Beagles, and BBQ, and Bears! Oh my!

I’m really not going to talk about Beagles or Bears, but BBQ is on the menu. Its been awhile since my spell check has gone on the fritz, and I thought readers would get a kick out of the reference to the last spell-meggedon, where I wrote about the joy of eating Beagles. Anyway, I haven’t posted for awhile so I thought it might be time to mention a couple local events/restaurants/markets I’ve enjoyed.

1) Tabora Farms Lansdale
209 West Main Street
Lansdale, PA 19446
http://www.taborafarmandorchard.com/store/

This place is just awesome. I recommend the Steuben Wine, the Pepper and Mozzarella roll, and the Green Chai Iced Latte. Tabora Farms Lansdale has a nice, relaxing, atmosphere. This is the perfect place to sit, drink some coffee, and watch the main street while listening to the eclectic jazzy mix of music that just permeates this cafe/farmers-market/winery/spice-shop/bakery.

2) Jesse’s Barbecue & Local Market
98 North County Line Road
Souderton, PA 18964
http://www.jessesbarbecue.com/

Finally Souderton is getting a BBQ place. To be fair Jesse’s isn’t open yet. However, Jesse’s had a real presence at Indian Valley Public Library’s Brews for Books. If the food they served is any indication Jesse’s may just rival such Lansdale heavyweights as Uncle Greg’s or even eventually Smoke Daddy’s. The pulled park was cooked just right, tender with a hint of the smoky goodness that makes BBQ oh so good. The spicy sauce was just amazing and gone within the first hour. The mustard sauce was tangy but not overpowered. There was a mild sauce and vinegar sauce as well. I can not wait ‘til the opening to see what the brisket will be like. This place will only get better with age and experience. So I think there is some real potential for BBQ greatness.

3) Indian Valley Public Library’s Brews for Books
100 E Church Ave, Telford, PA 18969
http://ivpl.org
http://www.brewsforbooks.org/

IVPL’s Beer-fest and Wine Tasting are two of the highlights of my year. This year’s theme for the Beer-fest was West Meets Local. This is a chance to give money to a great cause, IVPL, while sampling some of the local breweries’ and home-brews’ best. Even with the rain, this year’s festivities were great fun. I am also looking forward to IVPL’s Wine Tasting, which is scheduled for December 10.

Top 10 Eatery Experiences in the Last Few Years

Ok, I've been super negligent in posting. Soooo...here's my top 10 since my last post.

1) Cross Culture---Doylestown

I usually go here once a year, on New Years, with givemecarbs. We usually share a bottle of fine wine (Cross Culture is a BYOB) and we always have a ball. The rest of the year I spend dreaming of the pleasantly rich Lamb Korma and Naan and comparing every other restaurant I walk into to. Its unfair, I know. Its one night with good food, good drink, and good friends, where cost is just a number and I'm left in a dizzy haze of happiness. I'm sure they must have down days, but not wile I've been. The cost is high, but it seams comparable to other local Indian restaurants. I have never left hungry, which I cannot say of many similarly priced restaurants.

2) Saffron----Ambler

This is where I spent part of hurricane Irene. The wait staff was patient with me, that means a lot considering I was in rare form. I called five or six times, my reservation changed from six people to two, the time changed over an hour last minute, and I had to disappear for a moment while they were serving me. The rice was the best I've remembered. I got Lamb Korma again. I have this thing for Lamb and Indian food. Givemecarbs got Lamb Kebab. She got the better dish, I got the better rice. Win for me.

3) Alice Bakery----North Wales

I'm a sucker for a good croissant.I'm a sucker for exquisite tea. I'm also a sucker for godly chocolate. Here I can, and did, get all three. By the end givemecarbs had to drag me from this bakery. The tea infused chocolates may seem pricey, but oh-my-god they are worth it.

4) Let Them Eat Cake---Doylestown

I'm not one for Cupcakes...usually. This bakery is making me take another look at all a cupcake can be. I tried the Red Velvet and I swear my knees gave a little. I can't wait to go back and try more of the dessert I once swore off.

5) Letterman's---Kutztown
This is the only real place worth checking out in Kutztown. If you like breakfast you will love this place. Warning: the portions are enough to feed a hungry college student for a day, aproach with extreme caution. Having said that, best...breakfast...ever.

6) A & N Dinner---Sellersville
Not much to say here, except where else can you get breakfast 24 hours in the Sellersville area. Add a great Greek wrap. Finally, top off with godly apple dumplings just as good as my grandmother use to make. Yum.

Well that wasn't quite 10, but now I'm hungry. I promise to be more prompt in the future.

Uncle Greg's Smokin BBQ in Lansdale on a Friday Night

Ate on Friday a Sliced Beef Brisket sandwich from Uncle Greg's Smokin BBQ on Main Street Lansdale. No joke, the brisket made my knees melt. Also, got a lemonade which was perfect. The staff was friendly and personable. Went with some of the best of friends. In all, it was just a great experience. I highly recommend this place.

What are the College apartment cookware needs?

I'm going back to college and I got an apartment on campus. both me and my roommates are like 'how do we stock the kitchen.' I'm probably going to use it the most. The big essential I came up with is a knife and a cutting board, but even with that I really don't know all that much about cooking cutlery. Can anyone educate me and if you where in my shoes what would you get?

Perkasie Pizza & Pasta (AKA IL Colosseo)

I like Perkasie Pizza. I had the best veal Capri there today. It was in this rich bed of angel hair pasta. The sauce was a velvety garlic almost rose. I think for the price its hard to beat. The servers and environment where excellent. The portions were so generous that I was the only one who could finish. I've tried two of the desserts now. The bread pudding is the best I've had, and the tiramisu made my knees buckle.

This is the best Italian I've ever had. John the owner always puts out excellent food. The menu is varied and the prices are very reasonable. The service is personable and quick. I've never heard any complaints. This is one of the jewels of Perkasie. Oh, the garlic knots are to die for.

Ariana's in North Wales

Ok, givemecarbs is holding my email responses hostage for a review. I first entered Adriana's thinking it would just be cheep Italian fast food. Something about that Wawa shopping center keeps throwing me off. All the restaurants from the outside look like they should be fast food or something, but all of them have spectacular food and good service. It took my fist look at the menu for me to realize that the food was not going to be cheep. I ordered the crab cake appetizer special, thinking it would be two miniature crab cakes, and the eggplant parmigiana. The crab cakes came out first. They were huge. I thought at first they made a mistake and gave me a extra entree. I took a bite and my knees gave out. It was in this rich alfrado like wine sauce. It brought a tear to my eye. The cake itself was the perfect blend of crab meat and spice. There was very little breading, but the crab wasn't overpowering. It was the perfect dish. Next was the eggplant parmigiana. They used a whole eggplant, I'm sure. It was so much food. And we had mead. It was such like a midevil feast.

International Christmas Cookie Conundrum

Ok so I'm invited next year to my cousin's christmas cookie cooking party. I'm instructed this year to find the best ginger cookie recipie I can find. I'm looking for a soft dense cookie. I love molasses cookies and I thought that would be a great feel for it. I've never baked so thats why I come to chowhound for help.

On another note. My cousin is married to a Pakistani man, and this is truely an international event. I was wundering if anyone had like a pakistani cookie recipe.

Phoenixville

Iwas just there tonight. Food was good and the sevice was good. I should rephrase that the food was exeptional and the sevice was grand. The live music (happend every first sunday of the month) was just an added bonus. I'm a bit of a musician in my free time and the group was one of the best I've heard. The leader did her rounds during one of the breaks and gave me her card. www.kaneandbeatty.com is her website. Anyway, good food, good drink, great atmasphere, and a smashing good band. Oh I've been to Ireland before and this was just like.

Cross Culture @ Doylestown

This ranks as one of the most elegant dinning experiances of my life. I let givemecarbs drive me to a random place for dinner on New Years. For the record I'm gay and givemecarbs is a she. It was a dinning of two longterm freinds. I was entranced by the music, te paintings, the perfict lighting, the professional waiting staff. We got there at a perfict time for not having reservatons. I was amazed that they sat us. We had a white wine Tres de something...wine is not my speialty. anyway, the wine was excalent. Even though I had Lmb with it...ahhhh its the food police. I have this thing for lamb. Its always been a very personal dish for me because its the one dish growing up I could only ever have wile my mother was away. The love of it was always something Dad and I shared. Indian food brings back a memory of me and dad eating at casablanca on a very rare father son bonding kawanis adventure (thanks Iris). Anyway the Lamb Korma was suparb. I could just live on that alone. I didn't want my meal ever to end. Givemecarbs had biryamis and hopefully she'll post on that, but I had a taste and that made all the dirrerance. anyway heres a link. http://www.crosscultureindiancuisine....

Tex Mex @ North Wales

I went to the tex mex for my Aunt's 70th birthday. Somehow we got one of the upper rooms. It was intimate and nice. They couldnt seat us all at one table, but the room was small enough that we could all talk and be heard. The watress was rather perfect. She knew when each person needed a drink almost instinctively without being overbaring. The only downside I thought to being Tex Mex'ed, at first, was that they limit mageritas to three per customer. That was what I thought was the downside until, of course, I tasted my first beverage of the night. Thouse drinks could kill....in a good way. They were perfictly mixed. One simply must tast the mango frozen margerita. For the record I am still buzzed. The auderves the angels on hoseback where my faverate. There Shrimp...yes shrimp...wrapped in bacon. You know the saing everything is better with bacon. Well shrimp is no exception. My cousin has eaten there befor so I followed his recomindations. Next was the house ceaser. Its spicy wich took some getting used too. It was good though. For the entree we had the Crab barritos. Yes I know it sounds gross. try them. I promise you'll like them. Finall we finished with carmel chesscake flan. It was too rich for me...yes, me to eat. out of 10 I rate this a solid 7.

begal eating in philly contest

sorry, I was really drunk when writing these posts and I was using a search engine as a online dictionary. Of course I ment bagels, not beagels. And wile I would be amused at a beagle eating contest, I think the furry yappyness of it all would just be too much for me. Any more conducive answers to the question stated would be much appreciated.

Finally for the spelling dictators of the world, a little fun.

"Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?"

Tygers are yummy.

Just try finding a spelling mistake.

feng shui philly

On our way back from a big event in philly. L and I were fealling a little tipsy. I thought food was in order and well a we definitly needed to make a stop. We searched and randomly found this chinesse bar/ restraunt called the feng shui. We walled down a flight of stairs and were transfered to this very quiet intamate space. We were tipsy and the staff seamed to roll with our rather unusuall request that we eat at the bar and order no drinks. The bartender was frendly and really made the restraunt. I'm still kind of awled by the stetting. The food was tuelly the best chineese I've ever had. I had general tao's chicken. It was perfictly fried and sesoned. There was a little heat to it and the meat was lean. It ruined me for the whole second class tzo's chicken, it was so good. :sniffle: L had shrimp in a cream sause over lettice and asperagas. Hers was delectible. I kinda stole a few tasts. We got a large jar of rice with our meal. The one complant I had was i wished they gave us chopsticks, just because I wanted to savor every bite. We did eventually order drinks after the tea sobered us up a bit. The bartender has this specialty, I cant think of the name now, that I could live with out drinking anthing else. anyway the adress is 727 Walnut St.

Woodys

Ok, a frind and I went to outfest philly this year. I had heard good things about Woodys (the local gay bar) and I wanted to try it out. I kinda trusted my freinds opinion and im glad i did. She had the shrimp bisque and a martinie. I followed suite. Now normally I never order shrimp. Im usually super sensitive to the fishyness of it if its like even a little old. This though was perfection. It was a little spicy but it braought out the delicate nature of the shrimp insted of overpowering it. The margeretias were deadly but perfictly mixed...heh i think i still have a buzz. We had to search a little for setting but the bothes are private and service was ok. I give it a 9 stars.

Getting your Tomato On

Ok every once in a wile I get these cravings. Usually it’s for chocolate or random fruit or cool foods. Lately I’ve had cravings for tomatoes. I didn’t even know about the whole tomato crisis thing until that fateful day I walked into a Wawa searching for an Italian hoagie with tomatoes. Now generally I don’t eat Wawa sandwiches. I was desperate. I fuddled with that stupid touch screen and made the realization after 10 min of touch screen hell that they weren’t serving tomatoes. I cried a little inside as I settled for a cheese steak with peppers. For dinner I tried Pudges. I like Pudges they serve by far the best hoagies and cheese steaks in the area. Cry, there was a sign up announcing their shame…no tomatoes. I was beginning to wonder where had all the tomatoes gone. All day I had searched for one little tomato to quench my thirst and that one elusive tomato was not to be found. I felt like on of those croc type hunters on those god awlful nature shows. I was lost until I was found by the A&N. There I could view and even…gasp…eat tomatoes in their natural habitat in a rich bed of cheese, egg, and onion (ok I forgot the onion, but it would have been godly with the onion). The waitress looked a little perplexed when I walked in and promptly asked do you have tomatoes. I practically hugged her when she answered yes. I miss easy to find tomatoes and I think people and companies are being stupid for not serving them. I mean let’s get some facts out. Locally grown tomatoes, not going to kill you. Cherry tomatoes; grape tomatoes; tomatoes sold with the vine still attached; tomatoes grown at home seem to be safe. As of yet they think the contaminated tomatoes are coming from Mexico or possibly one of the few counties not cleared in Florida. That leaves a lot of safe tomatoes to choose from. In addition it only seems to be raw tomatoes that have cause problems.
I just want my tomatoes.
