SD: sandwiches

Funny. Tonight Mom and I got pretty snotty service from a waitess at C-Level. I love it. A server is going to give me attitude. Whatever.

As for "Cheese Shop", it was definitely subpar. I do like EZJ's in PB, and random deli shops across SD county. I come from the Phx area, which ostensibly lacks in good sandwiches.

Will I go back to "Cheese"? Nah. Not worth the money, the parking nausea, or having to put up with the annoying crowds. Man when did I become the grouchy local?

I ended up taking Mom to The Cheese Shop in LJ.

Wow does that place get busy! Surprisingly so, considering it was a Wednesday at 1:30. Never underestimate summer tourist season at the beach.

The lady taking our order was pretty rude. Lots of heavy sighing and eye rolling apparently because we didn't give our order fast enough or in the right order.

As for our turkey and avocado sandwiches....they were good. Nothing special. Honestly, it tasted like the turkey sandwiches you'd find at an average local deli. Also, $9 for a sandwich? They are definitely generous with their turkey, but the price seemed a bit high.

Completely forgot about my favorite sandiwich spot: EZ-J's in PB!

I never understood the allure of DZ. When I first moved here several years ago, seemed many locals recommended DZ's sandwiches. The first few times I tried them, was turned off by the gargantuan servings of meat. Didn't find the soups particularly good either.

Thanks, everyone. We ended up at PLS and tried the scallop sandwich. It hit the spot for both Mom and me.

I am keeping these recommendations in mind because many times I find myself craving a good sandwich.

Salud.

Thank you for the prompt response.

I thought about K sandwiches, but my mom is not open to anything other than "traditional American" sandwiches. I know, I know.

PLS sounds good, she'd love the scallop sandwich.

Mom is in town from AZ and wants a good sandwich. I am drawing a blank. Any suggestions other than Urban Solace?

Chain Restaurants in peril

So righteous.

I'm looking at the big picture, folks.

When chain restaurants close, servers lose jobs. Those servers are local.

I don't disagree that in many ways, it feels nice to spend money at local establishments, however don't fool yourselves. Business closing, regardless of their commerical origins, affect people around you.

San Diego Cupcakes

Found 'em. Influx in Golden Hill.

Tried Babycakes, Angel cupcakes, Extraordinary Desserts, Heaven Scent, Burger Lounge, and the ice cream place in South Park on 30th (apologies for not recalling the name).

Influx is by far my favorite. I've tried every single one of their varieties, and have been sent into cupcake tailspins every time.

Cheers.

Tried "Sicilian" a few times and didn't care for the pizza nor the customer service. I won't return, especially since I live equidistant to that and Lefty's, and I prefer the latter so much more. I found Sicilian's pizza to be doughy and lackluster. At this point, I don't care what kind of "happy hour" specials they have, my money will be spent elsewhere.

Salud.

Chain Restaurants in peril

Of course there is. In this gloomy economy, it doesn't make sense to only patronize local establishments. Everything is interrelated. You won't find me at a TGIFriday's, but I am pleased to see it bustling with customers because that means money is being spent; integral to stimulate an economy.

Best Sandwich in Phx?

Oh man, you had me at "havarti, asparagus and arugula sandwich". I will make the trek from South Tempe to Central Phx for such a delight.

Do you like any other sandwiches at Bertha's, or would you say that one is their specialty?

Thank you for the recommendation.

Phx: Top Pizza Joints

The only places I've tried on Seftel's list are Humble Pie and Cibo. I enjoyed pies at both places, but they are not my go-to for pizza when I visit my hometown. I refuse to stand in lines, other than for concert tickets, longer than 45 minutes, so PB is out.

Caveat: I am a plebian pizza lover and do not pretend to have a sophisticated palatte. However, as a former and native Tempean, my favorites have always been Nello's and Rosati's. It's not just nostalgia, I really find their pizzas to be delicious yet simple. Also, I don't like anything fancier than jalapenos on my pie.

Let the criticism of those choices follow.

The Valley sure has a lot to offer in the way of pizza.

Just curious if any Chowhounder out there finds their favorite pizza joint missing from Seftel's list.

"Support your local restaurants"

For foodie reasons, sure, support your local restauants.

To stimulate the economy, how about support any kind of commercial enterprise? Either way, jobs are affected.

San Diego, Best Food, Best View?

No, I appreciate the candid feedback. I'm definitely one for quiet atmosphere. Perhaps that's why Nine-Ten is one of my favorites. The view, service, food, and setting have always been wonderful.

Best Carne Asada Burrito in Arizona?

The only time I miss eating meat is when I read about delicious carne asada burritos. I'm originally from South Tempe and never even heard of Los Taquitos. I'll have to swing by and tempt my feeble vegetarian palatte! Thanks for the recommendation, Poerz.

San Diego, Best Food, Best View?

Well your description of George's certainly turns me off! Maybe I'll stick to my favorite go-to option: Nine-Ten. I looked forward to trying something new in LJ Cove. Bummer.

As for Marine Room, I am not as enchanted with it as you. I find the atmosphere to be stuffy, with an overall musky and dated feel to the aesthetics. Unfortunately, I can't say the food was all that memorable. It wasn't poor, but it didn't warrant the high prices.

San Diego is for Breakfast

The long wait at the Mission (or any of its locations) is definitely not worth the wait. Ditto for the Broken Yolk.

As already stated, going out for breakfast is quite popular in SD and many people insist on waiting for food that is subpar. I'd rather hold off until lunch and get decent food withut battling crowds.

Can you explain further? I was thinking of taking my out-of-town mom to the terrace at George's.

dumb restaurant names [Moved from Ontario Board]

That's a horrible association for restaurant Bloc 11. I wonder how the owner(s) would explain the meaning behind this name. The spelling of "bloc" leads one to assume an Eastern European allusion.

I Had NO IDEA There Was So Much Sodium, Fat, HFCS In This!

This is akin to most ubiquitous brands of "maple" syrup not actually containing any maple. It's HFCS and flavorings. Good thing I caught onto this, thanks to a post on CH, and began purchasing actual maple syrup.

Dinner in Tempe

I would highly recommend Tricks, although I'm not sure they would have kid-friendly food.

Another good choice is Oregano's, a bit east of Mill Ave, off University. Oregano's has delicious pizza, pasta, salads. I'm sure any 6 year-old would be able to find something to eat there. The place gets busy and parking can be a hassle, especially when there are events in the area.

I didn't think soy was allowed in GF diets. You could substitute dairy and soy with rice milk.

Great place for Dinner/Happy Hour near the San Diego Zoo?

It was completely packed. The woman at the front desk told us to not bother waiting, although she appeased us by taking down our phone number.

I love sashimi also, but am a sucker for the double tuna rolls at Ota (forgot the exact name).

Good to know! I now purchase Peet's, and love it, but initially paid more for Starbuck's. Since I am a frequent Costco customer, will be sure to buy their brand since it is a lot cheaper.
Do you recommend one type of Kirkland coffee?
