Seems like an absolutely rocking deal. If anyone learns more - i.e. about Tetsuya-san deciding to continue the offering - please do let the rest of us know.

Ha! Better way to keep those post-lunch meetings short, though.

FARMSHOP charging .30 for paper bag. Every other market in area charging 10 cents

Yes, I've been to Farmshop. Lovely place, nice products.

And I "get" the bag. Heck, it even seems nice enough - though the site's description is so precious it deserves to be framed and placed front and center in Wes Anderson's next jewel box.

What I don't understand is how maudies5 owns it, shops there, and then is aghast about the $.30 paper bags.

FARMSHOP charging .30 for paper bag. Every other market in area charging 10 cents

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the owning of $68+ grocery bag - for the groceries at Farmshop no less! - and whinging about $.30 bags.

I really don't see what all the fuss is about; if it rankles you that much, simply avoid going.

But then, I'm a principled grudge holder of the highest order.

GCM is Getting The Best Ice Cream Parlour

Just read this interview with the owner of McConnells, Michael Palmer:

http://www.foodgps.com/interview-mcco...

Maybe it is just my reading, but he seems very marketing/PR/Buzz Word du Jour'ish for me. Maybe "smug" is the right word? I'm not sure, but I definitely did not get the "warm and fuzzies".

Granted my samplings so far have been limited, but I'm not quite sure his product is as good as he thinks it is.

Nevertheless, I do like the addition to GCM ... that place is turning into a one-stop guarantee of gaining 5lbs+

Spark Studio City closing July 20 @ 10pm

Probably to be replaced by yet another gastro pub-y concept.

I've no information on this, just seems to be the concept du jour on the SC/SO Ventura corridor.

GCM is Getting The Best Ice Cream Parlour

Hmmm. I *think* I tried McConnells in SB, but it was ages ago.

Coincidentally, before getting home last night and seeing this post, I was in Gelsons looking for a frozen treat - as I'd been meaning to try McConnells, I grabbed a couple of pints to bring home and try.

Verdict: ehhhh ... Solid. Fine, though not packing much flavor (true of both the Sweet Cream and the Dark Chocolate Paso Brittle).

Admittedly I've become very spoiled, as my wife will usually churn and pack a few pints every few weeks - typically from the Jeni's, Humphrey Slocombe, and Perfect Scoop books, as well as her own creations.

These are so far and away better than what we typically sample, I've been ruined.

All of this being said, back to McConnells. I'll certainly try them again when next at GCM, with the hope the flavors have a bit more pop.

Sherman Oaks dining 'renaissance' - will it draw Angelenos?

Don't think the Stout Seafood Pub at Ole is happening.

Have seen "For Lease" signs go up recently. Last update I can find is a year or so ago on Eater, so I think it's dead.

Factory Kitchen this week (longish!)

I agree. Though we did not have the same rushed experience - I chalk this up to a weeknight/weekend difference - I do not see any compelling reason to choose FK over other, better Italian spots in LA (e.g. Bucato, Sotto, etc)

Best Ice Cream Parlor in LA (like Farrells used to be)

Oh, I agree, Bulavinaka. They seem to be doing just fine, and more power (and success) to them.

I guess being a non-native - I know, I know, shocker! - I don't have the nostalgia-tinged tastebuds that make Fosselman's so desirable.

Best Ice Cream Parlor in LA (like Farrells used to be)

I must be the only one who finds Fosselman's to be sub-par ice cream.

Maybe the first time I tried it I found it interesting or likable, but every time since it's been yawn-inducing.

The last time there we all threw away what we'd ordered.

So much easier to make much higher quality ice cream at home.

Monday Lunch

I apologize for the long delay in reporting back. I wanted to complete my road-trip first.

So, that being said, on to the details.

We ended up going to Hattie's, with additional stops at both Lockhart and Dude, Sweet - thankfully open, as foiegras helpfully pointed out above.

At Hatties, we tried a Cup of Tomato Soup, the Fried Chicken, and the Shrimp & Grits (photos attached). I also had a Lucky Limeade.

The tomato soup was quite nice, with a small touch of smokiness to help cut through the richness (I assume cream is one of the ingredients). The attached "Grilled Cheese" was cute, though not particularly notable -- more for show/presentation, I think, than anything else.

The Fried Chicken and Shrimp & Grits were both solidly good, though far from the best preparations I've had of either.

The Chicken dish (especially the potatoes) lacked that final touch of seasoning to give it that nice "oomph". Too, the batter/frying was not as crisp as I would like -- and, in general, I'm a believer fried chicken should be on the bone.

The Shrimp & Grits suffered by the inclusion of the goat cheese, as well as an overcooked grit cake. I knew the dish had goat cheese - and even thought it might be an interesting spin - but unfortunately the particular one used had too much tanginess, which overwhelmed the (well-cooked) shrimp and jus/gravy. This certainly was not bad, by any stretch, but I'd rate it as solid/fine (i.e. 3/5).

My drink was well-composed, though seemed a bit light on the alcohol. And our server, though nice, was mediocre at best.

Still, I don't think one would be disappointed in eating here - I just would not say one NEEDS to eat here.

After Hatties we walked around the corner to Dude, Sweet. We ended up being helped by Katherine Clapner, who is charming, energetic, and incredibly knowledgeable about her craft.

The shop is cute, and I really dig the way they have it set up. And the chocolates! I had to stop myself before spending crazy $$$. Though I wanted much, MUCH more, we ended up walking out with the following:

2 Bars: Praline and Red Hot Thinnamon (one of the best bars I've had in quite awhile … I seriously loved this, though I have a thing for cinnamon).

Soraya Toffee, which is almost more like a fudge, and so, SO crave-able.

And FDA Chocolate Salami, which was so perfect for a road trip with active stops. Almost like a fruit bar, it's got figs (F), medjool dates (D), marzipan (A), cocoa nibs and 72% chocolate. It's not overly sweet, and again is like the world's most delicious fruit bar (with hints of chocolate).

I'll definitely be getting some more Dude, Sweet, either from our next stop in DFW, or online, or from wherever.

After Dude, Sweet, we walked over to Lockhart Smokehouse to grab some for the road. We got Brisket, Jalapeño Sausage, and sides of Beans and Mac & Cheese.

We actually ended up eating the brisket over the course of three different times, so that provided an interesting look at it for me.

First, I sampled some immediately, so as to try it fresh. I'll digress for a moment and say that I grew up visiting the temples in Hill Country when I would visit family, so I feel I have somewhat picky/high standards.

That being said, my first taste left me feeling - at least on this particular Monday - underwhelmed. It had a nice smoke, but lord was it far too juicy for my tastes. Almost wet. And outside of tasting the smoke (and admittedly a nice "crust"), I felt it fairly bland.

We next ate it hours later (though having kept it in a cooler during the drive) for dinner, along with the rest of our order. Here we both agreed it to be better, though still not anything noteworthy. In fact, we FAR more enjoyed the sausages AND the sides.

Maybe they just scratched an itch at the moment, but I actually found these sides to be some of the best from any Texas BBQ place we've tried. I'm not saying they're amazing, but they really hit the spot. And that sausage was fantastic! Not overly dry - despite the car ride - and richly flavorful … I wish I had some right now!

The last time we at the brisket was for lunch the next day - having kept it refrigerated overnight and then in the cooler during our drive - and here it was the best! Perhaps it was from our being so hungry from hiking, or that having sat the flavors all melded together, or maybe putting it on some fresh bread with just a shmear of mayo … or probably all of the above. But here it really hit the spot, with the right amount of smoke and toothsomeness.

Thanks to all for the help, and I hope this report is helpful to others.

LA not mentioned as a good city for foodies

Probably items labeled "tacos". That opens the door to the world of wonder that is Taco Bell!

And for fun, I'll throw in Haynesville, LA - where can I find great tacos there?

Monday Lunch

I'll be driving through the DFW area tomorrow around lunch time, and am trying to figure out where to stop for lunch.

My immediate thought and wish - Pecan Lodge. Alas, they're closed.

Am debating between the following: Hattie's, Babes, Lockhart, Slow Bone, ???

Also planning on potentially swinging by Dude, Sweet for some chocolates for the road.

As I'll be spending the next few days driving around the SW, I'm not particularly fussed with Tex-Mex/Mexican/New Mexican/etc -- I'll have a few days to get that out of my system.

And I'm not particularly interested in any SE Asian, Sushi, South/Central American as I live in LA and we have those in spades.

Lastly, grew up in Louisiana, so no need for any Cajun/Creole.

Not trying to be too picky or snobbish ... just have one meal and am looking for something delicious I will have a hard time getting elsewhere.

I'm ticked I chose a Monday and can't hit PL. C'est la vie ...

Bucato

Went back and had yet another fantastic meal.

Still cannot bring myself to move past the pastas and into the mains ... one day, one day.

Aside from the usual highlights, we also tried the Squash Blossoms, which were fantastic. Perfectly fried, light and crispy, and not greasy at all.

We also had the meatballs, which while tasty have probably been the item I've enjoyed the least.

Still, all in all another fantastic meal.

I was also told that they plan on covering the front patio. I'm curious to see if this will impact their reservations process, as the website chalks the "same day only" current system up to the vagaries of weather.
