Not doubting your taste, just surprised. Worth checking out next time we're dining on the Ave. Looking at their online menu, I can certainly say that the last time I ate there, "good taste frog legs" were not on the menu.

Seriously? China First? Please elaborate! I haven't been there in a long time as the last time I ate there I thought it had slipped past mediocre to "can we get Chinese at Safeway instead?".

Varsity Inn Wallingford black beans

Went there for breakfast this morning and had their carnitas breakfast. The pork was wonderful. The black beans were perplexing. Has anyone else had them? I tasted and pondered, not even sure if I liked them or not. Wine? They seemed sweet and the closest I could come to describing is that it tasted like someone had stirred a jar of grape jelly into them. I didn't know how to ask without sounding critical or loony. ("Chowhound: Where you can sound critical and loony without looking a very nice waitress in the eye.") I'm just curious as I've never tasted anything like them.

What is a "medium" chinese eggplant?

I hate recipes like that. Eggplant comes in so many different shapes and sizes, "3 medium" is meaningless. I'd say 18 inches is a large eggplant. Looking around the web, 8-12" seems more common for Chinese eggplant, so maybe 1 to 1 1/2 of the eggplants you have should be sufficient.

News I can use, thanks! I've only been there for dinner once and all I remember is that the sangria was tasty but strong. (I only had one, but I felt it!) Their website says their coffee is Fonte "Forty200" blend.

I'm a (good) frosting fiend, but I don't like the roses, because I imagine I can taste the food coloring. I do, however, eat the cake layers first, saving the frosting with just a bit of cake for last.

RIP Swingside Cafe

I knew it was coming, he'd announced it almost a year ago. I wish he'd bequeath a few of his recipes to someone before he goes. Favorite memory was going to hear live music and sitting so close we were essentially sharing our table with the musicians. He'll be missed, as will his hazelnut pesto, aglio olio and wild boar/venison Bolognese.

I think it is what it is. Maybe you should try another brand? S&B is good--a coworker smelled it and said, "How did you make that?" When I told her, she was shocked...she went home, asked her Mom and found out that her Japanese Mom's secret family recipe was a block of S&B!

Mandatory municipal composting: how do you handle your food scraps?

I think they're only going to fine people who obviously aren't trying. Still, we do have happy urban wildlife...I had one of those green-cones for awhile and one morning opened it to find a happy, fat, warm rat munching my leavings. After that I knocked on the lid before opening. I'm happy to leave it to the collectors, and so far the neighborhood raccoons have left the bin be. We don't generate enough interesting waste to bother knocking over. I just wish they'd pick up the recycling every week.

Mandatory municipal composting: how do you handle your food scraps?

When I lost the lid to my stainless compost bucket I got one of the ventilated Bio Bag buckets. It does take up a bit of real estate, but not much. Even with all the ventilation a bag will disintegrate before I get it filled, so I take it bucket and all out to the green-waste bin. (Or I do, now, after having to pick up egg shells and moldy whatevers from my lawn a couple of weeks ago.) Still, it can go a week or until it's full and I haven't had any leakage onto the counter.

Eggs all Taste The Same to Me

If people can't taste the difference, I wonder if they've had pastured eggs. I get them (when the chickens are cooperating)with my meat CSA and they're almost too eggy for me. These are chickens who follow the cows around the pastures. I also found myself explaining to people that a cake I made was yellow because of the yolks, not because of food coloring. These aren't any special breed of chickens--judging from the shells, they're a mixed lot.

Casino Suggestion

I'm not a big casino-goer, but Snoqualmie is the closest and I think it's the nicest of the ones in the immediate Seattle area. I've only eaten at the Asian Bistro, but it was fine.

How do I make a good coffee at 7-Eleven?

This is a good combo. The sweetened coffee beverages are too much on their own, but you cut them with regular coffee and then add a little more cream and you've got something quite palatable.
