Fairway Market - Woodland Park

Does anyone know if the bagels, baguettes, etc. at the Fairway in Woodland Park, NJ are kosher? It's very unclear - the display cases don't have the individual R' Marmorstein logo by each item like they do in their NYC and Long Island stores. There's just a generic "kosher" sign over the display case.

The baguettes are in the standard Fairway sleeve with the Marmorstein and Chof -K logos, but they'e covered up by the Fairway price sticker. Can't tell if that's deliberate or not.

I know the cakes and whatnot aren't certified anymore outside the city, but all i care about are the bread products. I tried reaching out to Fairway and R' Marmorstein, but haven't gotten a response yet.

FWIW, according an email I've seen from the cRc, KOA is only acceptable on a case by case basis (this was in response to a question about a different restaurant. KOA also, TTBOMK, appear on other agencies "acceptable" list.

But, like all things, ask your LOR.

The Vaad of Riverdale allowed you to be your own mashgiach? That sounds very surprising.

Large Jewish communities WITHOUT a kosher restaurant

You need a critical mass of people for it to work. How many people in a smaller Jewish community are going to go out on a semi-regular basis, to the same restaurant. You'd get pretty sick of the food pretty quickly.

I believe the deli in Bloomfield has closed. Which is not surprising, considering that it was hardly ever open to begin with.

Waterbury's pizza is beyond disgusting. West Hartford has zilch these days.

Which technically isn't a problem.

"elatin and isinglass clarifiers are not used in domestic beers. Isinglass finings is a traditional British beer clarifier that has been used for centuries in the United Kingdom. Isinglass (pronounced i-zin’glas) is a gelatinous substance made from the swim bladders of certain fish - usually sturgeon, a non-kosher fish. Like gelatin, it causes yeast to settle out of the beer more rapidly. It is fascinating to note that over two hundred years ago the great halachic authority, the Noda Beyehuda, permitted the use of the isinglass clarifier.1 A clarifier only filters unwanted particles and should not be present in the final beverage."

Gotchya. Have you ordered from them before? Curious as to the quality of the meat.

All true, but last time I looked into this, he didn't have an outside hashgacha. I don't doubt his credentials though.

There's an obvious conflict of interest when the owner of the business also provides the kashrus supervision.

It appears I was mistaken. They now have outside hechser. Whoo Hoo! (Though I am not familiar with this sephardic hechser)

I've been dying to try some of Bisra's stuff for years, but I'm not comfortable ordering from them until they get outside kashrus supervision. Sadly, I don't think that's ever going to happen.

Ari, I believe that's because fat conducts heat better than meat.

And your brisket is amazing.

I agree. The benefits of extra marbling is probably lost over a multi-hour smoking process.

Incorrect. USDA grading is voluntary. There's a reason you don't see USDA grading on most kosher beef. Kosher beef is expensive enough as it is.

Fairway Breads No Longer Kosher?

What about the bread, bagels and rolls?

Great American Health Bar/57th Street

Exactly. Restaurants use Tablet-K and other "more lenient" hechserim that are not widely accepted because the costs associated with going "mehadrin" clearly outweigh the benefits. If they'd make more money going with the OU, they'd do it a heartbeat.

Especially for a dairy restaurant - I'd be stunned if GAHB didn't use Tablet-K cheese, which is usually cheaper than other kosher certified cheeses.

Fairway Breads No Longer Kosher?

No, this is something else. I'm not talking about the baked goods which were the past issue (which has been partially resoloved). I'm talking about the breads, the bagels, those stuff. The Chaf-K and Marmonstein logo was blacked out.

Fairway Breads No Longer Kosher?

I was at the Fairway on 125th Street in Manhattan this morning and noticed that the kosher symbols next to all the breads, bagels, baked goods, etc. were blacked out with a magic marker. I asked if this was a Passover thing, but was told no, that the bakery is no longer kosher. It's possible that the woman behind the counter had no idea what she was talking about, but just a headsup.

Horseradish question

It's very hit or miss. Really depends on the year's crop. But you should always hand grate, cover it with plastic and prepare it as close to Yom Tov as possible.

Did you put it in the fridge before it cooled down? Some claim that putting in to soon into the fridge can cause the soup to sour.

Breaking News: Quality kosher wines now exists

"In America, kosher restaurants have to stock mevushal wines, but in Paris, London and Jerusalem there is more flexibility. The mashgiah can act as the wine waiter, and/or the customer may open his own bottle."

I think Jezebel initially tried that, but Rabbi Melhman stopped, claiming it wasn't working or something.

Parmigiano-Reggiano Substitute?

To clarify - I'm not looking for vegan alternatives to cheese, I'm just curious if there are any other cheeses that come anywhere close to real Parmigiano-Reggiano.
