Kimchi in Metro Detroit?

I was at Hankuk the other day- the kimchee is a little sour, I may have bought an older jar. But it is made in house and still quite delicious. The restaurant is excellent.

Where to buy St. Hubert 'poutine sauce' in bulk

Hello,

I have heard that St.Hubert 'poutine sauce' is vegan and I'm trying to find somewhere to order this from in bulk (to ship to Alberta, or to buy out here). So far I can only find it available by the packet. I have heard that many restaurants in Quebec use this sauce and I am assuming that they don't all order it by the packet. Has anyone worked in a kitchen that gets this stuff and if so could you please help direct me me to the right place?

Thank you so much for your help.

Any time I've been there are sex and the city type young women hanging out enjoying themselves. It's kind of an interesting mix of being a little snooty and also kind of laid back.

Calgary Steakhouse recommendation?

ILGF- Caesar's is like an old uncle that maybe smells a little too musky. And that type of man will also likely be your waiter at Caesar's. But- there is something kind of great about it. In a city with a lot of faux glitzy shiny places, the throwback of Caesar's can be refreshing. I went to the original Morton's in Chicago. The sides there weren't great, neither were the drinks. That wasn't the point though. It was an old steak house. Caesar's is that. Many of the suggestions in this thread are for restaurants that happen to serve steak. Pretty much every restaurant/bar/pub in Calgary serves a steak. I think as long as there is a disclaimer that it's a little cheesy, and a throwback, Caesar's is a great choice for a character Calgary steakhouse. Anyways- looks like the Vintage recs won out. I'd say it's a bit more on the restaurant side, not so much a traditional steak house. But its good and definitely steak focused. For sides and things definitely better than Caesar's.

wildwood grill & brew pub

Staff say they are trying to open somewhere else but have no location. I head it was the Mercato people going in to that spot. Can that be true? Back 7 years ago I loved the pub, but it did go downhill with time.

In Calgary over the holidays. What's vegetarian friendly and worth eating?

Thank you John. What a resource!

NYE in Calgary

I bet Mango Shiva is doing something too. Lots of those nicer restaurants on 8th ave seem to be converting into clubs at night. I walked down 8th yesterday night and was surprised to see so many of the places open and full of people. It didn't seem like they were private functions either.

YYC - Low expectations, big surprises?

I had low expectations for Divino. I thought it would be overpriced and not very good, but although it was kind of expensive it was also really good. I had great service there too.

YYC - Low expectations, big surprises?

Wow! That is one heck of a website.

In Calgary over the holidays. What's vegetarian friendly and worth eating?

Mauro had veggie sandwiches when I last went to it, but if it's still open I think it would have had to move. I think that building kicked out all the shops. Maybe someone else can help out? Cafe Koi is good veggie friendly food. If you've got a bit of money to spend you could go to Catch- the chef there just won best chef in Canada, and previously won best dish in Alberta with a vegetarian dish. I bet they'll serve it to you- but call ahead to ask.

The elusive search for a great sandwich and soup restaurant (Calgary)

I had a great sandwich from Rustic Sourdough the other day. I'm not sure if they have soup.

Happy Hill

Late night Tah Lan sounds like a chowdown waiting to happen.

Looking for a great veggie burger downtown calgary

got it :) I wasn't sure how to let you know that this burger probably isn't for you without sounding negative (because it was a really nice meal). I agree with you that veggie burgers are often unidentifiable lumps of gross mush.

I went to Koi last night for their buddha burger.

They do italian sodas there now so I started with a pomegranate soda- it was great. It had whipped cream and a cherry on it which at first I didn't think I would like- but I did. It's a very nice room. Plants, good quiet music, nice design.

The buddha burger was delicious, but maybe more of a sandwich. It was served in a pita with pea shoots and roasted beets. The patty was a bit like falafel- there were some nuts in it for a bit of crunch. I had it with brie on it which melted into the patty nicely.

The sides were the best part. There was a small slaw which tasted like roasted sesame and an incredible cream of tomato soup.

If you are looking for a ketchup, mustard, pickle, kaiser bun kind of veggie burger Koi is too gourmet for you- but it's really good and reasonably priced for the quality.

I'll try to check out the coup veggie burger next.

The Boogies veggie burger wasn't soy when I had it- more vegetal matter. The meat burgers looked a lot better. I haven't had a really great veggie burger in town and as a vegetarian 29 days a month I hope this thread keeps going. I'll try Koi or the Coup soon and report back.

Happy Hill

We had a chowdown at Happy Hill today- 806 Centre St N. It was nice to have a big group of people so we could all try more things, and different people could help with the ordering. The food was pretty good- hsk pointed out that some of the fundamentals were off, but I think we all generally thought the food was pretty good. The roasted eggplant with shrimp paste was a hit- so were the pork and cilantro dumplings. The best part of the meal was probably the bill. We ordered a lot of food, a tonne of food really, and the bill came to $15 each including a very healthy tip.

best pizza in calgary?

I agree with this fownzy- please let us know what you think of Co-Op pizza. Pulcinella makes an effort but the crust is usually a little soggy for all the boasting about authentic Italian thin crust. Chowhound has a great video in obsessives with a pretty informed guy talking about pizza. Ah-Beetz in Abbotsford is an amazing pizza. Nothing in Calgary that I've had is close. I think if you've only ever eaten pizza in Calgary you might think that Earls has good pizza- but there is a whole other universe of pizza out there. Thin crust, a little burnt, minimal toppings, made by people who think pizza is one of the most important things on earth.

Kishu, Zocalo, Slickety Jim's and Lugz Coffee Lounge-all gone up in flames

Really sad news today...

SoHo Bar & Grill, Calgary

It's hard to say because different bars have different appeals for different people. I'd say just go check it out. It's just a bar so you don't really have make a huge commitment. SoHo has a sort of modern interior. It's a kind of neat space with different levels.

Anthony Bourdain

I'm going with a group of people too. Looking forward to it. Janice Beaton is hosting a meet and greet of some type- but it costs extra and I'm thinking might be kind of awkward so I'm not going to that.

Lethbridge, AB - any recs from AB foodies?

All the kids in Lethbridge love the Red Dog diner. It's a great Montreal style late night diner.

Beltline area Calgary

We'll have to duke it out. I love the dishes, wine list and service at Thai Sa-On. Plus they make some very good spicy dishes if you ask nicely for extreme heat. Either way it's nice to have two pretty good Thai options in the Beltline.

Beltline area Calgary

For Thai in the beltline I really like Thai Sa-On on 10th Ave, and Chili Club on 11th is pretty good too. Thai Sa-On gets talked about on this board a fair bit- here is one thread: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/646475

BEST Pho Satay In Calgary?

Pho Pasture and CoDo satisfy me.

Avocado 17 Ave SW, Calgary

Ha ha. Yes, it was probably Pil John. It's the 'hipster' beer of Calgary. And yes, PBR is the Vancouver choice. I wish the kids would try some Wildrose though. Luckily Steamwhistle seems to catch on. Steamwhistle is not a bad pilsner...

vegan & vegetarian friendly ladies lunch YYC

Koi rebranded I think- I haven't been but I bet a lot of posters have. It was, and I'm pretty still will be a good alternative to the Coup. Do a search for Koi on the board maybe.

Girls Night Calgary - ASAP

Brava is a fine choice for a not 'weird' ladies night. That said- get those ladies out to some Indian restaurants (at least)!

Avocado 17 Ave SW, Calgary

The Point had some pretty good managers, even though it was a dive. One of the best ones (Sarmad) is now working at the HiFi and doing great things there. It was Norms before the Point. I'm very happy to hear that this prime spot on 17th might get some life to it after a far too long dead period. I'll check it out! Thanks for the heads up- looks like they have a couple good veggie options on the menu too. Also- I'm pretty sure there were never any overpriced PBRs at the Point. Just cheep terrible draught and a lot of VLTs (and VLT 'clients').

Olives stuffed with Anchovies - Calgary

I don't know for sure if they have them, but you could call Kalamata Grocery and ask. (403) 244-0220
