What to do with too dry cake?

when serving a slice, place at the bottom of a dessert bowl, sprinkle with liqueur (I would use coffee liqueur) then a dollop of whipped cream.

West Island Best Kept Secrets

On Sunday I was pleasantly surprised to find Afroditi in the Mourelatos store, just past the front entrance. They have a nice counter, with lots of cakes and pastries. Of course I didn't resist. A great addition to the neighbourhood.

Anyone know where I can get Banana Leaves to make tamales?

In freezer sections of most grocery stores in Chinatown.

How about 40West?

New Yorker seeks BEST EATS in Montreal for friend's birthday

I noticed that you have poutine planned for Saturday afternoon and APDC for Saturday night. Since they're both heavy, you may wish to have the poutine on another day. I like 5ieme Peche very much, so I second that vote.

Vivaldi - Pierrefonds

Glad you enjoyed it, & great to read your review, Haggisboy. The grilled octopus sound good. And chocolate cheesecake - how wonderfully decadent! Super.
I've taken note of the tortellini putanesca mentioned by Troy Mercury, sounds good.
I too live walking distance to this restaurant. I usually go early to avoid crowds/noise and that works well for me.

Lunch in St-Henri / Centre Sud / Griffintown

have you tried La Mesa Latina? they have daily lunch specials as well as an a nice assortment of empanadas. The cook and her brother are from Mexico, and there is also a gentleman from Chile there who I think makes the empanadas.

Out of way, "cheapish/mid-priced" Montreal resto for Sat night, maybe BYOB

How about Monsieur B? I went about 3 weeks ago and liked it. It's byob.

West Island Seafood

No problem, Haggisboy, glad that bit of info helped. Food is still excellent there. Make sure to make a reservation though as it fills up esp. late in the week and weekends. Also, let us know how the octopus is and whatever other dishes you try.

BLUE MOUNTAIN COFFEE EMERGENCY

I found this - link below. I didn't know Costco had blue mountain coffee :

How about Vivaldi? bring your own wine...

Don't think they have 'exotic', but their fried squid, for example, is excellent. I've had their mixed seafood with linguini, good, but the tomato sauce was quite dark/rich for the more subtle seafood. Maybe try another preparation. I see they serve fish as well. I've had the veal marsala and pasta with different sauces and everything has been very, very good. I don't know if you've been there already, but the strip mall that it's in doesn't look like much - inside the restaurant is quite a different story. It's large, nicely decorated, open kitchen concept (well ventilated, you don't end up smelling of food afterwards or anything), and the service is amazingly good.

Just a note about Panama. I was there for the first time last night and maybe I hit a bad night, but the food was not good. The calamari were inedible because they were almost dripping with oil and other problems with the rest of the food. Service was great though. My opinion fyi.

Best Margaritas and Tex-Mex?

What's good in El Meson, EaterBob? I've often been tempted to stop in.

Santana's Mexican

I was there on Saturday and I'm sorry to say that the food was not at all to my liking. I tried three different items and disliked each. I found everything bland, and I suspect cans and jars were used instead of making stuff from scratch (beans, tomatillo sauce, etc.).
Whatever the cause of the lack of flavour (& in the case of the beef, it was way too salty), for us it was inedible. We ate the nachos plate because we were hungry but it was nothing special, very plain and bland. When our other dishes arrived, we had a bite from each dish and left the rest of the food. Needless to say we won't be going back and I will not recommend this place to friends.

French or Quebecois restaurant Downtown (near Blvd Maisonneuve Ouest and Rue Mansfield)

I've been to Beaver Hall for lunch about 3 times with co-workers who wanted to go there; it's ok, not more than that IMO.

Oaxaca- La Biznaga or Zandunga?

.. stopped in for a cocktail & 2 appetizers at Casa Oaxaca late one evening, I came across it by sheer luck. Food was very good, presentation excellent and service over and above excellent. I liked it so much I went for lunch the next day with a friend. Recommend it.

Au Cinquieme Peche will relocate

I only noticed after I posted this, thanks.

Au Cinquieme Peche will relocate

I was at Au Cinquieme last night. Apparently this, or next (they were not certain at that moment), Saturday will be their last day before the close to relocate elsewhere, still in the Plateau area. They are still looking for a spot.
Just putting it out there in case someone wants to go before they close.

Your input please for my upcoming trip to London!

I highly recommend The Ledbury. I went there for lunch on a Tuesday during a 3-day stay in London. I'd say go for it!:) The price for the quality (2 Michelin stars and 3 Rosettes) is excellent. I was impressed with the food and service.

French Onion Soup?

I've enjoyed the onion soup very much at Au Pied de Cochon.

You're welcome, here's the restaurant link:

Brunch - West End of Montreal for 80th birthday

I like Mon Village for brunch. It is buffet style though, if that's a consideration.

lunch places near Hotel Delta Centre-Ville

I work in that area. There's Le Beaver Hall on (where else?) Beaver Hall just above Viger. My personal fave restaurant at the moment is L'Arrivage, the 2nd floor restaurant at the Pointe-a-Calliere Museum. I take McGill, turn left at St. Paul, etc. The walk is worth it for the quality of food (lunch menus run from $11 to $20). You need reservations which can be made at (514) 872-9128.

Brunch at L'Arrivage - Pointe-a-Callieres

I had lunch there last week and it was great.

So what's in your tuna sandwich?

tuna, mayo, a teaspoon or two of small capers, chopped celery, chopped green onion and sometimes finely chopped red pepper

Los Clasicos: Authentic Mexican on St Laurent

News to all that are interested in chiles en nogada at Los Clasicos. I called Los Clasicos today and they said they will make chiles en nogada this coming Tuesday, 15 September, only. For dinner, not lunch.
I was there about 2 months ago and enjoyed the food veyr much, especially the flautas, rolled fried corn tortillas with a filling of either chicken or potatoes. I had chicken, but a Mexican friend of mine says flautas with potatoes are a great thing. Anyway, here are some photos, in order, they are flautas, enchiladas with salsa verde and the great salsas with tortilla chips.

Where did you eat this week ?

On Saturday I went to Lylas (on Jean Talon) for lunch, I usually have the pho, but this time the server recommended a new dish they've just added: it's called Banh Hoi Thit Nuong. I decided to go for it and it was delicious, I recommend it. It's grilled pork served over a bed of what the server said were homemade vermicelli (it looks like vermicelli that has been compressed somehow - it's good). They serve a light dressing on the side for you to pour over everything and enjoy. Enjoy I did! Lots of fresh mint and another delicious herb (tasted a bit like mint & cinnamon). Anyway, here's a photo.

Cuban coffee beans-has anyone seen any supply?

On St. Laurent blvd. I get Cuban coffee beans from Frenco, it's just below Duluth. They offer them in black roast only. They always seem to have a supply available there.

rhubard question

I have rhubarb in my garden & I find that some stalks have more red and some more green - both red and green parts are equally edible and delicious!

Tim Horton's free iced coffee today!

I happen to have a McD's across my office, they're having free iced coffee afternoon as well and I just had one. It's not sweetened and it's actually not bad. Seems to be just coffee, milk and ice. I agree the other one is way sweet.
