Toronto: ISO tortilla press

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brilliant! GREAT idea. Will do. Thanks so much.

Toronto: ISO tortilla press

Thanks everyone, appreciate the replies. I'll probably check out St. Lawrence as that's closest to me. I'm an east-ender, and the only place (I've found) that carries corn tortillas is Sun Valley, and they're the pre-bagged, refrigerated, preservative-laden jobbies.

As for the masa, I have some MaSeCa, and was going to make my own using that.

Again, thanks very much.

The title says it all: I'm looking to buy a tortilla press, but haven't been looking in the right places.

Thanks!

Re-packaging frozen fish into smaller pieces: tips?

Thanks very much everyone. Yes, it's not lost on me that it's not really a problem! It's a real treat to enjoy such gorgeous, wild fish.

For the time being I decided to leave the chunks as-is (as per BadaBing), as I don't want to compromise the texture by having it out of the freezer a second longer than it needs to. If I end up doing something novel I'll post back to benefit anyone searching this board in future.

@pweller, that's encouraging, I'll be sure to try that (but the fish is pretty thick--these filets are from 25+lb salmon).

'QUATRE-FOODIES' trying out 'QUATREFOIL' ( long with photos )

Just as an FYI, the "culinary wasteland' comment is, I believe, a quote from Toronto Life's print version restaurant guide issue--I haven't seen it in a couple months, but it seems to ring a bell (and to Charles' credit he has the expression in quotes too).

@Mike--you forgot Roma pizza! That's what I miss most about Hamilton...

Oshawa: fruit and cheese basket?

Ordered one from Buckingham Meats

Buckingham Meat Market
28 Buckinghams Street
Oshawa, Ontario
905.725.2213
http://www.buckinghammeatmarket.com/contactus.htm

They need 1 day of lead time, but will deliver. The basket I ordered included cheeses, fruit, crackers, kolbassa, and other goodies.

Oshawa: fruit and cheese basket?

Can anyone recommend a place that will deliver a nice fruit and cheese basket in Oshawa? A Google shows some florists will do it, but I question the quality of the cheese involved (ie. suspicious of nasty Danish Camembert in a can).

Thanks.

Re-packaging frozen fish into smaller pieces: tips?

I have dozens of 2-4lb frozen pieces of frozen salmon and halibut (fileted, boneless, skin-on). The lodge cryovac'd them for us, then shipped them. They've been frozen since they were caught.

I'd like to somehow reportion them into smaller ~1lb pieces because we're a small family, and there's no way we can eat 2-4lbs of fish in 2 days.

My only thought is to use a saw of some kind to saw the fish (frozen, so I don't thaw and refreeze), then cryovac it again (I have one at home) to put back in the freezer.

Please share any tips, suggestions, or personal experiences with dealing with this sort of thing. Thanks!

Toronto: place that will smoke fish I provide

My husband is catching it in northern BC (he has a licence, lodge is cleaning it, but I guess it doesn't meet regulations for a fed facility). His usual haul is 60+lbs of chum (which is pretty decent when it's not canned!), spring, and another type of salmon that I can't remember.

Gravlax is an *excellent* idea--I hadn't thought of that. Thanks! And I will hot smoke some of it too.

Toronto: place that will smoke fish I provide

Thanks so much BusterRhino. That is pretty reasonable and makes sense. Don't blame you one bit.

Truth be told, I got lazy when I was typing and wrote "etc" instead of "not legally able to"--the one place where the conversation got as far as "so where is this fish from?" ended like that. Soooo I guess that would apply to any smoking facility, not just a large-scale operation, eh? I was (vainly) hoping that it could be done legally somehow, perhaps using equipment dedicated to private smoking.

Time to post on the "Home Cooking" board...

Toronto: place that will smoke fish I provide

Looking for a place that will smoke fish for me. Cold smoke is preferred, but hot is fine too. Do not wish to do it myself.

The following places have already said "no" for various reasons (don't have right equipment, currently closed, won't disclose vendor, etc.):
-Kristapsons
-Valentino's Smokin Fish
-Starsky
-Central Epicure

Thanks in advance.

New restaurant Coxwell/Danforth, Authentic Poutines and Philly Cheese steak?

I heard there's a fast food-y place opening/open just east of the Shoppers' Drug Mart, where Mr. Sub used to be--is that it? Or is your friend referring to Sir Sub, right by Greenwood station (I know you said Coxwell, but Sir Sub is between Coxwell and Greenwood).

Patisserie La Cigogne opening on Danforth?

Free croissants?! What the hell, I had to pay for mine (at 10am).

Either way, I'm happy they're open (FINALLY).

Sunday was nuts there, so it will be interesting to see if it was just opening day excitement or if it will be like that every weekend.

Went yesterday too, and pretty much everything I had was good: eclair, choc. croissant, almond croissant, plain croissant, apricot danish, blueberry danish, and apple danish. Also had a piece of their "Harmony" cake and found the mousse gorgeously light and delicate. I wasn't crazy about their baguette as I like mine chewier.

Patisserie La Cigogne opening on Danforth?

Called them on Saturday and was told they'd be opening this Sunday, June 19th.

@Atahualpa and Charles: You guys may very well be right (all I ever really got at Cigogne is croissants), but it's a step in the right direction for the 'hood. Look a few blocks east at Woodbine where Celena's brought Cozy Cafe and Caketown. Maybe Rahier will follow!

NEW COFFEE SHOP OPENING AT QUEEN/WOODBINE

Went last week (? or sometime in the past two weeks).

The good:
-beautifully decorated and clean
-fair trade coffee
-very friendly gentleman made my drink (and it was awesome)

The bad:
-all seating is wood, and bench-y (i.e. your butt will be sore if you decide to hang out, and the lack of seat backs means your back will be too)
-slim pickin's on the snacks part. Maybe 4 cookies and squares.

All in all, I think the spot has potential, and hopefully will do better with take-out orders in the warmer weather. It really is a beautiful space.

NEW COFFEE SHOP OPENING AT QUEEN/WOODBINE

AWESOME. Thanks for the tip! Yes, it's very easy to miss--I didn't even think it was a cafe. So glad to have something non-chain in the area.

Patisserie La Cigogne opening on Danforth?

Their signage is in the old Casa Giorgio restaurant at Danforth and Monarch Park (between Greenwood and Coxwell); at first, I thought I was hallucinating. This is a much larger space than the Bayview location. As an area resident I am THRILLED by the additition to the neighbourhood.

Ethiopian Shrimp in Toronto?

Rendez Vous on Danforth (between Coxwell and Greenwood) has shrimp wot and fish tibs on their menu. I've never ordered either so can't comment.

First Offal Foray?

"I disagree with the other posters who suggested things like cheek, tail, or tongue. Those three cuts and heart, essentially taste quite close to the meat from the same animal and won't really take you anywhere you haven't been, flavor wise."

True, but for that very reason they're a great babystep into more taboo parts, even if not technically offal.

fresh crab

Anytime I've been there, Rodney's has had fresh/live crab. It's not cheap though, but they do know how to handle live seafood.

paczki

Further to this, any places east of the DVP? I wasn't thrilled with the ones from Loblaws (cloying, nasty industrial bakery filling as per sweetpea).

Lalibela Ethiopian on Danforth near Donlands - Anyone tried it?

Got takeout last week from the Danforth location (it's between Greenwood and Coxwell, further east than Donlands). I found the spicing on the timid side, but I thought the food was fresher than some other Ethiopian places in the area.

Anything decent near the Science Centre?

Hey, we have the same family! After we go to the Science Centre, we often go a bit further north to Island Foods (just north of Lawrence); it's fast-food style, so no waiting, which is great when you're hungry. In the same plaza is Gonoe Sushi, which is also very good. Both restaurants have been more than accommodating to our family.

The Burger's Priest - Queen and Coxwell

As if a thread with 223 replies needs another voice, but here goes...

Had a double patty, and found it a bit too much (I have a normal-large appetite); also greasier than I'm used to. That being said, it was excellent. Next time I'll order a single patty, and skip the cheese. Great fries too.

PEPSI Throwback- have you seen it?

Saw it at Loblaws Vic Park and Danforth yesterday.

Help with Toronto fruit/gift basket deivery

I often order (and recieve!) from All The Best. I wouldn't say the fruit included is exotic, but it's always in excellent condition.

Toronto: ISO Italian pasta condiment "aglio olio & peperoncino"

Found a container of it, albeit another brand, at Jerry's Supermarket (Danforth, between Greenwood and Coxwell; many other Italian groceries available). "La Cosentina," distributed by Aurora foods.

Insideman, oh, goodness, of course! Yeah, if that was the dish I was making would definitely use fresh. Dried parsley is beyond pointless. I use it as a table condiment. My friends who brought it back for me said that all the places they went to in Bologna served the pasta course with small bowls of parmesan and the chili-garlic mix.

Joey, I still haven't made it up to Eddystone as I'm at the other end of the city, but will be sure to try to go soon.

NYT review, Chinese, loud music, not amazing: can't remember the name!

Thank you both, yes, Xiao Ye. Normally I'm only about the chow, but it sounded like a fun place.

NYT review, Chinese, loud music, not amazing: can't remember the name!

Can anyone help me? I can't remember the name of the restaurant! The review would have been since Sept '10, and Google just isn't of much help.
-Chinese, with a couple Western twists (Mac n' cheese I think?)
-late-night
-loud hip-hop
-food not spectacular, but servicable
And I'll be damned if I can remember the neighbourhood, but pretty sure it's south of Midtown.
Thanks so much!

CSA`s in gta, any help (communityt supported agriculture)

It's not quite a CSA, but you might be interested in the Good Food Box from FoodShare. Less of a commitment than a CSA. Local focus, but not exclusively local (so you will get bananas alongside your kale).
