New Places to look forward to - Orlando - 2012

Prato is great. I've been to the Fogo in Philly and its good as well.

Armando's looks cook, and Tasting Room is just too damn far from me (I live in SE Orlando).

Really haven't heard of anything else.

Orlando area top 10 - February 2012

Been there once. I always go to the Super Oriental Market across from Lac Viet. Just closer, around other things, and always has what I need.

Orlando area top 10 - February 2012

I've dined out everywhere in Orlando, and I agree that Chinese is lacking with the exception of Ming's Bistro for dim sum and Tasty Wok for some noodles. I'd die for a real Szechuan place in Orlando.

I'd also die for a real Jewish Deli in Orlando.

Orlando area top 10 - February 2012

I've been meaning to chime in on this topic. Here's my top 10, in no particular order other than the top 2 picks:

1. Luma on Park
2. Ravenous Pig
3. Prato
4. Lac Viet
5. Ming's Bistro
6. Shin Jung
7. Bosphorus
8. Primo
9. K
10. Pho Hoa

Other honorable mentions are King Cajun, Tasty Wok, Hawkers, Ba Le Bakery (before it closed), Thai Singha, Ashriwad, Hot N' Juicy, and Pio Pio.

Where can I buy harissa in Orlando?

Good news. Whole Foods on Turkey Lake now carries Harissa.

It's in the pasta isle of all places, and has a big NEW ITEM sign on it.

65th Wedding Anniversary...

My grandparents are celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary at the end of April, and being the resident foodie of the family, I've been put in charge of picking the restaurant to celebrate. Most of the people live in Miami Beach, but I'm open to anything in the Miami area really.

The party will be 20-25 people, but the difficult part I'm having is its a large mix of people. We're a Cuban American family, but the ages range from late 20's to early 90's. Some are very adventurouse eaters, but some of the older people in the group can't do anything spicy.

I could do a Cuban restaurant, but that seems to obvious and we eat that kind of food all the time. Also thinking of doing Spanish food like paellas and such, since that will at least be familiar to the older guests.

But really, I'm just looking for some suggestions. Also, a private or semi-private room might be nice, but not required.

Dim Sum In Orlando

Not that much, just the experience really. Make sure to order some roast duck and crispy skin pork too.

Where can I buy harissa in Orlando?

Whole Foods doesn't carry it.

Dim Sum In Orlando

Ming's Bistro has dim sum every day. However its only on the weekends that they have dim sum on push carts (10:30-3pm on Sat/Sun).

Either way, it is the best dim sum in Orlando.

NYC Christmas Vacation Dining Itinerary...

Kin Shop has been on and off of my list for some reason. I love Perilla, so I can't imagine Harold not making good food. Maybe it's time to put it back in the list.

NYC Christmas Vacation Dining Itinerary...

OK, so after reading some of the reviews of Degustation recently, I'm rethinking that dinner.

Would like to stay around $200 for the meal for 2, everything included. You see that I'm already doing Italian, American farm to table, Asian, etc... To be honest, I'm just looking for a great meal so I'm open to really anything.

Any suggestions or favorites in that price range?

NYC Christmas Vacation Dining Itinerary...

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to look at the other Italian options and decide.

I'm actually going to Ssam Bar twice, once for the reg menu and once to try the duck dishes.

NYC Christmas Vacation Dining Itinerary...

I love pizza and Japanese! The pizza stops will be more casual for me, so I'll probably just grab a slice or two as the week goes on. And while I love Japanese, I'd just rather spend my money on the other things this trip.

For the Italian, I've yet to try Osteria Morini and love White's other restos, so I wanted to give it a shot. I've been to dell'anima, Babbo, and Scarpetta before, but not Locanda Verde or Maialino. Would you recommend any of those two over OM?

My wife loves sausages, so I figured DBGB would make both of us happy as I can get pates as well there.

I was not aware that Degustation had a new chef. Have you heard anything about the quality/experience suffering?

Szechuan Gourmet and Ssam are old favorites, so there's no way I could come back to NYC and not go there.

And Mas Farmhouse is where we're having NYE dinner. Been there before and loved it, and its also really convenient to the NYE party we're going to afterwards.

NYC Christmas Vacation Dining Itinerary...

My annual Christmas vacation dining itinerary is set. Very happy with my choices, some old favorites and some new ones too. Here’s the list:

Russ & Daughters
Katz Deli
Osteria Morini
Marea
DBGB
Szechuan Gourmet
Degustation
Pio Pio
Minetta Tavern
Perilla
Mas Farmhouse
Momofuku Ssam

Can’t wait to eat my way through the city over 7 days. If there’s any other MUST TRY places that you wouldn’t visit NYC without going, please feel free to share.

EMP dress code for lunch...

Would jeans be appropriate for lunch at EMP? They'd be nice jeans with shoes (no sneakers) and a sweater/collared shirt.

Not sure if I'd feel out of place with jeans on.

Blue crabs in Cocoa Beach area?

Our favorite place to get blue crabs in Cocoa Beach recently closed (Crab Heaven).

Does anyone have any other recommendations in that area?

Brioche bread in Orlando?

All I've been able to find are brioshe rolls for burgers, but I'm looking for a brioche loaf of bread somewhere in Orlando. Can anyone help me locate it?

Mozzerela cheese curds in Orlando?

Looking to make some fresh mozzerela, but can't find the curds in Orlando. Can anyone help?

New entry for Orlando's best burger

I don't care for the food at Pine 22. I've posted this before, and maybe its b/c they just opened, but they had lame excuses for poor execution on a lot of items from their menu (fried egg being over done b/c some pans are hotter than others?).

I've heard good things about the buger at Nona Tap Room. Gonna have to check that out soon since its right near my house.

Orlando's most under-rated restaurant

Its definitely Italian-American. Mostly traditional red sauces. Its good for Italian-American in Orlando, but its not mind blowing or anything in my opinion.

I'd say Rocco's and Enzo's are both better, but again, neither of those is mind blowing either. Just good, solid Italian for Orlando.

Orlando's most under-rated restaurant

I haven't been to Tchoup Chop since the new chef arrived, but to me there just weren't enough interesting things on the menu. I can have dumplings, spring rolls, and the like at any Colonial Dr. restaurant.

I've heard its improved since then though, so maybe its time for another visit.

I agree with Luma though. Along with RP, its my favorite restaurant in Orlando.

Best restaurant in the Orlando area?

Do they do the whole character bit in the kitchen too, or are the servers only dressed like that in the main dining room.

I've only eaten in the dining room, but have also eaten at Per Se and don't think the two can be mentioned in the same breathe. So either the kitchen dining at V&A is that much better than the regular dining room, or we just have different opinions of what great food is. Agreed that the price is high, but I think the meal is incredible at Per Se.

Best restaurant in the Orlando area?

I put Luma on Park and Ravenous Pig at the top of my list in Orlando. Really can't go wrong with either place.

As far as V&A's, while the ingredients and preparation are outstanding, for the money I just find the experience too gimicky and would rather spend my money elsewhere.

Knife Sharpeners in Orlando?

So how does this work. I have 1 chef's knife I need sharpened. Is there a place you drop it off, or do they pick it up? If someone would please explain, that would be great...

Hawkers Asian Street Fare (Orlando)

Went to Hawkers last night and was very happy with our visit. There were a few standouts and some solid dishes, and luckily nothing I would rate as not good. I will definitely be back to try out some other items. My brother and I split 10 dishes, none of which were more than $6 or $7.

Crispy skin pork - ordered this twice; it was that good. I would go back just for this.
Roast duck soup - again, and excellent dish. Broth was really flavorful, and the noodles had a perfect consistency.
BBQ pork - good dish, I think we just got some dry pieces. Definitely has potential though.
Roast duck - very nice dish, good crispy skin
Roast duck tacos - I liked this dish, although it just need some moisture b/c based on the ingredients alone, it has a natural tendancy to be dry. Maybe if the cucumbers were more pickled it would have made a difference.
Bulgogi Banh Mi - I liked this dish as well, although I could have used some sriracha with it (I was surprised there were no table condiments like hot sauce or soy sauce).
Green papaya salad - nice, simple, very fresh salad.
Bok Choy in oyster sauce - another good side dish, just with the veggies were cut differently since they were difficult to eat with chopsticks.
Curry meatballs - I liked this dish a lot, but beware that the meatballs are more like the ones you'll find in Pho, and are bascially steamed meat mouse balls. Texture was springy, but I like that so it was successful for me. Curry sauce had good flavor.

All in all the bill was $55 for the 2 of us before tip, which isn't bad for all the tastes we got to try. Will definitely be back to try some other items, and get that crispy skin pork again.

Hawkers Asian Street Fare (Orlando)

Glad I saw this post. Checking Hawkers out tomorrow night before the film festival. I'll post my own review later this week.

Coming to Orlando - 2011

I've heard average/bad reveiws from a couple of my foodie friends about Pine Twenty 2. Eggs on burgers came out well done with no runny yoke, and the waitresses excuse was that the egg doneness varies on how hot the pan is. Really? Don't think I'll be running to check it out.

barJme sounds like a great idea. Love the concept and have been to similiar, but more high end in NYC (Degustation and Momofuku Ko).

Coming to Orlando - 2010

Although I loved the food at Wa, that location was HORRIBLE and it was doomed from the begining. As soon as I left the first time, I told my gf that its a shame that this place will be closed within the year due to location, b/c the food was really good.

Hopefully they'll reopen in a new location...
