Visiting Austin - Need Recommendations

If you have a rental car, I highly recommend Hudson on the Bend. It is about ten to twenty miles outside of Austin, and it is a beautiful drive there, especially if you take FM 2222- it winds through the Hill Country, and the food is to die for. While you are here, if you enjoy wine, you might want to consider a winery tour also. Welcome!

GOOD EATS NEAR TRANSPLANT CENTER (SA)

Hello from Austin! I will be making weekly trips to San Antonio to vist the UT transplant center for tests. Any good suggestions for local places close to the hospital? (Within a ten minute drive) All prices, breakfast lunch and dinner ideas are appreciated. We have been sticking to the chains, and that gets old pretty fast. I especially enjoy ethnic cusine - Italian, Thai, etc and those mom and pop gems that only the locals seem to know about. Thanks in advace!

Disabled diner

THanks! Houstons is good idea - I have always had great service there.....but I have eaten my way through their menu many times over. (We used to lunch there at least once a week). I think I will keep that as my back up though - thank you for your help!

Disabled diner

Now I have really done it. I fell and broke several bones, including me knee and leg, so I am in a wheelcnair for at least tnree months. I enjoy fine dining, but am finding it difficult to find restaurants that can accomadate disahlities.
Sure, they may have a handicapped ramp - but you get seated in the dead zone. I also cannot wear shoes for a month or so, but I do wear socks, and the health department tells me that is ok. The waitperson often treats me as if I must not be able to afford the place/tip well, etc - even though I dress as before the accident. I often dine alone, it seems to be betterr when I am with a group. Does anyone know of a place that is especialy accomadating to disabled diners. I like all knids of food, and differet price ranges. Thanks!

Ladies who lunch...

It will be only the two of us...neither veggies....although we do like them! I am just stumped because the better places are closed on Sat at lunch. One of us.....ok, me - is about to go through major surgery - and I want to have a nice memory of this meal. We have a tradition of Saturday lunches -but usually at places like Houstons or McCormicks....and before I have to give up good food for a while I wanted to go out with a bang! Thanks for the input!

Ladies who lunch...

I am going for a celebration lunch (milestone sort of thing) with a friend on Saturday. I woul love if y'all could give me any ideas for where to go. I am a lifetime Austinite, but I am drawing a blank for lunches....dinner would be easier. The idea place would be comfortable without being stuffy, have an adequate wine list, and of course, great food. North Austin or Central preferred. Price is not an problem for this special day. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hudson's on the Bend

Recently (I am not sure if they still have it - you can call and ask) - they had a tasting menu that was great! This is one of my favorite places in Austin - I envy you your gift!

Cover 2,3? whatever

I have to agree with gvilletransplant. I am a woman (hear me roar) - and I am not a sports fan - BUT - this place is pleasant, with great service. The food is good, and we do not have many options in Northwest Austin (without getting on 183) to dine. I have gone there four times now, three times with just other girlfriends....the sports part is not over whelming, and the waitresses were always great. (Does not always happen - a lot of times waitpeople assume women will not tip - and we do - we ROCK....used to be waitpeople ourselves!)

Chitown Foodie's Annual Pilgrimage to Austin

Because of the economy....things here too, are sad, food wise. That being said, I would at least try Vespaios. They are consistent, and willing to try off the menu, in my experience...so if you do not like what is on the menu, just ask.

What about driving out to the Llano/Marble Falls area and trying places out there?
The Bluebonnet Cafe is an old (well, as old as I am, and that is OLD) place that is not fine dining, but has great country style food. There are several great BBQ places out there as well.

First time in Austin - for 5 days? Where to dine?

I am sure that everyone is in a holiday stupor right now - or you should of received some replies already. Question: where are you coming from? That would make a difference in suggestions....

They Want HOW MUCH?

I am the most shocked at wine lists prices. I was amazed at the Old Castle Hill - new Mexican place last week. Part of that is being a (very) old Austinite - I just can't see paying premium prices for Mexican food. (We do have a strong Fonda San Miguel contigent in the house though...). Thirteen dollars for a breakfast taco and coffee? I would of been screaming also!

Work Colleague Visiting Austin This Week

...since she will be right "there" -she should definitely hit the Roaring Forks HH menu!

Mesa Ranch on Mesa

I have to agree with exlnghrn. We were very excited when Mesa Ranch opened up - there are not that many restaurants in NW Hills, and we like to eat close to home, but we have dropped it off our list of places to go. The service was spotty, and the one time we had a complaint about a dish (it contained an ingredient that I am severely allergic to, and the server was duly forewarned) the attitude we received from both the server and the manager (owner?) - was about the same- rude and unapologitic. They even CHARGED us for the dish, even though it went uneaten. That being said, I did really like their bar, and the singer - it was a comfy neighborhood kind of place.

Headin' Out to Ausin (First Time in TX)

I logged on too late to be much of a help, but I am so glad that you had a good trip here! We *are* nice, and not in a creepy way. Please let us locals know if any other places impressed you...and come back soon.

Ceviche Freak

I liked Manuels, until they started getting skimpy on the ingredients. Fonda San Miguel, YUM, but who can afford that on an odd weekday night for a take a way? I will try out y'alls other suggestions!

North - The Domain

Paulaustex - I agree with you about the Osso Buco. I used to live across from IBM, and I agree about it not being an eyesore - I think the writer was thinking more of the Braker (Arbor Walk) area - which is just a hair away. I LOVE the zuchinni chips, but I only go to the Domain places either very early or very late, as parking/waits are a problem. We (in out forties/sixties) do not do well waiting for over a hour for a table...there are too many great options in Austin. Just my opinion!

Clueless about fudge

Steph,

Thanks so much for the input! I am going to do both - go to WF tmw (I live in Northwest Hills so the 183 locale is pretty close) AND try to make some. I will let y'all know my triumphs, or failures.....he has been with me through a really tough time, and I want his birthday (Sat) to be special! We are going to Trulucks for dinner - not my fave, but his....so hopefully we will have some nice seafood, then, FUDGE!

Pretheater Happy Hour

I am attending a performance at Zach next week, and need new ideas for a happy hour spot. I moved to north Austin about four years ago, so I am not as attuned to South Austin/Barton Springs area as I should be as a native South Austinite. (Traitor)! The most important thing (besides the food) is parking - it should be free, (or tip only) and very accessible, as we have handicapped members of the family. Any new ideas would be appreciated!

trip to Austin - need restaurant recommendations

Okay, here goes (I am a life long Austinite, and have tried to eat my way across town)! Winks, Hudson on the Bend, Fonda San Miguel, Uchis, Vespaios, Starlite, and Mirabelles. (great afffordable wine list for the last one). Have fun!

Clueless about fudge

Thanks Donko....is Guadalupe still messed up with construction - do you know? I switched cars with my BFF, and am driving a massive tank around town, as he drives more miles and my car is the better deal gas wise - so I am a nervous driver!

Clueless about fudge

I was worried about the weather too...I remember my grandmother not making fudge or divinity (spelling!) - in the heat or when it rained, although I do not know the scientific reasoning for all of that...thanks!

Lunch

I know we are asking lots of questions, but it is hard to pin down what you are looking for. Do you want them to have an "Austin" experience - or just good food? One more question to throw out there. That being said - how about Hoovers, El Chilies, Fonda San Miguels? I think they all have web sites you can check out.

Clueless about fudge

Thanks Steph for your fearless willingness to go forward to find great fudge. I appreciate everyones inputs - thank you!

Clueless about fudge

My BFF has told me that he LOVES fudge - without nuts. I am pretty clueless about sweets - I am more of a savory kind of gal. Any idea where I can buy some fudge - a candy store/ bakery - that is stellar? All input is very appreciated - as his birthday is within a few days!

Best Margaritas in Central Austin?

I do not know if this is central enough for you...but try Jorges on Hancock. (Right off Mopac). Ask them to make it handmade. Enough said!

40th Birthday Dinner

How about Hudsons on the Bend? It has enough "manly" food - not "precious" - although I LOVE that term....and it also has the benefit of a nice drive out to relax and enjoy. It is where I take my man (who is in the same club as your husband) - and he loves it!

Wedding Day lunch with Family

Mercury Hall is a great location for a wedding....and you probably want to stay south. I am pretty much stuck north now, but I was thinking that the new Spanish place at the Y might be nice. (Some other poster will have to provide the name, I cannot remember it now). Or how about the Salt Lick...you have the creek (if it is running) and the grounds so that the kids could run around. A litle more elegant, but still nice (and around the South/Driftwood area) is Tratteria Lisina. (Forgive me for the spelling)! It is owned by the same guys that own Mandolas Italian Market in the Triangle.

Lunch

I agreee that more info would be useful. One place that pops into my mind is the Roaring Fork. The food is decent, and out of town guests like the Capitol/Congress Ave. view from outside. Right along that same alley is the Stephen F Austin upstairs bar. (outside). What part of Austin will they be staying in? I just mentioned downtown options, because my suggestions would be very different for guests staying in North or South Austin.

Where to go for an elegant birthday meal?

I have found Green Pastures to be very friendly with family get togethers, and it is quite elegant. I will try to think of some more suggestions....sounds like a wonderful time!

Seniors: Nice discount found

I know that the TGIF chain offers smaller portions. Also, we have found that many fine dining venues (for example, last week it was Trulucks) will let you split a portion and have an elegant repast for a fraction of the costs. The portions were huge - and it was more than enough for the two of us whenever we go there. I am all for low priced lunches - but sometimes you want to splurge! I look forward to finding out about other discounts.
