3% healthcare charge: coming to more receipts near you

latindancer, when did I ever say you, specifically, are giving the servers grief?

Clearly this topic rankles you to no end - you're posts are littered all over this thread. So, don't go.

My general point remains: getting one's knickers in a twist over this seems like such a colossal and exhausting waste of mental energy.

Again, if this bothers anyone, don't go. But if one does go, for goodness sake don't take your ire out on the server.

I'm really scratching my head at why think my post was directed specifically at you.

Epicure imports sale September 12 & 13

So glad I remembered to come to this. I've been off CH for a few weeks, though thanks to Carter's post in a thread a few months ago I'd marked down this weekend.

Such a great selection, and I stocked up on the Echire, along with many other products.

Next sale is, I believe, in late-mid October (19th?)

The hue and cry in this thread baffles me.

I guess I understand "taking a stand" on principle and not patronizing these restaurants (though not really).

But if you're going to go, don't give the servers grief. It's 3% for Christ's sake. If that's going to break the bank, simply don't go.

Maude Reservations for Tomorrow

I so wish I could take this, but 5:30 is just far too early for me.

Where to "wow" a visitor with "do NOT miss this place" recommendations

"The LA food press was paid off to promote that place."

That's a weighty accusation to throw around; citation?

Oh kevin.

1) that's two words

2) I'm afraid the lucidity and, dare I say, eloquence in your review has given you away.

Right??????????????????

I love corn. Love. As in, L-O-V-E.

If I went in to Maude specifically for that ingredient - which I am hoping to sneak in one night this month (whenever it actually starts) - and was never told about the change (either in phone confirmation or by the host/ess upon being greeted/seated), I'd have pitched an outright "bitch fit".

You cannot have an "Iron Chef" themed restaurant, boast about the "Secret Ingredient of the Month" (SIOTM), and then pull the rug out from under me. Well, you *can*, but I'd most likely have walked out.

Fuck. That.

Gentrification of Los Angeles Chinatown Continues--Little Jewel

As an LA (not L.A.) native, I am eagerly awaiting this.

Aside from our kitchen, I've yet to find any Creole/Cajun place worth even a plugged nickel.

Petit Trois, No Reservations, No Phone, No Cash & No tipping...

I'm one of the most price-insensitive people I know, but I staunchly refuse to pay $39 for that Steak Frites. That's just laughable, and it looks like a fucking mess, too.

But I've not slurped the Ludo Kool-Aid. After trying several of his Ludo Bites, as well as eating his cuisine at other food events, I just think he's a lot more Krissy than Ludo - i.e. more sizzle than steak.

I will give Trois Mec a try at some point, I guess, but I'm not in a rush.

Lastly, that Millefeuille looks yawn-inducing. Nothing like the one at Genin (pic) in 15er. And that Tarte Citron was life changing.

But I digress ...

Soooo, $0.30 is NOT the price of the bag?

Color me confused, and I'll just leave it at that.

Best Donut, Los Angeles

"there's an argument that a donut is just a donut, that they all are merely passable."

Sure ... but not here on CH, where we are all fanatics and obsessed with the best ;-)

It's always been the evening when I've stopped into Stan's; perhaps I need to swing by first thing in the morning to get them as fresh as possible. Don't know when that would ever be, though, as I've no reason to be in that area.

favorite sushi right now ????? price no object, natch.

Love, Love, LOVED our two (fairly) recent meals at Downtown Zo (pic) and Shunji (lunch at the latter).

While I readily admit I'm not nearly the connoisseur some on this board are (too many to single out), that Shunji lunch premium omakase is IN-SANE. And when you consider the QPR, I mean ... fuhgedabboudit!

Best Donut, Los Angeles

All good my man. That's one of the great things about CH - we can share info without the compulsion to agree on everything.

I'll be honest - I feel like a lot of the beloved donut shops around LA are wildly overrated.

I'm not saying they are not passable donut places, but that most blur one into the next in a miasma of mediocrity.

To get back to Stan's - what do you find so great about it? Whenever I've gotten something there, I always find myself throwing part of it away. It's either the PB is bland, the doughnut itself is tough/dry, or a general "meh"ness to them.

Absolutely agree that Donut Snob (pic 1) is killing it right now. She really knows what she's doing.

Towers above Donut Friend (pics 2 & 3), SK's (pic 4) and the like.

I also love Primos Buttermilk Bars, and Donut Mans Peach & Strawberry.

Find everything at Stan's to be on par with Diddy Reese - that's NOT a compliment.

"For those who don't like the prices then, I guess, stay away and there'll be no need to complain."

This is, basically, what many above have said to the OP (whom, I want to be clear, I really like, based on her other posts).

Yes, I've been to Farmshop. Lovely place, nice products.

And I "get" the bag. Heck, it even seems nice enough - though the site's description is so precious it deserves to be framed and placed front and center in Wes Anderson's next jewel box.

What I don't understand is how maudies5 owns it, shops there, and then is aghast about the $.30 paper bags.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the owning of $68+ grocery bag - for the groceries at Farmshop no less! - and whinging about $.30 bags.

I really don't see what all the fuss is about; if it rankles you that much, simply avoid going.

But then, I'm a principled grudge holder of the highest order.

GCM is Getting The Best Ice Cream Parlour

Just read this interview with the owner of McConnells, Michael Palmer:

http://www.foodgps.com/interview-mcco...

Maybe it is just my reading, but he seems very marketing/PR/Buzz Word du Jour'ish for me. Maybe "smug" is the right word? I'm not sure, but I definitely did not get the "warm and fuzzies".

Granted my samplings so far have been limited, but I'm not quite sure his product is as good as he thinks it is.

Nevertheless, I do like the addition to GCM ... that place is turning into a one-stop guarantee of gaining 5lbs+

Spark Studio City closing July 20 @ 10pm

Probably to be replaced by yet another gastro pub-y concept.

I've no information on this, just seems to be the concept du jour on the SC/SO Ventura corridor.

GCM is Getting The Best Ice Cream Parlour

Hmmm. I *think* I tried McConnells in SB, but it was ages ago.

Coincidentally, before getting home last night and seeing this post, I was in Gelsons looking for a frozen treat - as I'd been meaning to try McConnells, I grabbed a couple of pints to bring home and try.

Verdict: ehhhh ... Solid. Fine, though not packing much flavor (true of both the Sweet Cream and the Dark Chocolate Paso Brittle).

Admittedly I've become very spoiled, as my wife will usually churn and pack a few pints every few weeks - typically from the Jeni's, Humphrey Slocombe, and Perfect Scoop books, as well as her own creations.

These are so far and away better than what we typically sample, I've been ruined.

All of this being said, back to McConnells. I'll certainly try them again when next at GCM, with the hope the flavors have a bit more pop.

Sherman Oaks dining 'renaissance' - will it draw Angelenos?

Don't think the Stout Seafood Pub at Ole is happening.

Have seen "For Lease" signs go up recently. Last update I can find is a year or so ago on Eater, so I think it's dead.
