Where is the El Matador Taco Truck?

that's not them. this is not a taco truck with a twitter or a facebook page, they're pretty basic, and they've been in the same spot for years AND there are recent yelp reviews listing their normal location.

i would suggest that you imagine i've already googled/scoured the internet for an answer on this topic on my own. i'm looking for a person who was there recently.

for clarification, this is el matador - http://www.yelp.com/biz/el-matador-ta...

Where is the El Matador Taco Truck?

Used to live in LA, now live on the east coast. But every time I return, I head to El Matador at about 1am several times for some al pastor.

BUT, the last two times I've been back out to LA have been much busier and, in three trips (one late night and two around 1-3 in the afternoon) I have not been able to find that beautiful truck in its usual resting place at N. Western and Lexington.... has it moved? Is it not there at lunch (which i would never have noticed before because I never tried to go there for lunch until recently)?

Help! I miss it dearly.

Where can I get the best homemade fresh mozzarella or fior di latte nearest to Greenpoint?

Making pizzas tomorrow and would like some great mozz or fior. I would say Graham Ave. Meats might do, but I've never tried their mozz.

THANKS!

Does anybody go to Chinatown anymore?

In some regards yes. The dim sum train left quite some time ago and there is an abundance of mediocre dumpling joints.

BUT in another, much more important regard no. For all the mediocre dumpling places there exist some stellar, otherworldly chinese "snack" joints. Prosperity Dumpling on Eldridge has one of the single best hand foods I've ever had - the sesame pancake with beef. At $1.75! Tasty Dumpling on Mulberry has fantastic dumplings. There are also a bunch of great places to get pork noodle soup. Nha Trang on Centre has a bunch of group filling, soups. And as many people have said, if you know how to pick out the winners, chinatown is the BEST place to go to buy your produce, fish and meats.

So no, it's not passe.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC Recommendations near Casa de Campo, La Romana?

thank you so much for your help, but perhaps i should be a bit more clear. i am specifically looking for hole in the wall, local eateries. i am excited to try several of the options listed below and a few others that i've heard, but i am really trying to find a few places that are off the beaten path (perhaps in bahahibe?). i will forgo worries regarding health, sanitation, safety etc. for the local joints.

Also, mr. Garrido, we are not staying within any hotel, but have a house within the community so I am not sure what pertains to us as far as the hotel's amenities, but thank you for your suggestions.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC Recommendations near Casa de Campo, La Romana?

My family is getting a house for two weeks in Casa de Campo which, as it appears to me at least, is a sort of self-contained private community. There are some benefits to that, but in culinary terms I would like to head out of the resort occasionally to try some of the true local cuisine. Any recommendations are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks!

Tarrytown, NY suggestions?

taking a trip this weekend up to tarrytown and, having never been, looking for any suggestions. Open to anything really, but specifically would like to know if anyone knows of any fall festival'ish things (candy apples, cider, etc.) and then any other stand-out restaurants/bars.

thanks!

Where to buy live lobsters (Brooklyn)?

Where would you recommend getting the best bang for buck on some live lobsters. I'm not against paying more for quality but I don't want to be overcharged. I'd like to stay in Brooklyn but am willing to go into manhattan if need be. Thanks!

Good herbs, tomato, vegetable plants in manhattan? (or bk/queens)

Starting a vegetable/herb garden and need a place to buy all the plants. Too late to work with seeds so any idea where to get high grade veggie and herb plants in Manhattan? I'd also be willing to go into queens or Brooklyn if there are good ones there.

need gluten-free recommendations (particularly east village).

I've just been advised that I have an allergy to gluten and must avoid its intake in any capacity. as such, i was hoping for some recommendations both of restaurants and in-store foods.

further, i live in the east village so any localized recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

any NAPA/SONOMA, etc. suggestions? (particularly off the beaten path)

Ad Hoc was classic, relaxed Californian dining. The fixed menu started with an endive and leaf salad with pickles and radish in a champagne vinaigrette. Perfectly dressed this could have been a perfect meal itself (with some grilled shrimp). The vegetables were at the peak of freshness. The main course was a seasoned Lamb Rack with quinoa cooked with baby asparagus, baby artichokes and black trumpet mushrooms with a mint jus. First off the lamb was perfectly cooked for us (closer to rare than medium rare) and the quinoa, with all the vegetables, was excellent. What struck us most about the dish was the size. It was huge! And our first reaction was that we'd never finish it. Alas, bones sucked dry we both joined the clean plate club. Next was the cheese plate which, of all the items, was not so up to par. It was a tome de recollette with a grilled pepper and pinenut chutney. it's not that it was bad, just that its very italian feel did not mesh well with the rest of the meal. Lastly was the sticky toffee pudding with a creme freche glaze and toasted walnuts. I'm not a dessert person, but it was good. I wouldn't imagine it being much of a show stopper though.

All in all the meal was $49 each and, for that price point, this was a fine fine fine meal. We brought our own wine ($20 corkage), but the wine list had a large range of prices and some very quality wines were included both domestic and international.

Fujiya was pretty good. I mean, I really do try to find the best sushi anywhere that I am and being between NYC and LA I've had some great fish. However, fujiya had some very inventive rolls that ended up being quite tasty (thanks for the sanchez roll rec by the way!), great miso soup and out of the sashimi plate, whereas the tuna wasn't all that great, the yellowtail and salmon were sublime. I'll definetely be back and am Really happy to have found a local place for my mom instead of that awful mambo place downtown. We were wondering though, did the outlet mall people build them that building or how did it end up that their restaurant fits flush in the mall's design?

thank you for all the recs !

heading to fujiya tonight as we are just craving sushi and a lighter meal and i'll admit that the possibility of it being quality while in the outlet mall surely intrigues me. also, i have received conflicting reports - has shiso in sonoma closed?

i've already been to azzuro and zuzu and love them both. i also stopped at the pupusas y mas truck the last time i was here and it was so so good. here's another question - of all the taco trucks in town, which would you recommend? (my favorite meats are cabeza and al pastor)

i'm here for three weeks so i'll definitely visit la mixteca, norman rose and small world and report on my findings.

any other recs not in mexican or japanese arenas?

thanks!

My mother moved to napa a couple years ago and we've hit most of the restaurants in and around napa including, but not limited to, ubuntu, bouchon, angele, go fish, mini mango, bounty hunter...

i am looking for some restaurants that, unlike most of those previously mentioned, are not so dainty.
any good recs for AUTHENTIC mexican?
AUTHENTIC japanese/sushi?

any other ideas for good grubbing?

thanks!

Has anyone been to Ubuntu lately?

for what it's worth i had dinner at ubuntu this past saturday and it was still fantastic. the new chef is clearly seizing his newfound opportunity. the fennel was the single best-cooked piece of any variety of vegetable i have ever had.

it was the fifth or sixth time i've been able to dine at ubuntu and, while all of the others were with jeremy fox as head chef, i would consider this most recent adventure to be one of the best experiences i've had. four thumbs up to aaron london and his forthcoming success.

The Best Air I Ever Huffed

my father is anemic and at my sister's wedding (at a lodge at the peak of keystone in colorado) an oxygen tank that he procured in town was a huge help to him. i know of friends using similar products while skiing in chile as their mountains often peak at bout 14,000 feet.

@falconress - this and that are on two separate pages. compressed air contains chemicals which induce euphoric states whereas this would just be an extra does of extra pure air for those low in oxygen-rich blood.

Any colorado mountain (eagle, gypsum, edwards, vail, avon) suggestions?

I just moved up to outside eagle for ski season and need some food suggestions. i've basically been living off of the mexican place in eagle - la primavera - which, while absolutely amazing (the beef cheek tacos are outstanding and the tortas are the best i've ever had), i'm getting a bit tired of.

can i get some recs -

bbq, seafood, sushi/japanese..

i've tried some places - grand ave grill is mediocre, foxnut is both good and bad, the other mexican place in eagle is piss..

does anyone know anything about paradigm (eagle), vin48 (avon), gashouse (edwards)?

i think i'm trying sato tonight. i'm dying for good sushi. fingers crossed.

thanks for your help hounds!

Special Occasion Dinner (tonight) for Los Feliz/Silverlake/Downtown?

I'm taking my girlfriend out for a birthday dinner tonight and we just moved to los feliz. i would like to take her to a great, new place in our new area. cost is not a factor and i'd like something of the classier variety. the location could be in los feliz/silverlake or downtown (where we'll be getting a cocktail - the varnish, amazing - at some point). the only constraints, aside from area, are her culinary interests which exclude asian cuisines or a seafood focus. thanks for your help hounds.

ps - we've already been to barbrix and while we did enjoy it, i'd like to go somewhere new.

first san fran trip in a long time - need help all around.

I used to spend about a few weeks each year in san fran when i was young, but have since not returned. i am going to be in san fran, with girlfriend, for a few days in early january and am needing some recommendations.

i need advice in these areas (one of which i know is not dealing with chow - please allow me):

noteworthy chinatown haunts - i'm not looking for restaurants as much as quick stop, great eats. also, any banh mi?

dinner places - generally american (new and traditional) restaurants. wine and tapas. my mom recommended zumi (sp?). other restriction, do not want to travel too far.

hotel - please allow this... can someone give me an honest review of the clift hotel? i like schraeger hotels normally, but need some advice. any other suggestions - i've looked at the ritz, among others...

and any other advice, pertaining to anything.

thanks hounds!
