Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 1st quarter 2012 [old]

New for Q1 and definite YAY: Fresh Mozzarella String Cheese. Found this when looking for the original TJ's string cheese that i usually buy. The fresh mozz ones are now on my regular shopping list.

I shop at 6th ave/21st st location and here are my go-to's for items only available at TJ's:

FAVES: frozen chicken quesadillas (minute and a half in micro, then couple minutes on grill pan - perfect!) frozen turkey meatballs, tomatoless corn salsa (great on the frozen crabcakes), jalepeno cheese doodles, sweet/salty peanut trail mix, light kettle corn popcorn, frozen french onion soup, and lastly - PB granola bars (the ones in the orange box).

FAIL: frozen meatloaf potato muffins (should've known by the name of these that they'd be atrocious),

Spanish Food in Lower Manhattan 30s-LES

La Nacional on 14th st between 7th and 8th aves. They have the most authentic paella that i've had in the city. Also for appetizers, the garlic shrimp is fantastic!

What are your favorites at Gramercy Tavern? Birthday dinner there tonight!

gotcha, sorry about that...all i had in the tavern room were the toasted pecans with dried fruit with a glass of wine while waiting to be seated...they were delicious:)

What are your favorites at Gramercy Tavern? Birthday dinner there tonight!

i was just there this past saturday for my birthday...

we did the 3-course dinner - i started with the black ink tagliatelli with mussels, lobster and calamari in a red sauce for my first course. It was truly amazing and i highly recommend it. For second course, i had the grilled sirloin/ braised flat iron dish and my boyfriend had the pork belly/pork tenderloin dish - you'd be very pleased with both of these. The pork belly was especially delicious. For wine, our server paired everything for us and he was truly knowlegable and made excellent choices. You can certainly trust the staff. Oh and dessert - peanut butter semifreddo and tapioca pudding were both delectable.

Have a happy birthday!

need rustic northern italian reco for birthday dinner for huge hound!

Hey guys, i have to make a reservation for my boyfriend's birthday. it just for the 2 of us. He's a big foodie (although prefers being called a "hound") and his favorite cuisine is italian - and for this dinner, im thinking rustic northern italian would be best.

Some of his favorites are perbacco, crispo, babbo…he’s been to a lot of restaurants so im struggling to find a hidden gem comparable to any of the above mentioned places that he hasnt yet been to. Reco’s should include restaurants with extensive wine lists. He’s big into pairings.

Thanks!!

Traveling to Houston from NY - need reco's

I'll be in what i believe is referred to "west loop" or to clarify, by the houston galleria. After reading posts, it seems Pierson & Co is the way to go, but i may be looking for a spot a little more trendy and in a lively neighborhood with some nightlife. Does that help narrow down my options?

Tony's Di Napoli on the UES. Great family style italian thats reasonably priced. With wine, it could be $50/person. Theres one in times square but the UES location has a better crowd, and also has outdoor seating. Its on 83rd and 2nd.

best margarita to drink outside

Thanks for all the suggestions, i actually ended up at The Yard (at the Soho Grand). It was a great backyard and it was a bit pricey, but totally worth it, they had fans and misters, which was necessary at 95 degrees, and the margaritas were HUGE. They also had great guacamole!!
