Bagel Dogs - Providence?
My husband and I used to love buying bagel dogs at Barney's Bagels in Providence. Does anyone know where to buy them now? Help! Thanks.
Girls weekend in Newport...recs?
Thanks to all! Not sure the address of where we're staying yet -- but I think it's right in town. Yes, we'll have cars, but prefer places to be mostly walkable since we'll be drinking lots of wine! (though, there are a few pregnant ones, so we'll have drivers if necessary). Keep the suggestions coming if anyone else has any. I'll let you know what we decide.
Girls weekend in Newport...recs?
I'm planning a girls weekend in Newport for June for about 8 women in our late 20s/30s. I need recommendations on where to have a special dinner out on a Saturday night. A private room would be great - -but so would a nice round table anywhere. Ideal spot would be fun and funky, not-TOO-expensive, but definitely a step up from pub food. Any thoughts? What about a brunch on Sunday? Thanks.
Pre-Game Dinner around BU/Agganis Arena
Help!
I'm coming to town for the UVM-BU basketball game on Friday (1/25) -- any suggestions on where to grab a decent pre-game meal? Ideally, I'd like a place that's got good food, is not too pricey, and not entirely packed with college kids. If that's too much to ask for, then just give me the decent food suggestions. The game's at Agganis Arena and I'd like to just walk there after dinner.
Thanks....
Martha's Vineyard
Agreed - MVI has some good questions. Where are you staying? With kids? Budget? There are some fabulous fine dining spots all around the island I mostly stick to Edgartown or head up island for dinner spots. Among the best: Detente, Atria, Alchemy, and l'etoile (all pretty pricey -- but interesting & delicious food. L'etoile is definitely a special night out spot with no kids!). Chesca's is fun and lively and pretty good food, while not quite as expensive as the other spots in town. Up island, The Beach Plum Inn and Theos are my faves. Sweet Life Cafe in OB is also fantastic. I must say, I disagree with some of these posts, Lola's may be funky, but the food is mediocre at best and the Newes is definitely good in the winter for good cozy comfort food, but I wouldn't waste a summer day in at their dark tables.
mv recs
Just down there this past weekend -- If I heard correctly, de Forest is reopening Balance in a new location. Think the Oyster Bar has been there for a few seasons (i may be wrong about that).
I love Detente, but didn't get there on my most recent trip...had a great time/meal at Chesca's...though I admit, the food there isn't quite as interesting as the other dining spots around town, at least it's somewhat reasonable and the atmosphere is lively. They could use a good menu change....
Sweet Life Cafe or Atria? Dinner in the "Vineyard"
Both are lovely. You can't really go wrong. I do find Atria's food to be a little more inventive that Sweet Life's, but both are delicious. You could always decide based on where you're staying -- if you're in Edgartown, it's sort of nice to stumble home after dinner at Atria (if you're planning to have cocktails or wine).
Martha's Vineyard - need restaurant recs!
I've been loving Detente in Edgartown my past few visits. Gorgeous, locally-inspired offerings. Prices are a bit steep, but aren't they all on the island?

Good late night Providence
Does Blaze on Thayer have a different menu than their other spot?
Best Smoothies - Providence
I agree. Spoons has the most ridiculous hours. I like the food, but service isn't exactly quick around there. Willl make note next time to try the smoothies.
Best Smoothies - Providence
I like the place that's behind Au Bon Pain on Thayer Street. No idea what it's called -- It's a little hole-in-the-wall that serves crepes and smoothies. No ice stuck on the bottom of these. I grab them pretty frequently when I don't have time for lunch....
Fish markets in Providence?
Wait! I'm out of the loop on WF closing in Wayland Square....what's the story on that?
New menu at Red Stripe?
I actually went there tonight. I live in the neighborhood and stop by quite a bit for an app and a glass of wine (love the sweet potato latke). The "new menu" is simply a few new items added on to their regular menu. New items include baby greens topped with panko-crusted cheve, raspberries, and walnuts; a risotto of the day (tonight it was a seared sea bass over a black bean. sweet corn and garlic risotto...pretty good); steak au poive (in addition to their usual hangar steak frites); a balsalmic glazed chicken sandwich; and a seared scallop entree. That's all I can remember. I can't think of anything that was taken off the menu...just a few additions, as far as I know. Overall, I'm a fan. I like the place, especially considering it's just a few steps from my home and serves as an easy, reasonably-priced, week night outing.
Providence - Haruki Express?
Anyone have the scoop on Haruki Express opening on Thayer and Waterman St?
Walked past it yesterday. What will it offer? And when is it opening?
How do you organize magazine recipes?
Help! I have stacks of cooking magazines with only a few pages folded over in each one.
I'd love to tear the pages out and keep them organized in a recipe-file-type system, so i don't have to keep all of the magazines. I'm looking for more of a book/album - not a recipe box.
Anyone have a good organizer or system they recommend?
Martha's Vineyard luncheon for 50?
I'd skip the tour of the island ...not all that exciting, even for people who are traveling from far away. Instead, you should try to cater a luncheon with a stunning view, or try to do something in town somewhere so people can walk around on their own. Tours by those bus companies are horrendous. So many great catering options...especially if it's during the week, and for lunch! Definitely try the upstairs at Alchemy or outside at Atria. You could also try the deck at the Seafood Shanty, which has mediocre food, but the best view!
Martha's Vineyard - Dining Recommendations??
For a nice evening out, try Detente, tucked away in Edgartown's Nevin Square. It's a little pricey, but well worth it.
They just opened last summer and the chef is one of the most talented on the island.
