A Seabra Foods in Springfield?

Grand opening Thursday Sept 10th 2011.

What areYour Non-Asian Cooking Uses for Soy Sauce/Tamari?

Found it at Whole Foods when I was there but ShopRite also has it.

Best Indian in Union County These Days?

I enjoy the lunch buffet at the Red Pepper on Route 22 Eastbound across from Bowcraft and Senkalp (recently opened) on Oak Tree Avenue, (not Road) & Park Avenue in South Plainfield in the Golden Shopping Center. Ditto on Saffron.

Stirling Hotel-Sterling

Sterling Hotel is one of my favorite places to visit again and again. They make their own veggie burgers for those who don't eat meat (their bluecheese & bacon burger is delicious). The veggie burgers are lentil, white bean, and two types of black bean. The sweet potato fries are fresh. The dinner entrees look good passing by but I stick to the above because they are good. Yes, the regular burgers are smaller than the rolls but the rolls are very large Kaiser rolls.

Langosta Lounge, Asbury Park

Everything coming by looked good, mostly salads, but I wanted the lobster roll; out but they did have the lobster macaroni and cheese so I went for it despite the waitress' lukewarm expression when I asked how it was. The appetizer portion is small but adequate as I had expected but it was dried out Kraft type, small noodles, same sauce and with shredded (packaged maybe) lobster and not much of it. My friends burrito was very good. Wrong choice and I'll try again. Good service and constant refilling of water on a hot day.

Any Good Japanese Restaurants in Union County, NJ?

There are many Japanese restaurants here; so many recently opening that I haven't yet tried. Lately I go to Go Sushi on Rt 22East in Scotch Plains, across from Bowcraft/ Also good is Fujiyamama on South Ave in Westfield.

Cafe for desserts in Union County, NJ?

Right off South Ave is small and charming. They serve a large variety of sweet & savory crepes as well as other desserts, salads & sandwiches, coffees & teas. Always a good experience.

Where to buy mochi

I get mochi at the Asian Market on Route 22W in Green Brook NJ. They have plain assorted mochi in packages and mochi w/ice cream in the freeze section. I'm assuming that all asian markets carry it. Trader Joe's does have mochi w/ice cream.

Where should I store oatmeal? Location, not type of container.

They are unprocessed oats, a larger amount than I usually get so I would be keeping them a long time. So far, a pound or two has been fine in an original Quaker cylinder.

Where should I store oatmeal? Location, not type of container.

Correction: I meant the rice kernals stay separate, don't freeze together.

Where should I store oatmeal? Location, not type of container.

I'll be getting 5 pounds of oatmeal from my co-op. I put rice in the freeze successfully, it doens't separate. Can I put oatmeal in too? I eat it slowly and this may be 6 months supply and I don't want bugs. Thanks.

Chez Catherine, Westfield NJ

We decided to try Chez Catherine during Westfield’s restaurant week, neither of us having been there for quite some time. During these two weeks most of the restaurants in town are offering a $15 two course lunch, a good way to try a new or revisited restaurant.

When we arrived at 1:30 the owner or maitre’d, Mr. Juvenair (sp?) said that he would set up our table, we asked for the empty table near the window which he said we could have once we set it up. After being seated for 15 minutes no water was poured nor were we asked if we wanted drinks. The maitre’d and the lone waiter served 18 people total at four other tables, When Mr. J. did come by, I asked testily for water and he said, “if you are in a hurry, this is not the place to have lunch.” We weren’t in a hurry but did expect to be acknowledged. The
place is very small. When my friend asked what kind of fish was the entrée choice, he said, “I told you before”…. and then described the salmon. The roasted red pepper soup was adequate; the salmon with lemon sauce, four pieces of green beans and small mound of mashed potatoes were well prepared. The bread was warm and fresh. The water was never refilled.

My understanding is that this type of promotion is to have people to try the restaurants in town and bring in some additional business. If pleased, customers will return for dinner. No restaurant is required to participate. The snooty and indifferent service at Chez Catherine was insulting.

We should have left but my friend was not able to walk far and we were settled in. I won’t return.

New Restaurant Fusion 22 French Asian

Recently had the (M-F) $9.99 buffet lunch and it was wonderful. The owners are gracious and welcoming and the staff accomodating and well trained. They brought items from the buffet to the table and water was constantly filled (a pet peeve of mine if not done). The soup was cauliflower and the salad cut up vegetables with two sauces. There were two chicken dishes, (one green curry), a breaded fish in a dark tamarind sauce, Vegetable Mancurian, delicous vegetable meat balls, dry spiced potatoes, jasmine rice, lo mein (well-done, not typical Cantonese variety, vegetable fried rice. Half of the selections were vegetarian, which the owners say they try to do. The desserts were coconut creme brulee cakes and mango custard squares. Some of the buffet items are not on the lunch or dinner menu so I expect the selection will vary. The decor is lovely. I plan to return for dinner; want to try the lobster, duck and stuffed tofu dishes. The website is fusionon22.com

Good restaurantes in Rahway/Carteret/Port Reading Area??

Ditto, David Drake. Romantic, wonderful cuisine.

A little lower end, Flynn's Tavern for Irish, around the corner or for an after dinner drink.

Gas Light Brewery-So. Orange NJ

Haven't been in awhile. Love the extensive menu, which also means some things are good, others not. It is reasonable, good and in an interesting area. Also like Harrar (Ethiopian) around the corner and Eden Garden market with a cafe.

Persian in Summit, NJ

Was there last night for the second time. The bread was served only with an appetizer but was stale, packaged pita. My vegetarian friend has a three appetizer plate which was very good. Our dishes had a large portion of rice, and a little meat (lamb shank, chicken or salmon). The spinach rice and orange rice was delicious but most dishes come with white rice. The service is good and the decor attractive. The menu should be tweaked a little to allow different combinations. It was good but similar food (Afghan) can be found at Silk Road in Warren, which has wonderful homemade warm Afghan bread, vegetarian entrees and a choice of rice.

Iceland question - one night out

We had puffin in a restaurant near the volcano museum because it isn't available elsewhere. The museum may be closed if a volcano erupts. All the sushi and seafood is good there.

Visiting San Diego, need some recs

We just got back from a business and pleasure trip to San Diego. We like ethnic food and enjoyed Aladdin Hillcrest (met a Lebanese man on the plane who recommended it), for Korean BBQ, wonderful with about 12 sides sides, Buga is the best, rain caused us to go to PF Chang's for the first time and although a chain, a very good experience with surprisingly good food. The Fish House on Harbor Drive had a great view but was disappointing. I think that just walking around I could find many many good places in San Diego. Too much food, not enough time!!

Paterson Saturday Food Sale

Sorry, it's in Paterson in a church near or on Broadway.

Fairlawn NJ Saturday Food Sale

Several people have mentioned that a church in Fairlawn NJ(or thereabouts) has a great sale of packaged foods, some interesting stuff, on Saturday. Never got the name or address. Going up that way this weekend. Anyone have this inf?. Thanx.

Impressions of Cafe Monet in Millburn, NJ?

Was there tonight and sat outside on a beautiful cool summer evening. Saw the old posts and wanted to say that the service was exceptional; attentive, knowledgeable and helpful and the restaurant was packed inside and outside. A weekend evening is revealing. My pet peeve is having my water refilled and it was filled consistently. We share boulillbase (sp) (1 shrimp, 1 scallop, a few pieces of fish, exquisite taste , scallops (3 medium sized) w/mushroom risotto and short ribs w/mashed garlic potatoes, all very good. Small dishes even the large one. The husband needed an additional treat at the nearby Whole Foods. I want to go back and try a few more of the dishes.

Best Gazpacho Recipe

I used to make a speedy gazpacho when I came home for a short lunch. Put tomatoes, onion, hot pepper, green pepper, cilantro and water in a blender for a short time on chop. You can add yogurt if you like it creamy.

Paloma Philadelphia

Finally made it from Central Jersey for a promised meal at Paloma and it was well worth the trip. With the Jersey humidity subsiding for a few days, we three arrived still cool for our 6 pm reservation. We shared a wild mushroom flan and beef tenderloin dumplings seasoned w/Asian and Mexican spices followed by entrees of Duck Paloma, stuffed duck slices w/mamey & morita chiles, Crab Cake Purses w/crispy carrots and squash w/a carrot curry sauce, and Escolar Al Pipian. The French/Mexican inspired dishes are unusual and the seasonings subtle; unlike anything that you might expect. All were almost eclipsed by the home-made, original and unique sorbets-I'm still yearning for the mango habanero and mole najaranja and am preparing a cooler so my cravings can be satisfied for more than one meal when I return again. The service is flawless and friendly in a warm and intimate space on 6515 Castor Ave.

Asheville's Best Restaurants

Was recently in Asheville for the first time and found too many great restaurants (and I'm from NY!) to have time for. Enjoyed Tupelo Honey, Zambra's (tapas and unique sangria, desserts) , Laughing Seed, 12 Bones and Rosetta (veg). Also recommended by others were Table and Salsa. Early Girl's menu looked interesting.

Asheville, NC - Restaurants that host private parties/events?

Realize might be too late as misread the date but this may be helpful for others. Just went to a wedding at Claxton Farms in Weaverville; both indoors and out, bar, beautiful settings, outdoor dance floor; great food, perfect place. Pre-wedding party was at 12 Bones in Asheville; does only private parties at night; also was indoors and out.
