Handsome Coffee Roasters -I really liked it.
Yes, this is to what I was referring in my post.
Handsome Coffee Roasters -I really liked it.
I echo these sentiments (with the exception of the filter, as I did not try it).
We were there this weekend and came away thoroughly impressed, both by the coffee and the space.
Tip: We brought a couple donuts from our lunch at Nickel, and they were PERFECT accompaniments! I especially recommend that Strawberry donut (nothing like TDM's).
Is the Apple Pan Worth a Visit
Have to agree; I absolutely fail to see why this place is so revered. Perhaps I'd feel differently if I grew up out here.
Burgers are solid/good, fries are "meh", and every time I've had a slice of pie I've ended up chucking the majority of it.
Where to find Freeze Dried Corn
Doh! Thanks. My brain is clearly not working today.
Not that today is any different from other days! ;-)
Where to find Freeze Dried Corn
Yessir, that's exactly what it is for. Never even crossed my mind to check out a camping store, though I guess it should have. Know of any (esp. in SO/Studio City)?
Where to find Freeze Dried Corn
Need some for a recipe, and can't seem to find it anywhere ... tried several WFs and TJs.
Jeni's ice cream, now in Bristol Farms, Silverlake
But they DO contain tapioca starch, right?
Red Medicine/Sotto?
Maybe I didn't order the right things. I'm trying to remember what we had off the top of my head ... let's see, I know we had the bread with lardo, which is very tasty. We had the peppers, which were good but those can be had many a place (including home). The meatballs were good, too.
We also had the Casarecce, and to be honest I much prefer the pasta at Mozza, and even what I make at home. And lastly, the only pizza we tried was the Margherita, because it's my baseline for pizza (especially of the Napoletana style, though I realize strictly speaking Sottos is not). That I found to be absolutely mediocre -- too doughy (and I mean that literally), poor rationing of ingredients, and their sauce simply does not work for me.
I will say cocktails are very, very good there ... I feel like I'd read complaints about their size before going, but all the ones we tried were served in standard coupes, so I'm not sure why the nattering.
Anyway, it's not like I wouldn't return ... but as we do a fair amount of cooking at home, my nights dining out are prized, and I would much, much rather return to RM than Sotto. That being said, I'd have nary a complaint if friends wanted to go -- we'd happily join them and have a good meal.
Red Medicine/Sotto?
Curious what you find challenging about Red Medicine?
And I feel like I've really missed the Sotto experience ... from my one visit they didn't do a single thing that I couldn't find better elsewhere.
Red Medicine/Sotto?
I've eaten at both recently and was blown away by Red Medicine, whereas Sotto left me thinking solid/good, but nothing special.

I swear you really are my chow doppelgänger
NEED ADVICE - Lucques, Hatfield's, Osteria Mozza or ?
I co-sign everything ips said.
Definitely consider Animal and Red Medicine ... both are fantastic. Also, there's a veritable treasure trove of ethnic dining here that shames NYC, from the variety of regional Mexican places to loads of regional Chinese in the SGV, and on and on

Thanks for the report.
I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but am I the only one who finds the whole LudoBites phenomenon head-scratchingly overrated?
I've been to LB a couple times now (caveat, not the one from this review), tried the fried chicken, and on the whole have to say I've rarely been impressed, much less blown away.
Sure, there are some interesting techniques and ingredient pairings, but I've yet to have a single bite that made me pause while my eyes widened in stunned amazement.
I dunno ... could just be me. I will say he's obviously harnessed an excellent business strategy and the power of exclusivity. Doesn't hurt he's good looking and French, and has a lovely wife as well
St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake?
It can be ordered for takeout - I've done it a time or two - but it is NOTHING like a classic Midwestern gooey butter cake.
St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake?
Why not make one yourself? It's not that difficult, and there are loads of recipes to be found online
Keith Gilabert: Sisley Italian Kitchen is Exceptional fresh homemade Italian Done Right.
Is this the same Sisley that has a location in Sherman Oaks right by the Galleria?
I've never bothered, but if it's that good ...
Red Medicine. Wow.
Of course! Also, it's not like the restaurant was empty that night, so I really hope it works for your catch up. You might want to make a specific request, though, to sit back there ... and we had the corner spot, too, so only people on one side of us and then behind in the open floor. That might've helped, just FYI.
Red Medicine. Wow.
My wife and I had a two top in the back up against the kitchen wall for an 8p res on a Saturday night and had absolutely no problems with the noise, or hearing one another.
That's not to say it is a library by any stretch, but it's not thunderously deafening like Comme Ca.
Red Medicine. Wow.
Ate at both in the past few weeks, and without a doubt I'd recommend Red Medicine over Sotto. We were really, really impressed with the former, and left thinking Sotto is solidly good, but not special.
Visiting from NYC - what's the "best" of the things that aren't great here?
I went the other night for the first time (SaMo), and don't remember the food being bad at all ... granted, I had 5 or 6 margaritas, so it's probably more accurate to say I don't really remember anything at all.
It wasn't my choice, but my wife has confirmed my suspicion that it was NOT good. So yeah, I'd skip El Cholo, unless you want to get absolutely pissed. Then the foods not so bad!

Second Red Medicine. And for the record, I adore both EMP and the Momofukus.

Agreed ... no point in going to Providence when you have perhaps the best high end seafood-centric restaurant on America in your back yard.
In fact we were just at Providence the other night, and aside from a revelatory scallop I wasn't particularly blown away by anything else.
Where delicious in/near Beverly Hills (neither foo-foo nor dive) to take visiting foodie friend for dinner?
Also on the good part, though perhaps that's just me. I was less than impressed when there last week.

I think he meant precious, and meant it as not wanting something overwrought or needlessly complicated just for the sake of being "cutesy".
Forbes Top Restaurants in the US?
This I can definitely agree with. Coi left me scratching my head in a sort of "emperors new clothes" kind of way. My wife and I both left wondering what on Earth we missed, given the raves of so many others.
I think you summed it up perfectly -- "interesting, experimental, unusual but failed to tweak my culinary monkeybone in terms of taste".
