Chi Spacca - New Chef

Sometimes people confuse passion with irrationality.

Nonetheless, I'm glad you enjoy food - as do we all, here! - and hope Colby lands on his feet somewhere so that you may continue feasting with regularity on his cooking.

As for the topic at hand: my one experience at Chi Spacca earlier this year left me satisfied - smiling, even - but far from over the moon.

Jesus dude. Take a breath.

Colby is not god's gift to restaurant-dining mankind. Are you his partner/publicist?

Wolvesmouth dinner - Saturday, July 25

Ang, I didn't catch that - or even know it.

Thanks for enlightening us.

Wolvesmouth dinner - Saturday, July 25

I'm curious as well. Here's a quote directly from their website:

"How much will dinner cost? That's up to you. We don't put a price tag on these meals, so we appreciate whatever donation you'd like to make that fits within your budget and the value of the meal itself. We only use the highest quality ingredients and we put a lot of time and effort into these dinners, so your donations allow us to continue doing these on a regular basis."

La Frite Sherman Oaks -- My Kitchen Nightmare

Do you happen to be affiliated in any way with La Frite?

I ask because you're a first time poster, and your first - and only, thus far - post resurrected a 4 year old thread.

Doesn't bother me, personally, if so - as I said, I'm just curious.

Howlin' Ray's (Nashville-Style) Hot Chicken (A Review and Photo Story)

No, I didn't mean to damn with faint praise.

And you're right, they seem much more patterned after Hattie B's (which is also, like Prince's, better than HR).

I admit, though, that I only had HR during their pop-up at Barrel & Ashes. Sounds like further tweaking is still going on, which is always a good thing — until it's not ;-)

Comfort LA has the best cornbread this side of the Mississippi

As my (very Southern) grandpa would say, "sugar's for cakes".

Sounds like a great dessert more than corn bread. Still, would like to give it a shot.

Howlin' Ray's (Nashville-Style) Hot Chicken (A Review and Photo Story)

I used to live in Nashville. Howlin' Rays, comparatively, is solid ... but it's no Prince's.

That being said, I wish them well. Always nice to have the option here in LA.

Paris help: 2 nights (including Sunday) with an unadventurous eater

I will be in Paris this Saturday and Sunday, and am wracking my brains for where to eat each evening.

As the title states, this will be with a less than adventurous eater, so perhaps a great bistro where I can get something quite scrumptious and that would have a good steak frites for my guest?

Also, I'll be taking him around town to see the sites, and sample some pastries. Jacques Genin for sure, along with Pierre Herme - any other thoughts?

Maybe Breizh for another option?

Help, please!?!

Merci.

Thumbs down on brunch at Taco Maria

Wow!

We were there at the same time, and had a completely different experience. We had everything, and thought it all fantastic.

I hate that you missed the parfait - it was outstanding. As was the oatmeal.

I'm also scratching my head at the sweetness in the Pescador, and wondering if something happened with yours. Neither my wife nor myself felt that way at all.

But then again, I'm not a brunch lover in general, so perhaps had tempered my expectations. We both would return in a heartbeat. Really looking forward to trying them for dinner.

Anniversary dinner: Osteria Mozza or A.O.C.?

I think this is a fantastic summation of the two, so, if you're only considering these, I would go by this for reference.

Enjoy either way, and Happy Anniversary!

L.A. Lays a Goose Egg at the James Beard Awards 2015

I have no problems with this. It's not like LA has never had a Beard winner.

I greatly enjoy the wondrous, myriad options we have here in LA. And, yes, these are at least partially biased to NYC (at the least).

But, to quickly go over the ones where an LA chef was nominated (based on this Eater link: http://www.eater.com/2015/5/1/8524515...):

- Best New Restaurant: no chance in hell Ludo & Shook/Dotolo deserved to beat out literally any other option in this list. Not for Petit Trois.

- Outstanding Chef: Don't think Goin deserved it, but I would've chosen Link over Anthony. Not too bothered with the result, though.

- Outstanding Pastry Chef: This should've been Tosi's a few years ago, though she is till deserving. What she has done for the pastry world has rippled throughout the country - and further.

- Outstanding Wine Program: Spago is a dinosaur, with the appropriate and accompanying wine list. Very deep, but safe.

- Rising Star Chef: The one where I would feel, if I cared at all, LA had the best shot. Still, can't hate on what Largey is doing at Manresa.

- Best Chef (West): Any of the three not from LA I would choose over the ones here - and I love Animal. I guess Accarrino might've been nice, given his stint at Craft here years ago, but SBP and Benu are both far ahead of the others.

tl;dr - No big deal. The wheel turns ...

What are some over-rated L.A. restaurants to you? Why, specifically? Only one each!

For what? That's like asking me what are my top three choices for places to visit on holiday.

When asked, I usually try and tailor my response towards the individual's interests/tastes.

And as ipse notes above - I'm not saying some/all of these places are not good (whatever that means), just that they're overrated.

Ha, that may be true. But I enjoy going out, what can I say?

And, typically, I feel very well treated. Have been fortunate to have some amazing experiences and meals.

I'll play. And I'm not limiting myself to just one.

These are in no particular order, and I'm sure I'm missing some ...

In N Out
Apple Pan
Melisse
Providence
Sweet Lady Jane
Donut Man
Bob's
Henry's Tacos
AOC
SOAG
Anything Ludo
Bestia
Factory Kitchen
Chengdu
Chinois
Sweet Rose
Guerrilla Tacos
Anything Roy Choi

... and as I said, I'm sure I'm forgetting more than a few.

Red Medicine Announces It Will Close at the End of October

IIRC, maudies5 really promotes this every year.

I do not mean to imply she has any connection with this, and it does sound like a wonderful - and wonderfully beneficial - event.

I guess my point is she's clearly a fan, and I do not believe her intent is to indict any non-participatory chefs as crap.

latindancer, when did I ever say you, specifically, are giving the servers grief?

Clearly this topic rankles you to no end - you're posts are littered all over this thread. So, don't go.

My general point remains: getting one's knickers in a twist over this seems like such a colossal and exhausting waste of mental energy.

Again, if this bothers anyone, don't go. But if one does go, for goodness sake don't take your ire out on the server.

I'm really scratching my head at why think my post was directed specifically at you.

Epicure imports sale September 12 & 13

So glad I remembered to come to this. I've been off CH for a few weeks, though thanks to Carter's post in a thread a few months ago I'd marked down this weekend.

Such a great selection, and I stocked up on the Echire, along with many other products.

Next sale is, I believe, in late-mid October (19th?)

3% healthcare charge: coming to more receipts near you

The hue and cry in this thread baffles me.

I guess I understand "taking a stand" on principle and not patronizing these restaurants (though not really).

But if you're going to go, don't give the servers grief. It's 3% for Christ's sake. If that's going to break the bank, simply don't go.
