza/hotdog booth and at the other end of the store a nice coffee outlet. Outside they have a BBQ kiosk for some pretty decent sandwiches and smoked meat plates Have fun, its a great little town, insanely touristy in the summer but it holds up well even then.

Westport Grayland

IMO Bennets in Grayland is the one place in the area that stands out as chow worthy. New eateries appear in Westport on occasion but usually don't survive the long winter with no tourists or sport fisherman. It was tough enough out there even with a good economy. Last time I was there, 10/2009, things looked pretty bleak, more places empty & boarded up than usual it seemed. Great spot for hunter/gatherer types though. Salmon, lingcod, halibut, crab, clams, oysters, etc.

Subi, new sushi restaurant, opening on Bainbridge

I agree, hard core sushi addicts will still need to hop on the boat for the city venues. Subi's fish selection needs to expand quite a bit to cure that need.

Shima is a good Japanese restaurant and we eat there on occasion but its sushi experience is not my style I guess. BTW, they are expanding into the store space next to their entryway. Apparently they'll be doing a different menu in there, a little more conventional fare at a friendlier price-point.

Stopped in at Subi for lunch the other day, really enjoyed the house special donburi. Very relaxed atmosphere in there at lunch, still very busy at night. Go early if you want to try it, especially fri or sat nights.

Subi, new sushi restaurant, opening on Bainbridge

We sat at the bar opening night and we were pleasantly surprised at the fish quality and the flavor/texture of the rice in the nigiri . The fish selection is pretty basic so sushi gourmets don't go expecting to find the esoteric stuff. Sushi staff consists of one experienced chef, a semi-novice sidekick who is making rolls for the tables and a runner bringing the cooked ingredients and supplies from the kitchen. IMO they need another experienced chef to keep up with the table orders as getting fed at the bar requires an assertive attitude from the customer. The less stressful option is to give your orders to the hostess and she punches them into the system which then spits the order out at the bar printer where it gets handled pretty efficiently. We prefer more personal interaction with a sushi chef but he's so busy it doesn't really happen.

Once this place gets thru the initial crush every new restaurant on the island experiences when they first open I'm sure things will settle down, the wait staff will get their sea legs and they'll do OK. Have not tried anything from the kitchen yet . . .

BTW, the old BI Sushi joint was OK but to me the chef was a real weirdo, no tears from us when he went out. The other place on the island just down the street, Shima, has pretty good stuff but the bar feels more like you are sitting with your face towards a wall, you can hardly see the staff and for the prices they charge . . . meh

What's good in Kitsap?

As the OP would you consider starting a new Kitsap post? This one is getting really unwieldy to open but would love the conversation to continue . . .

Seattle or Bainbridge Advice

Well you'll be staying right across the street from Doc's in the marina district and they have a huge outdoor dining area overlooking the boats & harbor. That time of year can provide our best weather and their food & service is reasonably good.

Where to eat on Bainbridge Island- Brunch/Lunch?!

If you are walking off the ferry you'll notice the Streamliner Diner draws the biggest tourist crowd. Decent food, not sure its worth waiting in a long line for. Cafe Nola is very good, way upscale compared to the Streamer and is at the other end of the street. Make a left at Cafe Nola and head for the marina district down the hill about a block you'll find Doc's Grill serving breakfast with a great view of the water & boats, again, pretty decent chow. A later opening also in the marina district is Harbour House Pub to the west of Docs a couple hundred yards for lunch menu only with an even better harbor view. If you are driving also consider the Salmon Canyon Cafe on the south end of the island at Lynwood Center. Weekends here are all about breakfast up until closing at 2pm, nice creative specials and very modest prices. Bakeries & coffee abound everywhere as well.

What's good in Kitsap?

Just a quick shout out to those looking for an alternative on Bainbridge to the usual spots in Winslow. There is a bit of a food renaissance happening in the south-end community of Lynwood Center including: Edna's, a nice NW dinner house with fab views of Rich Passage, Salmon Bay Cafe, a super little breakfast/lunch place, Treehouse Cafe, great coffees, salads, sandwiches, wonderful pizza and finally Sawan, pretty darn good Thai. These are all adjacent to the old historic Lynwood theatre featuring artsy, hard to find films. I'm going to stick my neck out and say any of these places will hold their own or best any of the more expensive and crowded places in Winslow. The outside dining at Edna's is not to be missed - views and sunshine (for now at least). Salmon Bay weekend brunch menu ++, Treehouse, a very nice space, Sawan, tasty stuff!

catering on Kitsap Peninsula

Belfair isn't where I would expect to find much in the way of caterers, particularly of the type you would like. On the other hand its so darn easy to put out a spread of seafood . . . depending on where the house is located chances are you've got big oysters right at your feet which can be thrown on a bbq easily enough, fresh dungeness crab from either a seafood outlet or a commercial boat are usually attainable, just need a big pot & propane burner like what you might use to deep fry a turkey. Bunch of fresh corn, a big salad, beer . . . heaven! Cover your outside tables with newspaper, warm up some sourdough bread, melt some butter, etc. and I'll guarantee you'll have a better time than hiring a caterer. Thats why there aren't any!

Oh yeah, don't forget the fresh salmon . . .

Breakfast on Bainbridge Island

Streamliner Diner in downtown Winslow puts out a decent breakfast but gets kind of crammed in the summer with tourists but an early weekday would be no problem. Green eggs & ham! If you want to go off the beaten track a bit I'd vote best breakfast on Bainbridge is a little joint in the Lynwood Center neighborhood called the Salmon Bay Cafe. The owner/cook is a real chef worthy of a top venue but is living his dream at the SBC. Winslow mornings are otherwise a haven for nice bakeries. I think Doc's on the waterfront is dealing breakfasts, likely pretty good stuff.

Chimicum Cafe - great spot just a mile west of Hadlock, had some nice meals at Ajax as well. The drive to Port Townsend is a must as previously mentioned.
