The Catbird Seat - Nashville
Well, dinner last week at The Catbird Seat was super. A fantastic tour through two of their tasting menus with two different beverage pairings. The team there does a really wonderful job. Arriving at 6:30, we were there for nearly 3 and half hours. Diners’ arrivals are staggered throughout the night to avoid a crush, and of the places at the counter, about 6 had a second seating (although at no time were all 32 counter seats occupied); both corner banquettes had groups of 6 diners each for the evening. After dinner, you’re presented with a take-home listing of all the courses.
A great meal, a great experience, and - despite what may be a difficult-for-some-folks-to-embrace $100 price tag per person for the food - a great value. This is a big-city ambitious and impressive food experience going on here, at significantly less than a big-city price. The non-alcohol and reserve alcohol pairings at $20 and $75, respectively, were good values, too.
While the chefs typically get all the glory in our Iron Chef culture these days, Jane Lopes deserves a special call-out. She crafts incredibly innovative beverage pairings. Part sommelier, part mixologist, and part alchemist, her choices and blendings were really special and enjoyable, and included some very interesting selections. I’ve not experienced anything like she’s doing anywhere else.
Highly recommended. And looking for an opportunity to go back again!
Note: They change out 2-3 items each week to keep the menu constantly evolving and reflecting the best ingredients. So you probably shouldn’t expect the same exact courses. Our favorites this night: the Tartar of Beef, the Halibut, and the Kale Soup.
=> Standard menu with reserve alcohol beverage pairing ($100 + $75). A different pour with each course.
Amuse: SAVORY OREO made with a porcini cookie and parmesan crème filling

- Beverage: Marc Hebrart brut rosé (France) with quince vinegar and honey
3. RAMP VICHYSSOISE made with pickled habanero vinegar, with pork belly, micro carrot, watercress, and violet flower
- Beverage: 2008 Trimbach Gewurztraminer (Alsace, France)
4. HALIBUT with fava beans, sorrel, and black garlic and lemon pudding drops
- Beverage: 2008 Cave Caloz Heida (Switzerland)
5. PIGEON with white asparagus, shaved porcini, pigeon liver mousse, lovage, and charred green asparagus jus

=> No meat, no dairy menu with non-alcohol beverage pairing ($100 + $20). A different pour with about every other course.
Amuse: SAVORY OREO made with a green apple gelee cookie and tofu with olive oil crème filling
1. TRIO of a Chatham OYSTER on the half shell with cucumber and yuzu vinaigrette, hot water CORNBREAD ball with honey, and a HOT POTATO with spices and dill on a wonder bread crisp
2. Minced MUSHROOMS and TOFU with sliced truffle, juniper, burned bread, smoked roe, and rosemary
3. KALE SOUP made with coconut milk and pickled habanero vinegar, with grilled oyster mushrooms, pickled micro carrot, watercress, and violet flower

The Catbird Seat - Nashville
Thanks for the referral to the Nashville Scene. The review from December does talk a little about the beverages, and I'll see whether a post elicits any more info.

The Catbird Seat - Nashville
I'm looking forward very much to my dinner at The Catbird Seat next week, and would appreciate any of your comments to enhance the experience.
Specifically, I'm interested to know more about the beverage options. What more can you tell me about what they serve and the serving sizes? Do the pairings comprise 7 different drinks - one for each course? What are the non-pairing options? What are the non-alcoholic drink options?
The Catbird Seat web-site says the following: "We offer optional beverage pairings. The standard beverage pairing is $40 per person, the reserve is $75 per person, and the non-alcoholic is $20 per person. A small reserve wine list is also available for you to order from."
One Chowhounder last month remarked: "great, creative and insanely well-priced drinks matches."
Thanks.
Sunday lunch in Nashville
I'm gonna hijack this thread a little. I'll be in Nashville on CMA Music Fest weekend and looking for Sunday brunch (pre-noon) spot. (Hmm, I wonder if that statement identifies me as some kind of sadistic idiot?) There will be 3 of us. The ability to reserve a table would be a clear bonus.
Ideal profile:
- bloody marys and champagne
- fried green tomatoes
- oysters (fried or raw)
- shrimp, grits
- crab cakes, fish
- eggs, waffles
I realize that "ideal" may not be the same as reality. Having said that, I'd appreciate your recommendations among the following (for which I've taken a look at their menus already) or others you can suggest:
- Chappy's
- Tavern
- ChaChah
- Garden Brunch Cafe
- Marche and Margot certainly look nice too, even if they cover less of the wish list. I might be swayed if you tell me the quality and experience there exceed some of the other options.
Based on what I've researched, I'm not so interested in Monell's (not looking for the fried chicken, ham, and gravy breakfast), Pancake Pantry, Loveless.
Thanks.
Anyone know where I can get burrata cheese in New Jersey?
Top Tomato (at least in Brick) also now carrying domestic burrata made by Antonio Mozzarella Factory (of Newark). $6.99 for an 8 oz ball. Good texture, but no flavor. The imported stuff is still worth the drive to Sickles Market.
Nashville - Vegan and/or vegetarian restaurants
Was in town for few days a couple of weeks ago. Had a quick and very enjoyable dinner at The Wild Cow. Two of us ended up with more food than we could eat:
Starter - Hummus Plate: Homemade hummus of the day; served with raw veggies & tortilla chips $5.50. -- With rosemary during our visit. Chunky style. Very good.
Sandwich - the Wild Rueben. Marinated & grilled tempeh or tofu, sauerkraut, shredded carrots, spicy mustard, homemade 1000 Island dressing, & Swiss cheese OR vegan cheese on rye bread; served with one side item $8.25. -- I had mine with tempeh and Swiss cheese. Very tasty and evocative of the "real" thing. Served warm. Filling.
Entree - The Far Eastland Bowl: Grilled tofu with garlicky kale, carrot-daikon slaw & sesame seeds; topped with peanut sauce and served over brown rice $8.50. -- Kale was especially enjoyable. Also very filling.
Side - lentil stew with carrots, onions, and garlic. -- Deep flavor, somehow smoky and sweet.
Side - chickpea salad. -- Ok.
Specials of the day for entree, soup, vegetable, juices, and desserts.
Highly recommended.

Uni trays, Japanese market?
Depends on how you define "short." Google Maps shows it to be 1 mile from the ferry terminal to Mitsuwa. I don't recall seeing sidewalks along that stretch of River Road, but there might be.
I do recall a bus / shuttle service between Mitsuwa and NYC. Check the Mitsuwa web site.
Uni trays, Japanese market?
Excellent comments and advice above wrt MItsuwa and H Mart (Edison). I'm in Toms River and face the same road trip. If you've never been to either, they're both worth a visit if you have a few hours. Pack your cooler and head to Mitsuwa first, and then stop at H Mart (Edison) on the way home.
Fyi, ikura and salmon sashimi are on sale this weekend at Mitsuwa:
http://mitsuwa.com/tenpo/newj/eindex.html
And over at H Mart (Edison) you can find this week's flyer here:
http://www.hmart.com/company_new/shop_store.asp?store_code=EDS
While I still make the trips to Mitsuwa when I have specific needs that I know H Mart can't satisfy (e.g., the variety of sushi and fresh yuzu), H Mart has become a valued part of my shopping routine. They have a really good full-service seafood department (which Mitsuwa does not), feature live fish in tanks, and usually have several varieties of mollusks too (also, this is where I got my live eels for Christmas Eve 2 years ago). Go on a Saturday morning (brace for crowds) and there are tasting stations set-up throughout the store featuring a great selection of (free) nibbles of products on sale.
I recently found Metropolitan Seafood in Lebanon, NJ, which while not convenient for us at the shore, has a great selection of sashimi quality fresh fish, and on my most recent visit had live sea urchins. But the specific fish available are going to vary based on what the owner, Mark, finds from his providers.
http://www.metroseafood.com/home.html
Likewise, I was surprised to find live sea urchins and live scallops 2 months ago at the recently-opened Shop-Rite in Toms River (on Rt 37 W at the Parkway). The sea urchin were from Maine, so the flavor is a little different (more briny) from what you may be used to with urchin from Santa Barbara or Japan, but they were deliciously fresh.
Finally, my usual Shop-Rite on Fischer Blvd in Toms River will do special orders. Judy, the seafood manager, has air-expressed fresh uni (trays) from California to the store (2nd day delivery) when I know I can't fit in a trip to H Mart or Mitsuwa. I find that it's not the "Grade A" uni that Mitsuwa gets (and also is a couple of dollars less expensive), but I've never had a complaint from my guests. I know that not all super-markets will do special orders; it depends on the local management team.
Naturally, you shouldn't expect to find most of the other items you're seeking at these non Asian shopping alternatives.
Good luck! Now you've stirred up my taste buds for some sea urchin, and it's not even 9 AM yet! What time should I be over for the party, neighbor?!
Need Unique, Delicious & Casual between E. Orange & Toms River NJ
Tapas - next to the H Mart in Edison there's a Korean Tofu House ("So Kong Dong") and Korean BBQ buffet ("Picnic Garden"). I haven't tried either of them yet - I'm usually just running into shop for some specialty groceries at the HMart - but they look pretty tempting. The shopping plaza is on Lincoln Hwy (Rt 27). They're a little ways off the GSP but certainly fit your "unique" and "casual" criteria.

Annual Pilgramage to Manchester N.J by a L.A. Hound with 14 y/o son in tow
One of our notable new restaurants this season is 709 Point Beach on Arnold Ave in Point Pleasant, opened by the former chef at Atlantic Bar & Grill. Sounds good, but I haven't been there yet. You can find postings on it if you do a search of the NJ board.

F&W - you might be a bit underwhelmed by our local versions of farmers' markets if you've been to some of the farmers' markets in LA (e.g., the Hollywood market or the Santa Monica market) which are really great, but the Toms River market on Wednesdays is indeed a good place to pick up local fresh produce. I've been stocking up on heirloom tomatoes, okra, shallots, and peaches, the last couple of weeks.

Italian hot dogs are a NJ institution. There are a couple of long running threads on the NJ Chow board that go on about the different styles and the "best" places to get one. Places like Jimmy Buff's and Dickie Dee's up north. I grew up on them, and still make my own at home. Do a search to learn more about them, but MGZ is right about Joe Joe's locally.

Back to Seabra's Marisqueira this past Friday night, and man, I do love that place. Had a great few hours with a couple of friends drinking, eating, and soaking up the local vibe.
Now here's something you won't find in too many places: "Ha caracois" ... land snails. Offered as a special (limited availability) appetizer. Cooked, but kept in a tray on ice at the counter/bar. Served with a little broth (natural cooking juices?) and a bundle of toothpicks so you can dig them out of their shells. Tasty, unique, and fun!

Combal.Zero menu advice
I’m considering a visit to Combal.Zero in October, and I’ve not been able to find much information about the menu options. The Combal.Zero web-site (English version) is not clear whether there are multiple menus and a la carte options, or whether the tasting menu is the only one.
Also, I eat everything, but my girlfriend does not eat meat (although fish and seafood is ok), and prefers to stay away from dairy. Is the chef accommodating to such requests, or should I skip Combal.Zero this time?
Thanks very much for your help and advice.

Serenity Cafe in Tom's River
According to the web-site, The Serenity Cafe is helmed by Chef Greg Manning. Chef Manning is of the past Jeffrey's (of Toms River), past Olde Corner Deli (of Island Heights), and the past Downtown Dinner Club (of Toms River).
I'd heard very good things about Jeffrey's and Olde Corner Deli, but never had the opportunity to try them. I did try the DDC a few times, but wasn't so impressed.

Mediocre dinner about a month ago. I felt the food had come down a level since the change in chefs. Offerings sounded inspired, but seemed a bit flat on the plate and palate. Service was adequate.
If the nights are weekend nights, be prepared for a wait; I don't believe AB&G takes reservations for a group of 4.

tom246 - glad to see your comments here, as a voice of credible posting. I look forward to hearing more from you on Serenity Cafe.
(By the way, even though the restaurant is on the westbound traffic side of Rt 37, it is east of the E/W address dividing line for Rt 37, which is the intersection at Rt 166 / Main St / Lakewood Rd - it's the first intersection on Rt 37 on the east side of the Garden State Parkway overpass. So the address for Serenity Cafe is correctly referred to as "Rt 37 East.")
Daniel's Bistro or Bistro 44?
hey bgut -- have you been to AB&G since the end of last year? I was not impressed with the food on my two visits this year since Chef d'Ennery took over the kitchen.
On the other hand, I have not yet been up to 709 Point Beach to see how Chef Jurusz is doing with his new place.
Haven't made it over to Daniel's Bistro this year either to see whether they're holding up as well as they did last year.

Count me as a Villa Vittoria regular and fan as well. I'm there a couple of times a month and always enjoy the food. They've had soft shell crabs francese over capellini (main course) for the last few weeks and italian hot peppers with potatoes (appetizer) this past week as specials. Depending on the size of your gathering, you may wish to inquire about the availability of their side room which is set apart from the main dining room. They have full bar service.

Riccardo's Ristorante - Lake Oswego
Since my original post, I've been back twice for dinner. Both meals were excellent.
Both times I had the sauteed fiddlehead ferns - in a shallot, garlic, paprika, madeira and cream sauce with some toasted hazelnuts tossed in and a few dollops of chevre - as an appetizer.
On the first visit, I chose a pasta special for a main dish: oriecchiette tossed with garlic, bread crumbs, broccoli rabe (rapini), and a touch of anchovy. On the second visit (this week), I chose one of the fish specials: arctic char with a garlic, onion, caper, and sweet pepper relish.
The back patio was open and the heater lamps were fired up, providing a great way to experience some late day sunshine in comfort. Great service and nice wines by the glass (had some gavi and brunello).
Highly recommended.
