looking for a restaurant with a meeting room and reasonably-priced appetizers

I want to throw a wrap party for a short film I'm producing, and I was thinking that I would find a restaurant (anywhere in Houston) that has a meeting room, and where you can buy huge amounts of appetizers without it being hideously expensive. Then everyone would buy their own drinks.

Somewhere between 20-40 people will be there, and I would love to spend less than $200 if possible. Is this possible? Does anyone know a place where I can do something like this with this budget? Or am I being unreasonable?

non-alcoholic black cake recipe?

Never mind! I contacted a Trinidad-based Muslim who has made this cake before, and she printed her tried and true non-alcoholic black cake recipe on her blog: http://chennette.net/2010/10/07/halaa...

Yay!

non-alcoholic black cake recipe?

Thank you all for the great advice--that gives me a good starting point. Unfortunately, I don' t know what black cake is SUPPOSED to taste like, but if I come up with something that tastes good on its own merits, that's good enough for me!

non-alcoholic black cake recipe?

Yes, I know. You are probably wondering why anyone would want a non-alcoholic version of something that is basically the cake version of rum balls.

A few months ago, I read the following short article about the wonderfulness of Caribbean black cake: http://www.powells.com/blog/?p=20532 and I commented to the author that I thought it sounded AMAZING. Well, she happens to know that I am Muslim and don't consume alcohol, and mentioned that you can make this non-alcoholic, and she's had that version, and it's good! Another Caribbean native, one who is Muslim, also told me that she'd had non-alcoholic black cake and confirms that it is very good indeed.

Ever since, I've tried to find a non-alcoholic recipe of Caribbean black cake, but I can't find one anywhere. I know it exists.... does anyone know where I can find this recipe?

Houston grocery stores open on Christmas?

Thank You!!! That did help. I actually called the Randalls stores that are closer to me, and found the one on 1960 & Champion Forest is also open 9-4. Excellent!

Houston grocery stores open on Christmas?

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if any grocery stores will be open on Christmas anywhere in Houston? I called Walmart and HEB near my neighborhood (Willowbrook area), and they are all closed that day, although open till 8pm on Christmas Eve.

Open in Houston, Christmas day

Sushi Choo Choo near FM 1960 & Eldridge is open on Christmas. They are pretty good--if you aren't familiar with them, they are a conveyor-belt sushi place. One of only two I'm aware of in Houston, and the only good one.

Imported Nutella in Houston?

Years ago, before they started making Nutella in the US, I tried some Nutella that my cousin had brought over from Germany. I loved it sooo much and was delighted when they started making it here, because it was no longer as expensive. Unfortunately, it didn't quite taste as good. Does anyone know where I can get a jar of imported Nutella in Houston?

restaurant with meeting room (HOU)

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a restaurant in Houston that has a good, quiet meeting room? It's only for about 10 people, but we're having an actual meeting so we need to hear each other without too many distractions. I know this may be pushing it, but having a whiteboard or chalkboard would be really helpful also.

I know there are non-restaurant meeting rooms around that have these things, but I would like everyone to be able to order food also. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

breakfast in Fredericksburg?

Thanks for the recs. We ate at Rathskeller and it was AMAZING!!! We got smoked salmon an eggs, with coffee. The place is so cute, too, and right on main street. Next time I'm in Fredericksburg, I'm going there again for breakfast.

Regarding Andy's.. we actually ate lunch there once, and we really didn't like it. The food tasted mediocre, and was really greasy. But maybe we just didn't order the right thing, because the B&B we stayed at recommended it, and I can see that two people here say it's good. Oh, well.

breakfast in Fredericksburg?

Can anyone recommend a good place for breakfast in Fredericksburg? I am looking for something that is not just a bakery, and doesn't serve greasy-spoon type stuff. I'm looking for a nice omelette with fresh veggies, something like that.

I searched the boards and found only one recommendation--Rathskeller. That sounds nice, but for the sake of variety, can anyone recommend additional options? Thanks!

quirky breakfast places in Houston

You know, now that I think about it, maybe "artsy" would be a better word for what I'm looking for. Nonetheless, thanks for all the recommendations, I really appreciate it!

quirky breakfast places in Houston

Wow, that place sounds really good. After reading some reviews online, I'm very interested in trying this place.

However, I don't know if this is really the type of place that I'm (also) seeking, as described above. The Breakfast Klub seems more like comfort food.

I don't really know how to put into words what I'm looking for.. maybe there just isn't anything like that here. But thank you for the suggestion, I'll definitely check this one out.

quirky breakfast places in Houston

I've been looking for a quirky breakfast place in Houston, where the food is sort of quasi-gourmet, and the atmosphere has kind of a young-ish, hipster vibe. The closest I've seen to something like this is Empire Cafe, which was just okay for me. The food wasn't that great, although the atmosphere was kind of nice. Can anyone give me some recommendations? Here are some places I've been to in other cities that would fall under this category:

http://www.b-oespresso.com/ - Seattle
http://www.thegriddlecafe.com - Los Angeles
http://www.wildabandonrestaurant.com/ - Portland, OR

dashi in Houston?

Does anyone know where I can find dashi, or dashi granules in Houston? I went to Hong Kong Market and they said they don't stock it (although they stock Miso). I haven't found it at H-E-B, either.

Good place to get a Cake in Houston?

I know it's too late for your mom's birthday, but I wanted to chime in anyway, in case anyone in the same area is looking for a good cake. My top picks are: Drew's bakery, on Louetta & Cutten, Le Petit Paris across from Willowbrook Mall, and... believe it or not, HEB makes really good cakes. their cookies are terrible, but someone brought an HEB cake to a party at my house once w/o telling me where she got it and I assumed it was from some fancy-pants bakery I hadn't been to yet. Not your typical grocery store cake. Also, I've heard great things about RJ Goodies, near Louetta and Steubner Airline.

[Hou] need recs for mid range, non ethnic restaurants around The Woodlands

I'll bet he would like Rudy's. It's a BBQ place on Louetta & Hwy 45

http://rudys.com/

Saltgrass and Steamboat House have great steaks, although those aren't *quite* in Spring, but close.

Central Park deli and Potbelly's have good sandwiches if you like sandwiches. He should try the meatball sandwich at Potbelly's.

Where can I find "wax beans" in Houston?

Thanks so much, esp for reporting on Canino's! I will have to visit the farmer's market this coming weekend.

Where can I find "wax beans" in Houston?

I want to make this recipe: http://www.elise.com/recipes/archives... , but I could not find fresh wax beans at HEB, where I would have expected to find them (and the guy working there didn't know what the heck I was talking about, LOL). Anyone know where I can find these? Are they available at any regular grocery stores? I live way up in Spring, so I'd like to find something closer than, say, Canino's or Whole Foods.

Thanks!

[Houston] Looking for Halal Restaurants

Unfortunately, I've never been to either of those places. If your husband's business associates are near the Galleria, I'd highly recommend Fadi's. I've heard great things about House of Kabob, although it is a bit more casual.

[Houston] Looking for Halal Restaurants

If you want a really great Halal restaurant search site, you can look stuff up here: http://www.zabihah.com/ls.php?id=82. As you can see, there are TONS. Dimassi's and Fadi's are both Halal. The Dimassi's in The Woodlands is really nice, but the one on Richmond looks like a cafeteria. Fadi's.. you pick up your food at the counter (it's laid out really nicely and they put it on your plate for you as you walk down the line), but I think the ambiance is really nice.

By the way, fish is always Halal, because it's not slaughtered, so that's always an option for your Muslim guests as well.

Farmer's markets in Houston?

I live in Spring, and there are two places near here I can recommend:

- Pa's Backyard Grill, on Stuebner Airline & Louetta, behind HEB. This restaurant has an open-air produce market adjacent to it. As far as I know they are open every day. http://www.pasgrill.com

- Grogan's Mill Farmer's Market: This is a traditional saturday-only farmer's market, with organic items and whatnot that is located in The Woodlands. It's small, but substantial. http://www.grogansmillvillage.com/gm_... Find it in the parking Lot of Randall's:
2250 Buckthorne Pl
The Woodlands, TX 77380

[HOU] Frozen Custard

I've been to Connie's, which is waaaaaay north of Houston, but close to where I live, and it is AMAZING. I get the turtle sundae. You know how some things are really unhealthy, but TOTALLY worth the calories? Yeah. This is it. It is a small store that has no indoor seating (I think all frozen custard places are probably like this), and they only take cash.
