I call BS on Centovini's [moved from Manhattan board]

I need your opinion. On March 20th, I went to Centovini's on West Houston with my boyfriend at 6:30 for a pre show meal. First off, we were the only ones in the dining room and my story may explain why.

The BF and I aren't wine connoisseurs but we almost always order a fine bottle at dinner so we've come to know quite a bit. We ordered a bottle of Rosso Conero Riserva Rubelliano 2003 Enzo Mecella. It was 60 bucks, fine. The waiter took the bottle off the wine shelf and showed us the bottle. He walked away. Minutes later he came back with the empty bottle and the wine decanted. The BF and i were perplexed. We tasted it.. but was it really the bottle we ordered? How did we know he didn't switch the wine with something behind the bar. We contemplated talking to management but finally called the waiter back over and asked him if it was "house policy" to decant the wine away from the customers. His response was that it was totally normal "some restaurants open the bottle in front of the customer - others don't. I didnt' want it to spill in front of you".

Do you call bullsh!t? I do. Is this something you've experienced anywhere else? This wasn't a cheap dinner and i really expect decent service. This just blew my mind. Please tell me if I was overreacting. Oh and btw, we're never going back to Centovini's.

East Village brunch

To avoid a ridiculous wait go early. Get there when brunch starts - typically 11am. I've heard Belcourt Cafe is great but I went at 1:30pm and there was an hour wait (forget it). If you want to go a little lower - I suggest Inoteca in the LES. Great brunch spot and fabulous wine list (added bonus).

Your favorite underrated burger?

i have to agree with you on Houston's burger. They slather it in mustard, bbq sauce, cole slaw, cheddar.. the works. I know it's a chain but they do this oh so well.

Craftbar- what to order?

I was there on Monday evening. A few friends and I had drinks at the bar and then sat down for dinner. The service was great. We enjoyed the Pecorino Stuffed Risotto Balls and Pecorino Fondue ( I know a little heavy on the pecorino) but the fondue was extremely tasty. I had the House-made Cavatelli Bolognese which was very heavy but excellent. It was not very oily - which i would expect from a meat sauce. Very well done.

Pizza recommendation at 39th near 2nd Ave.

Their large cheese pizza is $17.50 which is a tad ridiculous. It's good. Nothing to rave about.

Best Weekend Brunch Place in Murray Hill

I live in Murray Hill and I'm looking for a great (not good) weekend brunch place in the area. I'm not sure if this is even possible - but I'm hoping so because it's getting cold. I rarely go to Penelope's because it's insanely crowded. Any other suggestions? Much appreciated!

Sorry about the post. I see an older one here on the same subject: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/475572

Best sushi to dine out in Murray Hill

People have been raving about Amber since it opened this year. 3rd Ave btwn 27th and 28th. I've been there once. During the summer it was nice to eat near the french doors in front. The sushi was fresh. Nothing extraordinary but very good. Later in the evenings the music can get a bit loud - if that turns you off.

Any Suggestions for 15-20 Person Group Dinner for under $40 / person

I almost had a large party at Sala 19 in Gramercy. For that size group it's 30 or 40 per person ( I can't remember off the top of my head). The downside is that you have to eat family style from pre chosen items on the menu. I wanted my guests to be able to choose their meal but if this is what you're looking for - i've heard it's great. I've eaten there a few times - food is tasty, bar and restaurant are always full and the staff is friendly.

When's the last time anyone ate at Sarge's?

always order delivery if you are so inclined to eat something from their establishment. i've eaten there once. ditsy, loud waitresses seem to have issues with serving beverages. there's no way i'm going back for a sit down meal. this also compelled me to cut down on deliver orders. not sure i want to patronize this place.

Most Unhealty Meal in NYC

Ted's Montana Grill. Have you seen that friggin menu? Order any burger fully loaded with a side of fries and onion rings. Their salt/pepper onion rings are about 200 cals each.

Also, you could then take him to the east village for sarita's mac and cheese. get the large cheeseburger variety. Score.

Lunch - Battery Park, Pastrami Midtown Please Help

Bring Mom and Teen to the Seaport. Eat at Nelson Blue, Cabana, or Salud.

If you can't go to Katz, then Midtown is much farther uptown than that my friend. If around the 30's go to 2nd Ave Deli or Sarg's for a good pastrami sandwich.

Murray Hill Restaurant Suggestions - GOOD ONES

Hi Liz,

How would you rate their sushi? I've been on the hunt for good sushi in Murray Hill. On the border I found Amber on 3rd Ave btwn 27th and 28th. The fish was fresh. The pieces of sashimi were HUGE -I'm talking 3 or 4 bites worth. It just threw me off. :)

Murray Hill Restaurant Suggestions - GOOD ONES

Really? Good to know. I was planning on asking some co-workers to join me at the John St location for breakfast (I work nearby). Should I not bother? I'm glad to hear you had a good experience at the Park Ave location. Maybe I'll give them another try.

Murray Hill Restaurant Suggestions - GOOD ONES

Agreed! Bar Milano was a good experience. It seems to have received quite a few poor reviews but I loved it. The mixed drinks were also a fun treat. Their mixologist makes very cool concoctions. Loved the "Veneto".

Murray Hill Restaurant Suggestions - GOOD ONES

As i mentioned I do love French but I had a bad experience at Les Halles (Park Ave location). It was unfortunate because the food was wonderful but the service was horrendous! I went on a Wednesday night, it wasn't packed, but it took over 20 minutes for someone to get us water and then another 10 to take our drink order. I probably would have left if i had not heard great things about the cuisine. I'm sorry to say I won't be back anytime soon but I may be tempted to try them out for breakfast - at the John Street location.

Murray Hill Restaurant Suggestions - GOOD ONES

I can't tell you how many times I walk past these spots. Thank you! I'm a big French fan so I can't wait to try out Cosette. My boyfriend is not a big Greek food fan but I will definitely try out Ethos with a friend. As far as Steakhouses go, do you prefer Wolfgang's over Primehouse? They're so close I'd like to try the superior one.

Murray Hill Restaurant Suggestions - GOOD ONES

I live in Murray Hill and I tend to eat out everywhere else in this city. This area has a reputation for bad or mediocre restaurants. Has anyone found restaurants in this area that they just love? I have one Italian spot that I frequent - Trattoria Alba. The decor is a little cheesy but the service is great and the food is consistently good. Please share your Murray Hill food finds with me. I'd like to explore my neighborhood a little more. Much appreciated!!

Last minute restaurant spots in LES?

Inoteca. They don't take reservations but you can sit, chat and nibble at the bar while you wait for a table. Great wine and food. Menu is in Italian but the waiter explains everything.

If you enjoy French, Cafe Charbon is another one of my favorites in the LES.

Good luck.

Benoit- go or no??

Cheers RGR! I agree. It was as if Platt was having a grand ol time destroying Benoit's chance here in NYC. He probably had a ball going there knowing he and his entourage hate French bistro cuisine. The article was quite funny. I did agree with a few of his points. The interior's a bit cheesy etc. But it is worth a try.

Good Restaurant on UWS 70's-80's for 20 ppl?

Cafe Luxembourg on 70th and Amsterdam could accommidate 20 or so people but call at least 2 weeks ahead. It has a nice ambiance and caters to many tastes: http://www.cafeluxembourg.com/

Bouley/Cafe des artistes/Craft/EMP/L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon

Craft is a bit pricey but the food (at least from my experience) has been impeccable. The interior is funky/modern/chic. Lots of eye candy in terms of interior design. It would make for a wonderful birthday meal. Make sure to let the hostess/host know it's his birthday.

Great Sushi in NYC

Some people may disagree but I've been going to Poke on East 85th (between 1st and 2nd) for about 4 years now. Their sushi is extremely fresh and their special roles are amazing on the palette. It's also BYOB! Beware they're cash only but this will cost you much less than Nobu...
