How is the food at City Winery? Anything better nearby?

Thanks for all the tips, folks, greatly appreciate it!

Assuming we have enough time beforehand, I think we may try the oysters at Aqua Grill and see what else we find nearby before having some wine at the show.

How is the food at City Winery? Anything better nearby?

Hi folks,

My girlfriend got tickets to a show at City Winery next week. They e-mailed her today to say that the doors open beforehand and they serve dinner. My question (of course): is it any good?

I've searched this board a bit but can't seem to find a review of their food, just some positive comments for wine and cheese plates. Should we get dinner there? Or do folks recommend something else? We're not looking for anything too fancy, but I don't know that part of town very well.

Thanks!

Any decent Italian food near Quad Cinemas (13th bet. 5th/6th Aves.)

Have you been to Da Andrea? I heard it was close but haven't heard from anyone who's been there.

Thanks, have not tried, assumed it would be tough based on reputation. Will look into it.

Hey folks,

Heading to the movies downtown tonight with friends (trying to see the Oscar nominees) and we were hoping to grab Italian food after the movie. I know Otto's gotten great reviews, but I also know we won't get in there on a Sat. night. Any other good neighborhood spots in the Village/West Village that folks recommend?

Thanks for your help.

Ann Arborites heading downtown?

Thanks for the ideas! Cookshop was my first choice, but 6:30 was all they had for reservations. I will look into Hearth.

Ann Arborites heading downtown?

Interesting, thanks. I didn't know anything about it, but was suggested above. I'll let my aunt know and see if she wants to reconsider.

Ann Arborites heading downtown?

Thanks again! I sent a few of everyone's suggestions to my aunt this morning. She read a few reviews and menus and chose Papatzul. I was able to get a reservation for their visit in a few weeks, so I'm all set for now, looking forward to it.

Ann Arborites heading downtown?

Hi,

I'm new to NYC and desperately need some help. I've got my aunt and her boyfriend in town from Ann Arbor (so they're laid back, but know good food) for dinner in two weeks. I'd like to take them someplace delicious but not too exotic. I'd ideally like to be able to make a reservation if possible, I'm not looking to break the bank, and I think it would be fun to take them someplace downtown (or elsewhere, just want to give them a feel for Manhattan). Specifically, here's what my aunt gave for guidelines:

"We are wide open as to food - we eat anything except sushi
(preferring our parasites cooked ) and we're not big fans of Indian.
Chinese,Thai, Mexican, Italian, French, Fusion, American....
or really most anything and anywhere we can
take a cab to is great. More relaxed, less fancy is preferred over
more formal dining since we are typical Ann Arborites who
hate to have to get very dressed up ;-)."

Help! I've scoured the Chowhounde boards yesterday and today, but many of the suggestions seemed quite expensive or don't take reservations. I'm so new here -- what should a reasonably-priced "nice" dinner cost? I've read many good things on here about Cookshop, but other than that I am overwhelmed by the choices.

Thanks,
Rincon

Fried Clams coming home from the Cape?

Hey Folks -- Just heard from my Dad that his favorite place for fried clams (Sandy's in Buzzard's Bay) has closed down. It was the perfect spot to stop on the way home to Boston at the end of a summer weekend. Any Chowhounds able to recommend a replacement for folks coming over the Bourne Bridge and heading north? Much thanks.
