Looking for Something Different....
Addis Red Sea on Tremont Street has good Ethiopian and is fairly different. Also Tangierino in Charlestown has good moroccan food and you can have a shisha afterwards to make it that much more of an experience.
Impossible to find dive bars downtown?
Daisy Buchanan's def fits the bill and is always a good time. Also Beacon Hill Pub and the Sail Loft around Government Center (give or take) are good as well.
Cocktail & Apps tour downtown
If No. 9 is too crowded, Excelsior is right accross the common and has a large bar area downstairs that is generally not too crowded. A good place if you are just looking for drinks and appetizers.
Taking the bar exam...what to eat?
I took it last year and maybe I am just overly paranoid, but I just stuck with foods that I typically ate both during the day and for dinner and just tried not to vary my routine or even get close to anything that could get me sick. Granola bars were good for before the exam, a nice innocent sandwich at lunch, and pasta for dinner...Good Luck.
best nachos
For nachos, Boston Beer Works or Sunset do them really well, although sometimes Sunset can go a little overboard with the amount of cheese. I never thought I would actually complain about that, but it was out of control a few times. Unfortunately no outdoor seating at either, but as the comments above said Cottonwoods is a good choice for all three...
birthday dinner - suggestions ?
I guess when I was 17 the biggest issues were budget and making sure everyone found something they liked...in that sense I would recommend Union Bar and Grille, but also maybe a place like Stephanie's on Newbury or Joe's American Bar and Grill might do it? Also there are good places in the North End as well. I'm just basing it on something slightly better than Fire and Ice and a little classier....if budget and taste are no issue, then thats another story...
Help me check off my must-see/must-do restaurant list!
I would cross off:
1. Finale
2. Giacomo's
3. Fugakyu
The quality at all three are nothing to write home about...you can find better things elsewhere...
Favorite warm weather drinks (alcoholic and otherwise)?
At least in many parts of New England, the significant difference is that a "milkshake" is made by shaking/blending milk and syrup, and usually comes out in whatever flavor the syrup is. A "frappe" however is just a much much thicker milkshake that is always made with ice cream and can be made in any flavor the ice cream comes in. I think the difference is more of a New England thing...this has been my assumption for the last 20 years at least...kind of like the "jimmies" versus "sprinkles" debate
1st trip to Fenway paak
I guess it depends on what you are looking for in terms food and drink as well as the atomosphere you are looking for...Boston Beer Works has decent food (wings, pizza, burgers etc), a number of good beers on tap, many tv's and usually many fans go there before the game. Also, fans under 21 are permitted to go in on gamedays provided they are eating. Eastern Standard is quite good too, but different atmosphere and food. Like the post above says though, getting food at the game and the sausage outside the park is a great experience too...
Favorite warm weather drinks (alcoholic and otherwise)?
-Black Cherry Mojito-Boston Harbor Hotel
-Old Salt Ale with some oysters-Legal Sea Foods (only sold there)
-Dunkin Donuts-Ice Coffee obviously
-Harpoon Summer and Blue Moon in a chilled glass
-Dark & Stormy-homemade, enjoyed anywhere as long as Goslings & Barritts are involved
Superb restaurants beyond the Boston area
Are you thinking of Arrow's in Ogunquit, Maine? I have heard good things but never been... White Barn Inn is surprisingly very comparable to some of the better restaurants in the city, and the best part is that during the winter months they offer "weekend escapes" which include the tasting menu as well as the room in the price...I would say the meal alone, price-wise is almost comparable to L'Espalier etc. too
Eagle's Deli...
Having lived in Cleveland Circle for 3 years without a car, Eagle's was always more of a "last resort" since there were then only a few decent places around aside from it...even before they jumped the shark the food was just average, the prices high, and the only benefit was the quantity (I was a hungry student). Also, what I was usually given was not what I ordered...especially during weekend brunch when its packed...I never really had high expectations for it going in, so I was never that disappointed at my meal...
Looking for sophisticated, sedate place
I would second Sorellina. Its difficult to combine "sleek and sophisticated" with "sedate and laid back" in my mind, but its relatively sophisticated and at the same time has been farily quiet when I've been there. The food is good and there is a great cocktail menu, complete with Dark and Stormy's...
