Final plans

Sheesh, did you win the lottery or something? You are going to drop some serious coin on food! My sole piece of advice for Monday is to bring a book with you to both Hopdoddy and Barley Swine, as the waits can be pretty long. Also, I would swap out Contigo for Foreign & Domestic, but I am sure that puts me in the minority among Austin's fooderati.

Today's Austin Food-Related Groupon

I think "total ahole" sums it up nicely. He'll never see a penny of my money.

Ugh, an Eddie Bernal joint. Boo. Although my husband (traitor!) has been and says that the pork torta is delicious.

Impromptu family celebration, post car wreck

Holy crap, that sounds amazing! We may have to do that after the holidays!

We ended up at Mandola's, where I got my favorite Parma pizza (the one with arugula and prosciutto) and my husband got the meatball sub. Kids got gelato, we're all well-fed and happy to be alive!

Send me on my birthday dinner

Congrats on your imminent parenthood! Glad to hear Parkside delivers, even away from the raw bar. We never get out to nice places like P'side now that we have kids! ;)

Impromptu family celebration, post car wreck

My family (husband, 5 year old son, 2 year old daughter) and I were in a serious car accident this morning in which my car was totalled and my husband suffered a fractured rib. We had a sitter lined up for tonight so that we could go celebrate my husband's birthday at Uchiko. Instead, we're going to have a YAY WE'RE ALIVE party. Where should we go? Mommy NEEDS a cocktail of some sort; that's my only requirement. Any suggestions?

gypsy picnic: trailer food festival on 11/06

They are usually at the downtown farmers' market on Saturday mornings. I haven't yet tried them because I am allergic to paying $4-5 for a kolache.

Mocha Cake

My husband bought me a chocolate mocha cake from Upper Crust for my birthday last week. Pretty tasty. I think the mocha is in the cake and the buttercream, but I could be wrong.

Mueller's in Taylor...now just "Meh"

I hate to be That Guy, but it's Aaron (Franklin), not Erin.

Texas Monthly BBQ reviews

Franklin's wasn't there because the practitioners on display had to have been on TX Monthly's Top 50 bbq list at some time in the past. Franklin's hasn't been in business long enough to have made the list yet, because it only comes out every other year or so.

I was underwhelmed by Lambert's. Really liked Wild Blue, and there was a country rib over by the Snow's stand (of course I can't remember who it was) that was incredibly tasty.

I failed to pace myself (had gone for a long run in the morning and eaten very little in order to conserve calories) and ended up stuffed after about 5-6 stands. Amateur move.

best bakery for a birthday cake?

Seconded. I pretty much go to them exclusively for my birthday cake needs. Here's what they did for my son's 5th birthday (cake and cupcakes):

Macaroons like the attached photo

I liked the salted caramel a lot, but the winner for me is the vanilla cardamom.

Tony Bourdain is coming to Austin: Where should his handlers send him?

Oh, that "this is great drunk food" girl really klassed it up, didn't she? My husband and I keep joking about her calling up her mother, "Hey mom! I'm on TV, check me out!"

How about mmmmpanadas? http://mmmpanadas.publishpath.com/

Send me on my birthday dinner

Are you pregnant? If so, you *might* want to skip the oyster bar. I don't mean to be all nanny-state on you, because obviously you are an adult and are capable of making your own decisions, but I know that's one of the (annoying) dietary "rules" I actually observed while pregnant.

But hot damn if TIA didn't make me want to have my birthday dinner at Parkside! Maybe I'll push it for Mother's Day, since my bday isn't until September!

Today's Austin Food-Related Groupon

I've noticed that many of the deals from these sites have been Cedar Park-heavy of late. What's with that? I would love to try Nothing Bundt Cakes, but I'm too lazy to drive from Hyde Park to 78704 for Sugar Mama's; ain't nothing gonna entice me out to Cedar Park!

Vegetarian Restaurants in Austin?

Kerbey Lane, Magnolia Cafe, Mother's, Veggie Heaven, Pad Thai, Madam Mam's, Galaxy Cafe, Mandola's Italian.

Austin is a pretty veg-friendly city. I think you'll find options anywhere you go, even for BBQ (Ruby's has veg options, as does Franklin's).

Dos Batos behind Northcross Mall

Is that the place next to Sandy's Shoes?

Today's Austin Food-Related Groupon

Today it's $10 for $20 worth of food at Taj Palace. My husband and I are on the fence, as the last time we had takeout from there, it didn't really blow our hair back, but on the other hand, it seems like a convenient thing to have on hand when we don't want to cook.

Thoughts?

What's in Allendale?

Believe me, I am aware. I'm readying my all-muumuu wardrobe as we speak!

What's in Allendale?

I would also add to stay away from Taco Shack, because those are the most bland tacos I've ever had in my life. I'd go up to Gracy Farms for Tacodeli.

"I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today ": Best Hamburger in Austin

You're going to think this is totally lame, but I recently had the turkey burger at Hyde Park and LOVED it. Very nicely seasoned, not too heavy in the belly, an appropriate bun. YMMV.

Anyone have an opinion on Phara's tonight for a b-day dinner?

Wait, is it your birthday? Don't you get the final say?

Vino Vino has good mussels and fries, FWIW, and a cute but small back patio.

Tony Bourdain is coming to Austin: Where should his handlers send him?

And what does it mean that he's not actually present at these tapings? I keep hearing that NR is filming (so far at ESK and Gourdough's, tonight at Odd Duck and perhaps tomorrow at Franklin's), but that Bourdain isn't present. Why is that?

Today's Austin Food-Related Groupon

I think this is a great deal for people who live that far out. But as a central city-dweller, I don't find the cupcakes there worth the drive, especially with Polkadots and Sugar Mama's within a more reasonable distance. Hope you like your c'cakes, tho!

Plus, I don't think I want to eat ANYTHING that's fried in the oil of light olive virgins.

Yeah, I smell an insider.

Tony Bourdain is coming to Austin: Where should his handlers send him?

Just saw on Twitter that they'll be at Liberty Bar this Tuesday at 10pm.

Sunday Brunch

There are TONS of good restaurants downtown. Frank, Chez Nous, El Sol Y La Luna, Annie's (I hear), Jo's, Eddie V's, Truluck's, Parkside, 1886 at the Driskill, Moonshine (ish, good cocktails), Aquarelle, just off the top of my head.

Not much in the way of Tex-Mex downtown proper, but lots of stuff on the Eastside.

Salt Lick BBQ ?

I really like their cobbler, too.
