Re: Zong zi
Have you tried the one from Four Sea Restaurant?
Which Zong zi do you mean as "the best out there"?
Looking for Pork Belly (on the Eastside)
Any Asian supermarket should carry pork belly in their meat section. Most, if not all, are located west of the I-15, however.
Recent dinner at Raku - food as good as usual, but I'm not sure about the service...
Nice, Dave. Thanks for the heads up.
It's a little farther of a drive but worth a try.
Recent dinner at Raku - food as good as usual, but I'm not sure about the service...
Rightly so, Raku has become too popular. I am having a hard time getting a table at my preferred time now versus, say, a year or two ago. Some kind of competition off strip would be healthy. It will benefit all of us.
Spanish Chorizo substitute for Paella
Kielbasa works for me and is available in most supermarkets.
Reservations possible for dim sum on Jan 28 in downtown LA?
Last year, I made the mistake of driving to Chinatown on the day of the Parade. Took me 2 hours just to maneuver within to find a parking spot. Finally gave up and turned back. Perhaps, taking public transport will be more workable this particular day.
Best Deal on a Whole Roast Pig?
You have two different types of roast pigs in Eva's (Filipino) and CBS(Cantonese). Personally, I prefer the Filipino lechon with its smooth glasslike crunchy skin. That said, the bottom line is ..... as long as everyone's happy and satisfied, it doesn't matter which pig you buy.
Manhattan Beach Recommendations
Second North End Cafe for their Monte Cristo Egg Roll.
Non-spicy chinese rec in SGV
How about Newport Seafood for whole Lobster, beef loc lac and hot sour soup.
Canton Restaurant – Delicious Cantonese Fish Congee (Porridge) and Cha Ca Thang Long (Vietnamese Turmeric Fish with Dill) in Little Saigon
Thanks for the heads up, Lau. Fish congee with You Tiao and perhaps a raw egg makes my day.
Even if Westminster is not in my neck of the woods, have noted it down for a future OC visit.
Best Chinese Restaurant on the Strip?
I am a sucker for wonton soup with or without noodles, depending on my mood.
I feel Noodles Asia's wontons are a bit mild. so I add their chili sauce for that extra kick and saltiness.
Best Chinese Restaurant on the Strip?
If you are refering to Noodles Asia at the Venetian, then I second that. I make an effort to dine here whenever I do not feel like driving to Chinatown
I won't even return to Zine at the Palazzo cuz food is too ordinary for its price.
Cheap eats for foodies?
Any employee inside the Cosmo would know.
This link should make it easier for you to find the place.

Chinese Turkey Meal/Package to go
I remember the turkey I bought from the deli of 99 ranch in 2009.
It was cooked like the roast duck you find hanging in the togo section of Sam Woos and others.
The stuffing was chinese sticky rice. It was quite an impressive bird and flavorful.

No Dim Sum West Of The 405?
A & W in Reseda, not the one near Sherman Way, serves Dim Sum in the morning.
It is still west of the 405.
Pumpkin Bread
It's that time of the year when all the pumpkins are gone from sight and everyone is looking forward to a season of eating, reunions and holidays. It signals The Monastery of the Angels to start baking their famous pumpkin bread.
I finally got to try it for the first time.
It is a regular loaf sized bread weighing one pound topped with walnuts.
Sweet but not too sweet and with just enough hint of pumpkin and spices to make it a very filling treat.
Sister Mary assured me that I will be coming back for more. And after the first two slices over a cup of freshly brewed coffee, I certainly will be returning and part with my $10 for some heavenly treat.
Will probably earn me some brownie points upstairs, too, I hope.

Kettle Corn/San Fernando Valley
I also like the Kettle corn at Northridge Farmers Market. The line can get pretty long and will take at least 20 minutes if you do not get there early enough. However, you have to wait for "spring forward" next year for their Kettle Corn since this particular FM ended with "Fall Back". If I am not mistaken, they operate out of San Bernardino and have been a regular in Northridge for many years.
Best place you ate at this week?
Had an impressive lunch at Musso and Frank Grill in Hollywood. Ordered their Tues. special of Corned beef and cabbage. Mrs. had Sand Dabs. Never had corned beef that was so tender and easy to cut with just a fork. Don't really need a knife. The Sand Dab was also excellent with a touch of lemon. However, those large cut french fries that come with the fried fish was just too much.
Lotus of Siam - favorite dishes
If these are the crispy fried chicken wings, then I second them!
Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 4th quarter 2011 [OLD]
Nay and a BIG NAY on the Beef Pho Soup. Totally tasteless.
Perhaps instead of adding water, add chicken stock or beef stock and salt plus a squeeze of lime.

You may want to check out Island Pacific at the corner of DeSoto and Roscoe or Seafood City

Help me!! SOS! Hot and Sour Soup
I like to add my vinegar, most of it if not all of it, at the end of the cooking process to achieve the sourness that I like. I really like my H&S soup sour. I've used distilled vinegar as well as black vinegar. Any vinegar, as long as you like its taste, should be OK.
