Overrated & Overhyped, 2013

I am, thanks. Hoping to maybe visit back at the end of 2014 so lurking here from time to time... I'll likely gorge on tacos of all kinds and pay a visit to the SGV next time I'm in town.

Seeing that there is no decent place for tacos of any sort here in Brussels, I concur. The fries, however, are out of this world.

the best chocolate frozen dessert i've ever had

Lurking from Brussels and saying hello! The pistachio gelato at Bulgarini is the best I've ever had in my life, and I've had many...

Sorry your almond one wasn't so good, on occasion where I made the trek to Altadena and they were out of pistachio, I've had hazelnut and it was mind-blowing as well.

Croquettes, chocolate, waffles and frites- one day in Brussels

The suggestion to go to Wittamer is an excellent one, and Pierre Marcolini is across the Place des Sablons so you will be good with chocolates. Here's a link to the Brussels transportation system site, I know there is a bus from Gare du Midi to les Sablons http://www.stib.be/index.htm?l=fr
It takes about 15 minutes max.

The Gare du Midi itself and the surrounding area are rather bleak. There's an excellent baraque à frites not too far https://www.facebook.com/friteriebarr...
if you take the subway or the tram, it's about 2 stops I think.

For croquettes I have no idea... it tends to be a starter when you go to sit-down restaurants. I've had some excellent ones at Les Armes de Bruxelles and La Taverne but there are rather expensive places.
This being said if you end up going to Les Sablons for chocolate there might be some restaurant nearby where you can have lunch. In Belgium by default almost all dishes come with frites and they're almost always excellent.

Quick cheese shopping in Amsterdam - near the Central Station or the Stedelijk

Sorry for the late follow-up, I didn't have a chance to post before now.

So I ended up at Wout Arxhoek totally randomly after my meetings ended earlier than expected. I got a fantastic super aged Gouda and also a milder one recommended by the cheese monger. The address is:

Wout Arxhoek Kaashandel
Damstraat 19, 1012 JL Amsterdam

They give out samples so you can taste everything, and they carry lots of non-Dutch cheeses as well, plus the usual accoutrements (nuts, dried fruits, etc.).

I also spent some time on Harlemmerstraat later since I had a good hour to kill before getting to the station. I didn't stop anywhere but there were several good quality food emporiums/delis/cheesemongers etc. including a Spanish deli. I promise myself to do some serious food shopping there next time I'll be in Amsterdam.

Quick cheese shopping in Amsterdam - near the Central Station or the Stedelijk

Hello, Amsterdam chowhounds,

I'll be having a very short trip but long business day in Amsterdam this coming Wednesday. I'd love to bring back some cheese but will be very limited time-wise, so is there a good place to buy some either:

- near the Central Station
- near the Stedelijk Museum

If worse comes to worse a good quality supermarket will do as long as it's in the vicinity of either of these two locations. I likely won't have much more than half an hour to do my shopping before I catch my train back to Brussels.

I'm mostly looking for aged cheese but open to all suggestions.

Thanks!

Brunch in Mid-City tomorrow Saturday - gluten-free options?

Hello and goodbye, lovely chowhound board participants.

I'm in the middle of moving hell and my brain is fried. My very good friend would like to have brunch with me tomorrow morning Saturday, around 11 AM. She's on a gluten-free diet, so a place that could offer some options for her would be good.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions, and also thanks for everybody who left some nice comments for me here and there over the last few months. I'll vicariously live through your postings once I'm in Belgium!

Tacos Leo - LaBrea at Venice - Current Info?

Their FB page has a phone # (323) 231 5116 so you can try calling and ask if the trompo is out. I live nearby and often drive by in the evenings, I don't recall seeing the trompo on weekdays.

Truck stops...and I am not talking about where your favorite taco guy parks his rig

Actually, you're right about trucks leaving from LA/Long Beach but I'm pretty sure there are at least a couple truck stops on the PCH in Long Beach/Wilmington. I used to drive on the PCH then up on Western to go back from Long Beach when I worked there and I think I noted a couple truck stops on the way.

I can't remember exactly where and I never stopped (sorry...) but I think it's either directly South or North of the refineries in Wilmington when you're on the PCH, on the right side of the road when you're heading toward LA. I'd surmise it's before the trucks hit the Alameda corridor. If anyone in Long Beach/Wilmington reads this and can confirm with names of the truck stops, and maybe even recommendations for the OP...

jamón ibérico de bellota

online you can try http://www.tienda.com/jamon/whole-ham... if you feel like spending a thousand bucks...
I've bought other Spanish products from La Tienda and they're as authentic as they come. Just beware because you will forever receive daily promotions and rebates in your mailbox.

Is it worth going to Campanile now?

Well, I haven't been in ages but each time I did it was for business lunches or dinners and I always found it just meh. Not very imaginative, kind of bland. Consistent, solid, but I never remembered any dish once I left the place. So if you've never been and there's no nostalgia factor, I'd say skip it.

AKASHA last night

I've been there a couple of times for dinner and like you I had a not so good experience. Not only it's expensive for what it is but the portions are small. I'm normally not a big eater but I left each time hungry.
Also each time I was there it was during winter when it was raining and I was really cold, even though the restaurant was packed (and loud). The service was very sweet and competent, but I don't think the food lives up to its prices.

Mayhaw and Muscadine Jelly in Los Angeles?

Good idea, I didn't think about it. Tried WF yesterday, they don't carry it. I'll try Surfas and Bristol Farms as well and if I can't find the jellies in any of them I'll go online, unless someone comes up with a mom and pop place that has it here.
I'm moving to Brussels in about 6 weeks now and I'm planning to import a few regional goodies with me!

Mayhaw and Muscadine Jelly in Los Angeles?

Hello,

Does anybody know if I can find stores selling mayhaw and muscadine jelly in Los Angeles?

Long story short, I was in New Orleans last Wednesday, wanted to buy some but knew TSA wouldn't let me have jelly jars in my carry-on (they did test my gumbo filé and Cajun spices for explosives!).

I know I could buy it online, but if there's a store in central Los Angeles that carry them it would be awesome. I'm super curious to try.

Thanks in advance!

Good espresso in Torrance?

Alas, I saw your post after I came back. So yes I can confirm the espresso at Old Torrance Coffee & Tea is no good whatsoever :(
it's on the too watery side. But their bathroom was spotless.

The Torrance farmers market was great and pretty large for a weekday morning one.

Good espresso in Torrance?

Hello, hello everybody,

I will be in Torrance tomorrow morning at a very ungodly hour (for me), driving down Crenshaw. I have one stop at the farmers market in the works and possibly another one on the way back at one of the Japanese markets.

In between these I will need caffeinated sustenance, and a clean bathroom.

Good espresso is more important than the cleanliness of the bathroom. Smooth and strong but not burnt rubber-y. Also not watery whatsoever. Bonus if the place has good snacks/pastries.

Any recommendation? I'm considering a place called "Old Torrance Coffee and Tea", but maybe there's something else/better? Say, even something really Italian? Is there such a thing in Torrance?

Thanks in advance! Hopefully I'll see your recs tonight.

I need a challah and soon. and given my constraints, i don't even need it to be the best in the city.

even Ralph's carries challah, at least the one on 3rd & La Brea does. I think they carry it from the Diamond Bakery on Fairfax, if you're willing to travel a bit westward.

Has anyone tried Cafe Gratitude on Rose yet?

I don't know, I was at the one on Larchmont 2 weeks ago with a friend, I wasn't particularly riled by the hippie cult atmosphere but I found the food mediocre. I think I had something called "I am humble" (?), a sort of dal over brown rice with some corn, which was just sorta OK in a super bland, could use some spices category. Mushy, lukewarm and not particularly interesting. It reminded me a bit of school cafeteria food in its uninspired blandness. I know I can't really judge a place on the strength of one dish, but it didn't make me want to come back and try other things.

I'm all for a "neighborhood of the month" post, it's really promising.

Also because it could incorporate specialty grocery stores in addition to the restaurants and cafés. You know "and after you tried this fantastic [insert super rare ethnic specialty] at [great hidden gem] don't forget to walk 3 doors down and explore the local store for [insert super exciting spice/condiment/baked item/drink].
