Rizza's Profile
Joe's on Abbott Kinney? Still good or is there something else w/ of 405 - same price range?
I went to Joe's recently. I think the food is still wonderful. My husband had one of the most delicious steaks I have ever tasted on our last visit. The food is prepared so thoughtfuly, and the presentation is always so special. They have a great wine list, and an excellent staff. It's a great choice.
I also love Fig in the Fairmont Hotel. The chef is very creative, and always lists what produce is almost out of season, at the peak of it's season and coming into season at the bottom of the menu. The ambiance is wonderful. I always feel like I'm on vacation when I go there.
Reading mixed reviews of Drago Centro...& love your comments on our DineLA 2011 tentative picks
I've been reading all the menus myself. Starry Kitchen has the funest one I've seen so far...great discriptions! It makes me want to try it. I had lunch at The Lobster last week and had the Dine LA menu. Unfortunately the menu descriptions did not match what came out of the kitchen ("roasted" tomatoes and burratta came out with uncooked tomatoes, "spicy" caesar salad with crab enchiladas wasn't spicy at all, etc.). We had a good time..beautiful view and pretty nice wine list, but being in the $$$ category with the likes of Spago and Water Grill? I think it should have been $ - $$.

One of our favorite games in college was to play "what the f*** is this" while cleaning out the refrigerator...to funny!
First time to Napa - need ADVICE please! =)
I too am headed to Napa and looking for recs. But some of these posts are from 2006/2007 or focused on Sonoma. Are you a local? Can you recommend any great lunch spots or affordable dinners? Does happy hour exist there? Bottega sounds like a "do not miss". And Bistro Jentry sounds interesting. Anything in Napa proper? tia

For awesome breakfast/lunch head to Cheeky's for a menu that changes weekly using seasonal ingredients. I haven't tried anything I didn't like here. We're heading out too, and I just can't wait to go. Amazing cocktails and great atmosphere with their beautiful herb garden adjacent.

Absolute Best Risotto You Will EVER Eat: Toasted Pistachio Gorgonzola Dolce
I was very happy that I tried this dish. But I wasn't completely blown away as I thought I would be. I would like to try to alter it a little as well. Some people in my gourmet group really liked it. Others were put off a little by the pistachios. The texture of the nuts gave the impression that the risotto wasn't fully cooked since there was crunch in there, although I am certain it was. But like I said, I am glad I gave it a go. It was fun reading all these posts and hunting down the ingredients. I may even try it again someday. (Did not dare try to keep it warm btw...made it last minute with my friends in the kitchen).
GREAT new Italian Deli/cafe in Torrance of all places!!!!
Do they sell beer/wine? And is it near Buffalo Fire Department? Not sure I'm familiar with "The Firehouse".

need help with brunch for a bunch
If you are making the scones, consider "Sticky Fingers Bakery" scone mix, available at Coast Plus, and comes in several flavors. All you have to do is add water, and bake for about 20 min.. I make mine mini. They are so surprisingly good! I always keep a package in my pantry for unexpected guests, or on days I can't get the kids out of bed for school.

For a salad idea...my aunt makes a great one that uses frozen (gasp!) mixed vegetables (green beans, carrots, etc.), dices apples, celery, green onion, and whatever else you like. You keep these in a tupperware bowl with the dressing already on. At the last minute toss with the greens. It is so good! And requested at many family get-togethers. I find this really works with whatever veggies you use, and I make it all the time for picnics and bar b ques.

This make a day ahead strata is such a crowd pleaser ("Tahoe Brunch"):
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~mjw/recipes/casserole/tahoe-brunch-cass.html
But it might be too similar to the French toast. I have a brunch every year serving this and maybe a vegeterian strata with fruit salad and pastries for a sweet treat.
I also have pre-mixed my eggs and frittata fillings (minus the cheese) and kept it in the fridge overnight so all I have to do is pour and bake the next day. Good luck! Have fun!
Do you have a Chinese food guilty-pleasure?
I stumbled upon this thread looking for Korean in Cerritos area. I work in Cerritos 4 times per month and am always looking for new things to try for lunch. I will check out these recommendations. But I am realy intrigued by your suggestion of Moo's. I live right by it and have never been in. I wil definately try the noodles and dumplings. Thank you for the tip!

Absolute Best Risotto You Will EVER Eat: Toasted Pistachio Gorgonzola Dolce
Ok...one more risotto question (I'm making it next weekend!). Is it possible to make it ahead of time and keep it in a chafing dish or crock pot? I am very excited to try it! Thank you for your input.

I, for one. am so happy to hear your included opinion of the leftovers. Can't wait to get myself invloved in this dish...it sems "involved" is he only way to discribe it. Probably turning out to be a one night affair for me, instead of a part of my super club. I will report back as well!
Favorite Meals Under $5
Continuing in the Torrance vein, Restraunt Christine has a happy hour from 5:00-6:30. Everything is $5. The menu changes weekly, and has quite a few items on it, most coming with a side of dressed greens. I recommend the vegetable mu shu which is not traditional, but very tasty. And last week I had a new item, pulled pork sliders. These were awesome for $5. Two sliders with a good amount of slow cooked savory pork (not sweet or bar-b-quey) on sweet sloder rolls topped with fried onions. I was really blown away that I could get something that good for the price of drive through. Their happy hour white wine, also $5, is excellent as well. An unoaked chardonnay that goes well with the food.
Urasawa - Update
Since this is the most recent post I can find about Ursawa, could you please let me know the price per person (without alchohol). I have an "Ursawa fund" going and am wondering if the price has changed at all. Also...looking at your pics., did you bring wine from your own cellar? What's the corkage if you did, and how many bottles did you purchase from them. The wines look fantastic! I am planning on saving just for the meal itself, and whatever alchohol we consume will be paid for just like a night out. Pictures are great...thank you for sharing!

Thank you! I wouldn't want to be disappointed. But merely the idea of bottarga pizza makes it worth the trip. I'm sure there will be plenty to satisfy me on the menu.

As a long time TJ's shopper (store #38 is still my fave.), and a one time employee (although 11 years ago) of TJ's, I have to speak on behalf of the employees. They see waaayyyyyyy more rude customers than you can even imagine. I know professional service is always appreciated (and expected by most). But it is really rare that I encounted less than very friendly service at any of their stores I shop at. It's sad that the customers don't hold themselves to the same standards. I loved working there, but just couldn't handle going into work in a great mood just to have several customers walk in and start YELLING at me right when they got in the door. I can't believe how many of those crew members can do it for so long and keep those smiles on their faces like they do.

So I've read through the more than 200 replies a couple of times (without missing anything, I swear!) and I really want to make this. I am considering making it for my supper club. Our supper club consists of 4 couples, and traditionally the host couple makes the main dish, and everyone else is assigned an appetizer, side, or dessert. I feel like this would work better as a primi for this group. Even though I am hosting, I want to incorporate it. Does anyone who's made it have a suggestion as to what would work as the main? I may have two couples bring apps., and on e a dessert to make it all work out. Thank you in advance if you can help! Any ideas for other courses would be oh so greatly appreciated!

This has been on my list to try for a while. But the thought of bottarga pizza just moved it up to the top spot!
Best, Simplest way to enjoy a fried egg?
Thank you! I started researching on my own as well. It sounds delicious! Can't wait to cook 'em up!

I want to make this...do you just add the garlic to the beans and water when they're cooking?
