Kater's Profile
Spice Kitchen, new Indian restaurant in Trooper, PA
I just gave them a second try and once again was so disappointed. The food is just off. They put some sort of old sliced boneless chicken breast in the makhani and I would swear that the makhani sauce was from a jar. Korma was bland and there was no almond flavor and the bread was rubbery. Just not good at all and I want to support them!
Pork bones for sale?
Not sure where you are but Assi has them. I would bet that Ilgs would also provide them if you call ahead.
Becca's Restaurant - Phoenixville
We gave it a try and were unimpressed. The service was good but the food was pedestrian and several entrees featured overcooked fish and undercooked risotto. Appetizers were fine but as a whole this was an overpriced mediocre meal.
Koko Korean BBQ in North Wales?
Yes it is open or was a week ago. They make an awesome romaine salad to go with their kalbi but their barbecue is not my favorite. I find the quality of meat better at Gaya.
Anyone tried authentic Korean -- Che Ju Do ?
No, not yet. We eat a lot of Korean food and my son saw it on television and is dying to try it. I showed him plenty of videos of the octopus crawling out of people's mouths and up their noses but that just seemed to spur him on!
Anyone tried authentic Korean -- Che Ju Do ?
I haven't been there but I have been looking for a restaurant that serves live octopus in Philadelphia. If we get there before anyone else replies I will let you know!! thank you!
Anyone know where in the Burbs (montco) that I can get Fastnachts
Yes, they advertise for Fastnachts Day but I think they are just selling their regular doughnuts. I did not grow up with the tradition but understand that the real deal is something quite different.
Applewood Smoked Bacon
Try Illg's in Chalfont. Their bacon is beautifully made. You can select the slab and they will slice it to order. They have double smoked and uncured bacon and I do believe that they have applewood smoked but if that is an absolutely requirement, call them first!
Zacharias Creek Closed
I am happy to hear that they are bouncing back from the unfortunate flooding problem but we do not go there. The food just isn't very good, though I agree that I don't mind paying elevated prices at a BYOB since they miss out on the wine markup.
Valentines dinner with a two year old
Have you ever been to Gaya on 73? They have really good Korean food, it is pretty with fantastic service but very child friendly. They do have a liquor license and both the bbq and hot pots are fantastic. I also love their spicy stir fried octopus.
Calling all fennel and baby bok choy lovers
I roast the fennel bulb (you can discard the stalk or save it for stock) with grape tomatoes. Remove the core and just slice the fennel bulb then toss with olive oil and salt and pepper. Add a couple of handfuls of grape tomatoes and roast. Before you serve it add some lemon zest and a few of the fennel fronds for color.
the fronds are the feathery green bits on the stalk, you just use them like a finishing herb - chop them up a little
I'm sorry if I am way behind on this but has Blue Fin (plymouth meeting) moved?
I haven't been to the old location in awhile but saw a large space with their name posted in a shopping center at 202 and Germantown. It was in a space that has house a couple of ill fated asian restaurants.
Is it true? ARe they moving? That would be so wonderful!
Moving to Eagleville/KoP need direction to great chow
I'm not sure where you are but The Grand Fromage is quite good and there is also a good cheese counter in the farmer's market in Springhouse.
ISO: Christmas Lollipops
They are called barley toy pops sometimes barley clear toy pops or just clear toys which are the figures without sticks. Merrymead in Schwenksville carries them or you can order them online. They are made in Lancaster so also check places that carry PA Dutch products.
Where are you getting your turkey?
Well, I will be saving this thread for next year because I was not particularly impressed with the turkey. I ordered a fresh turkey and it was partially frozen when I received it. It was not as good as the turkeys I usually get a Whole Foods and the skin was torn in a few locations. I can get a much better bird for the price elsewhere.
BACON!
Take a drive out to Ilg's in Chalfont. You can select your bacon and they slice it to order. Also they will give you the rind for soup.
Where are you getting your turkey?
Thanks for all the great ideas. I just found out that I can get a bourbon red from Longview market in Worcester.
Palm Sugar -- Now I know why
I have never had mold in a jar of palm sugar.
Is it possible that you are mistaking the sealing wax sitting on top of the sugar for mold?
Help with Asian inspired barbecue menu
I would make kalbi. Get flanken cut beef short ribs (some butchers know korean ribs and korean markets have them of course) then marinate in sesame oil, salt, soy, sugar (raw or palm), crushed asian pear, shaved carrots, frenched onion, tons of ground black pepper, sliced long hot green peppers, and a little mirin or sake. The following day, scrap the veg from the ribs and grill. Serve with steamed rice and bean paste and green leaf lettuce for wrapping.
Where are you getting your turkey?
great market but I do not believe that they have heritage birds
Where are you getting your turkey?
I'm trying to decide where to get my turkey this year. I like a heritage turkey but have had to have them shipped. I would like to go with a locally raised bird. Heritage would still be best but I would go with free range organic white turkey if it is local and high quality.
Where can I find pork belly out near Collegeville
Well you can definitely get it at Assi in Lansdale. You can also usually get it at Sae Han Market in Blue Bell.
Chinese in Collegeville/Trooper area
I haven't found a local Chinese that I like but have you tried Abacus (Lansdale) and Golden Sea (Blue Bell)?
Neither is great but they are sometimes good. Abacus has a nice Chilean Sea Bass with garlic ginger sauce. It is not always on the menu but they will usually make it for you.

Chinese in Collegeville/Trooper area
I have been there and have to say that it is mediocre at best. They offer sushi and chinese dishes but none of it is very good.
Narrowing the restaurant choices down for family vacation in Maui
ewe! funny!
so you can still go to the goat farm and buy some of their truffles - they have goat cheese in them but you wont' notice.
If you go to the vineyard nearby they have a lovely picnic area where you can enjoy a bottle of wine. You can get a picnic from your hotel or Ulupalakua Ranch which is right across the street - well a little bit down the road but very very close.
Also for fruit there is an awesome fruit stand on the way to Lahaina from Wailea. I think it is called Olowalu. The owners/employees are quite odd. But they have some damn good fruit. They charge and arm and a leg but they quality is good. They also have great pineapple and they will cut it up for you if you ask. Also they have awesome dragon fruit and star fruit. To give you an idea of the pricing the last dragon fruit I bought there cost $15! Still it is a good place to get your sunset fruit.

Oh also, if you're going upcountry you can get a tasting plate for lunch at Surfing Goat Dairy farm and you're welcome to bring a bottle of wine. In fact, there are a couple of bottles at Tedeschi that are not bad. They do a sparkling dry rose that is quite nice.
Cheaper eats near Wailea
Go to Foodland in Kihei for poke and musubi. Also try Isana for Korean food. Da Kitchen in Kihei has some good food but the girls at the counter are grumpy. Portions are enormous. Some people will tell you to go to Freds and Cafe O'Lei but both are gross. Wokstar is fun though the food isn't great - oh actually the bbq place behind it isn't that bad.
