Diners,Drive-ins, and Dives Calgary.
The Dell in Bowness. Family run - definitely a dive - but good food.
Calgary Business dinner
Divino's, Murrietta's, Blink and The Trib are all on 8th Avenue and easy walking from the Palliser.
Beignets in Calgary?
Maybe in New Orleans? I don't think that there is anywhere in Calgary making beignet, but I could be wrong.
Southern Style Fried Chicken in Calgary
The biggest problem with doing Southern Style BBQ in the North is the lack of hard woods and the lack of a BBQ culture (a hard thing to develop when the climate is what it is here). The quality of the meat isn't really an issue as some of the best BBQ is done with some of the lowest quality cuts. Personally I have never had a good meal at Palominos (black eyed peas still crunchy, brisket extremely tough and ribs that tasted like they had been dredged in flour). Big T's is passable most of the time, but definitely not at the level of the Q joints I've visited in the States.
BBQ on the Bow
It does have all of those elements, but first and foremost it is a BBQ competition.
I'm not disagreeing with other posters, as I said in my first post I too came away unimpressed the first year I went. And it probably shouldn't be hyped as a festival. Unlike Major_9000 the other competitions that I have been to in Kansas and North Carolina did not sell the competitors meat.
What appears to be happening here is a disconnect between posters expecting a festival and competitors competing. I will take your comments to the board of the Competition.
BBQ on the Bow
Providing the society with feedback would be more positive than just complaining on Chowhound that the experience didn't live up to the expectation.
BBQ on the Bow
The first thing that needs to be understood is that this is a BBQ competition. The cooks are there to compete, they are not there to provide samples to the general public. Secondly, there are numerous health regulations regarding providing food from an unlicensed, uninspected "kitchen".
The first year that I attended I came away feeling the same, but since then got involved and have come to understand and enjoy the event much more.
best indian food calgary
Another great East Indian (takeout only) in the upper North West is Safron across the street from Churchill High School. It is owned by the same people who own the spice store in the same strip mall.
Inca Kola in Calgary
Thanks everyone. I did find the Tifco Latinamerican Foods website yesterday along with another one out of Miami that ships to Canada. So I think that there will be Inca Kola.
The event is showcasing our company's operations in Peru to our employees. Should be a fun time.
Inca Kola in Calgary
Does anyone know where I can find Inca Kola in Calgary? We are doing an event tied to Peru and would like to serve authentic kola.
Rush in Calgary?
Went to Rush for lunch yesterday, a group of five people. Here are my impressions. As we approached the doorway a hostess, dressed in a simple black dress without too much leg or cleavage showing, immediately came forward to open it for us. We were then greeted by the maitre’d and shown to our table (table 12 apparently the favorite of our server). The space is quite lovely – very similar to Seven, but in blacks, however it did not seem dark at all. The tables have a fair bit of space between them.
The menu is all prix fixe with two courses for $30 and three courses for $38. It appeared that all wines come by the glass, I didn’t see any bottles on the menu, but there may be a wine menu that we didn’t see. There were four choices for appetizer: Pea and Coconut Bisque, Vegetable Salad, Goat Cheese and Beet Tart and Carbonara Risotto. The entree choices were: Milk-fed Pig with peas and apples, Salmon, Mushroom Ragout Pasta and Braised Short Ribs. I don’t remember all of the deserts, but there was something chocolate, something vanilla, something peach and one other – maybe mocha? All of the dishes were described better than I have.
We were all started with an amuse bouche of white cheddar crackers and then given some beautiful bread. Two of us had the tart to start, two had the risotto and one had the vegetable salad. All of the appetizers were beautifully presented. The tart (which I had) was lovely, the base was phyllo off of which the subtleness of the cheese and the sweetness of the beets played beautifully. The risotto was declared wonderful – one of the people eating it is an extremely picky eater (read steak sandwich – medium well and fries type) who had never had risotto and declared it the best thing ever. The vegetable salad appeared to be a simple green salad, but the diner declared the dressing to be light and tasty.
For mains: two had the braised ribs, two had the pig and I had the mushroom ragout pasta. The pasta was delightful, the mushrooms adding a meatiness to the dish. The pig was declared melt in the mouth tender. Neither of the people eating the ribs finished their dishes declaring that they were too full after the appetizers.
None of us had desserts. Service was attentive throughout with only a couple of small glitches – forgot to bring a drink, gave wine glass to wrong person – no big issues at all. Lunch for five (including quite a few glasses of wine, tip and tax) came to just over $450. Overall we were very pleased and would definitely go back again.
Edelweiss Village-Calgary
Just thought that I'd mention that they are closed on Sundays. As slingshotz said the food is pretty good and definitely rustic.
Cora's opening in Northland Mall (Calgary)
Of course, that's the one hallway we didn't go down. Thanks!
Cora's opening in Northland Mall (Calgary)
Where exactly in Northland Mall is it going to be? We were there on the weekend and didn't see anything - may have just been having a blind moment.
Good Calgary restaurant for staff Christmas party?
Yes, but 50 people May long weekend is not 200 people at Christmas.
Good Calgary restaurant for staff Christmas party?
You are probably a little late to try to find a 200 person place at this point. Most of the large venues are booked by corporations at least a year to two years in advance. My company has theirs booked five years in advance. You may be able to book an entire restaurant but then its not going to be mid to low end. Best bet would probably be to book a community center and have it catered.
Sorry to sound pestimistic, but that's the reality in Calgary right now. I was recently looking for a room for an 80 person meeting and everything was booked and that was for the end of May!
Brunch Rec
Heritage Park is still doing their brunch at the Wainwright Hotel until the end of April.
Big family eating out in Calgary
They closed the McLeod Trail location because of lack of staff. The McMahon location's quality went down for a little while, but seems to be back up to snuff again.
hole in the wall - calgary
I remember going here as a kid back in the '70's. My sister and all of her friends had their first jobs there as waitresses. I don't think that it's changed much since way back then. I may have to revisit for the nostalgia factor!
hole in the wall - calgary
The Sub Company is just a little further down the road from King's. I like their Wor Won Ton better than King's.
Noble in Calgary?
Ned Bell has gone to Kelowna to open his own restaurant. Perhaps that's who you were thinking of.
Calgary Mango Shiva?
Walking by today I noticed a big sign in front saying that they will reopen early spring 2008. Can't wait!
hole in the wall - calgary
Honestly haven't had the buffet - just the wor won ton - which in my opinion is really good.
hole in the wall - calgary
Try the Sub Company (also known as the Sunshine Cafe) at 404 Meridian Road NE. Great big bowls of Wor Won Ton Noodle Soup for under $7. Huge breakfasts for under $5. They have a small Chinese Buffet on weekdays as well as sandwiches, burgers, etc. Very little ambiance - but that's part of being a hole in the wall.
Valentine's Day in Calgary
The Blue House Cafe on 19th Street at Northmount Drive NW may fit the bill. It is Latin American food with an eye to seafood. It's small and sometimes quite crowded, but if you have the right table can be quite romantic. They also usually have live music.
Best Cheap/Value Breakfast in Calgary
The price at the Dell has gone up to I think closer to $7. However, in the same general area Angels has a breakfast for under $5. Same type of breakfast with two eggs, toast, hashbrowns and meat choice.
Wiener Schnitzel House - Bowness Rd NW
Also in the Bowness Shopping Centre is the Dell Cafe (also frozen in time!). Great for breakfast or lunch. Going in the other direction on Bowness Road is Angels (a drive in/eat in burger joint).
Wiener Schnitzel House - Bowness Rd NW
Yes, both restaurants are on Bowness Road down the hill from the hotels. When you get to Bowness Road turn right. Salt and Pepper is in "downtown Bowness" and will be on the right side of the road. Continue further across the bridge and past the Safeways at Home Road into "downtown Montgomery" the Weiner Schnitzel House is also on the right - just before the set of pedestrian lights. The hours for the Weiner Schnitzel House are 4 pm - 8 pm Tues to Fri and 12 noon - 8 pm on Saturday. The are closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Mid City lanes area recomendations?
Second Mandina's. Ate there on Thursday before going to see Rosie Ledet at Mid-City. Cab fare was just over $3. Food was excellent, service was top notch and the place was bustling. Great to see.
