Scargoe's Profile

Road trip from Boston to New York, via Rhode Island and Connecticut

You are talking a 4 hour trip in a car. Or are you going by horseback? How many places do you need to try for the trip? Seriously, what day of the week, what time of day? If you still want pizza after eating what I presume is Italian an hour and a half earlier, go to Modern as it's the only one of the "trifecta" you can be more or less sure of getting into (except mondays) without a long or eternal wait. Unless you want the white clam, then Pepe's is a must, wait or not. Keep in mind that there is a Pepe's in Fairfield, half an hour down I-95 from New Haven and the white clam there is just as good as New Haven without the usual wait. Nardelli's, why?

Lunch spots off I-75 GA-FL line

Well, the Georgia Pig just went out of business (Brunswick) the other day so there isn't much else in the area. I'd pack a bag lunch and watch out for the speed trap in Kingsland on I-95 at mm 5 or so.

Lunch near Thomaston, Ct

I'm trying to set up a lunch for several old friends (men) somewhere near Thomaston as a central point. Normally we'd go to the Black Rock Grille but it's not open Mondays and we have to do this next week on a Monday. I would appreciate any suggestions of alternate similar restaurants in the surrounding general area as I am not that familiar with it. Not high class but not a total dump, with full bar and decent food but laid back enough so we can hang around for a couple of hours. Thanks for any help Hounds.

Subpar [Kamal, New Haven, CT]

I can't seem to find a restaurant name in this post unless it's "Subpar".

Ruth's Chris Providence -- Prices

Try this link: http://www.sizzlingsteak.com/p/DINNERMENU1010.pdf This isn't for RI but should be in the ballpark. I'd say $150 would be the best bet so it's not more that the bill and will likely be.

great fried clams w/ bellies and onion rings in ct

They are both the same place and both addresses are correct depending on whether you want the town street or the State route number. Personally in my opinion the restaurant is living on past glories and doesn't deserve a visit by anyone for their fried food. Terrible, odd colored batter which falls off the food and is grossly overpriced.

Best Soft Shell Crab spot on Ct Shoreline betw New Haven and RI

Had Lenny's last week and I can't recommend them as their batter has changed over time as they are not the crunchy golden brown of old but a much soggier coating and really their prices are no bargain. Better off across the street at the Blue cottage. Further west, the Westbrook Lenny and Joes Fish Tale has been consistently good. Not the Madison one, as they have batter problems on most of thr fried food...occasionally ok but not dependable.
Bills in Westbrook usually does a good job with the crabs.

Venice Italian, Not the best

Cafe Italian Italia Ristorante is the third resurrection of an Italian restaurant in the same building just off the Tamiani Trail by the Hampton Inn in Venice. The previous restaurant was far superior than what is here now. The prices are high for the meager portions and the service is really not very good. They have been open now for a reported 2 and a half months and I'm sure they will not be here at this time next year, If you crave Italian food, Mama Leone's a couple miles up the Trail (41) is much better and won,'t set you back any where as much.

Where's the best place to get a seafood meal while driving the Connecticut coast?

You can get all you are looking for including a decent raw bar at the Chowderpot in Branford. Reasonable prices and good food.. Exit 56 off I-95.

Captain's Galley closed

The Captains Galley of ten years ago was a different animal. In my more recent visits there, it was on the downhill slide with the "fresh" fish still frozen in the middle (on two occasions). Some of the help was less than congenial, and this was at lunch time with there being no large crowd to manage.
It needs a total redo of the entire restaurant and I hope someone may buy it and do so, as there is certainly a demand for waterfront seafood on the west shore.

Thanksgiving dinner-location halfway between New Haven, CT and Briarcliff Manor, NY

A slight alteration of intended routes could bring you to the Curtis House Inn and Restaurant, Woodbury, Ct www.curtishouseinn.com . They are taking reservations for Thanksgiving and would be an excellent old inn type setting for the day

Octoberfest

Harugari Singing Society is having two Oktoberfest events in Oktober in West Haven, Ct. their website is: http://www.harugari.org/2010_schedule.html
They are open to the public and charge $3 a head admission. Food and drink are extra. We went to the first bierfest this year and it was a lot of fun...like something out of the 1950's.

What Is Missing in Mid Coast Maine

I couldn't agree more!!! Keep it that way. If you want that crap, go back to New Yawk!!

German Restaurants in CT?

Sorry to say, this link is grossly outdated and nearly useless in Ct.

Connecticut Pizza

You most certainly cannot get the same clam pie as Pepe's at Modern. Pepe's uses fresh clams and Modern uses canned. There is no comparison. Modern is better with anything in the red apizza category but definitely not the white clam.

Best Doughnuts in CT?

Neil's is the best. If they weren;t crowded on a Sunday morning, they wouldn't be worth going to.

Any restaurants you can recommend for Venice,FL area?

Scamotz is the best pizza in Florida. Sharkey's and Pop's Sunset Grille are there for the view. The food is secondary and Pop's punch's alone is worth the trip. Phillipi Creek is a tourist trap with an attitude and I agree on Marker 4.

Any restaurants you can recommend for Venice,FL area?

The Ivy Steakhouse recently opened in a small shopping center on the 41 Bypass in Venice. Nicely decorated, and the steaks we had on our one visit were definitely far superior in quality to say, an Outback, not that that takes a lot. I would try it again as prices are reasonable for the food and drinks, and the complete meal comes with the entree selection; soup/salad, starch and vegetable. The steaks we had were cooked to perfection.
My main gripe was the continual use of the term "you guys" by some of the waitstaff to customers. Though I should have called our server on it, I didn't want to spoil what was a very pleasant dining experience, so I didn't. Minor gripe was the tiny salt and pepper shakers and the huge square plates the meal comes on. The food looks lost on them.

Sans-Souci Restaurant, Meriden CT.

The Sans Souci is a gem of a restaurant with well prepared American dishes at reasonable prices. They have a couple of back rooms for private parties of varying sizes.
It is an old Howard Johnsons building and you could call the decor somewhat dated. For an older person, you couldn't pick a better spot for a birthday party. For a 25 year old it is probably too sedate.

Help me find a Connecticut pizza place.

Don't bother putting D'Errico's on your list. It's been gone for at least a couple of years. It was good, but all good things come to an end.

Help me find a Connecticut pizza place.

Olde World Apizza in North Haven on Whitney Ave just about a half mile off the Wilbur Cross Parkway exit 61 meets almost all of your criteria with the possible "not urban area"
reference being the exception. It is in a mixed commercial/residential area on the outskirts on North Haven with Hamden right across the street.

Sarasota Barbecue

I have enjoyed the Gold Rush Barbeque a few miles south in Venice on Business 41.

Lunch in Branford, CT

Tommy Sullivans has pretty good diner/bar food. I wouldn't go so far as to call it great. They do, however, pour a great drink. On the rocks is about double the amount at most places. My only negative comment is about the meatball grinder that occasionally pops up on the daily menu...worse than Subway! What can be expected, it's an Irish place, not Italian.

Cheshire/New Haven CT area: transplant needs recommendations!

Sorry to tell you, but I have no idea of who owns it. I assume they are related based on the name along with the North Haven and Clinton ones, as well as one in Madison, but all I know is that in about 10 tries, 8 have been quite good for the town of Cheshire.

Cheshire/New Haven CT area: transplant needs recommendations!

I don't understand your question.

Cheshire/New Haven CT area: transplant needs recommendations!

My personal opinion of the best apizza in Cheshire is Grand Apizza, Cheshire which is a recent arrival located on Route 10 in the center of town. Doesn't compare to Modern or the other well known New Haven pizzerias but it's here and they deliver. Brix, a Mediterranean themed restaurant has been around for a long time and usually gets decent reviews though I personally have not been for 6 or 7 years.
No good reason for not going except that I normally tend to eat out of town as apparently do most of the residents.
Another possibility to try might be Yellowfins for seafood in the Everybody's Market shopping center. I have never been as I don't care for shopping center restaurants in general which is not really a valid reason, I'm probably missing some gems because of this prejudice.
Waverly Tavern from what I have seen is a favorite watering hole for many locals, It has a prime rib special on Saturday nights which is a really good deal and worth getting there early to take advantage of before they run out. The Victorian House nearly next door to the Waverly is pretty much the same type of place, active bar scene with attached dining rooms which serve passable though not outstanding food. They do a good job with French onion soup.

lunch recs in New Haven

Now really...Pepe's if you want clam pie and "Ambience". Clam pie is a given at Pepe's; but how is the "Ambience" in any way better than Modern?

Pates-Chatham

Everything jillian said is true except the clientele is more diverse than she makes it sound. I was going there in my 30's and the main reason was the prime rib which was carved in plain view of the main dining room. It was, and still is, as of my most recent visit last year, the best thing on their menu and I will be back.
Maybe not cutting edge but worth a trip if you have beef in mind.

Blue Cottage (Branford, CT)

I too find some of the negativity surprising for the Blue Cottage where I have been twice. Noisy, yes it is, and the service has been amateurish and slow. Bar service was particularly slow on a recent Sunday evening. I'm sure that will be soon rectified when receipts suffer.
The food was very good and I really like their RI style clam chowder. Good soft shells crabs and the Flat iron steak was cooked to perfection and more tender than expected, possibly due to it's being marinated?
I think carpeting and curtains would help the noise situation but it's good enough that I will be back.
