40th Birthday Dinner - Downtown San Diego

I live in LA, and I'm trying to plan a 40th birthday dinner for a friend who lives in San Diego. I'd like to a somewhat high end restaurant with great food in or near downtown for a smallish celebration dinner. A lively atmosphere would be great, but I'd prefer great food over a scene. That said, I'm thinking more a small plates kind of place than a 7 course tasting menu. Any recommendatons are appreciated. Thanks!

OC Brunch off the 5

I live in LA, and I'm meeting a friend who lives in San Clemente for brunch on Sunday. We'd like to meet somewhere in the OC (since she usually drives to me), but off the 5 since that is the most convenient for her. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Trendy, Hollywoodish, reasonable place for visiting 13 year old from KY

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'd blocked Ketchup from my memory after my dress stuck to the table the last time I was there, but she would LOVE it. I've got to see if my parents would be willing to accomodate her enought to eat there. If not, I'll try one of the other suggestions and maybe I'll take her there for lunch.

My cousin is bringing her Hollywood obsessed daughter to visit from Kentucky in two weeks. I've been tasked with coming up with a restaurant that (a) is kind of trendy, (b) won't cause my relatives to pass out from the prices (maybe $25 entrees tops), (c) isn't too strange for them (my mom vetoed my dad's choice of Korean bbq), (d) has somewhat decent food and (e) will accept a reservation for 11-13 people on 2 weeks notice. Easy, right? So far, I've come up with Cobras & Matadors in Los Feliz. Any help would be appreciated.

Oh, and I've already scored tickets to a taping to a Disney show, so star sighting is not a requirement.

Thanks!
