Best Restaurants in Philly for a gift

I was just at Bibou this weekend, and 2 apps, 2 entrees, 2 desserts, and 2 coffees came to $120 with tax and tip.

And while there are no vegetarian entrees, we saw a woman at a nearby table be served a vegetarian plate made specially for her (I do not know if they had called ahead or simply mentioned it when they arrived). It appeared to be an assortment of many of the sides/accompaniments to the other dishes, with maybe something else thrown in. She seemed to LOVE it.

Drafting Room Brunch

Brunch at the Drafting Room is fine. I personally don't go to buffets that often as I end up eating way too much, but there is a nice variety there.

A little while back I met a friend at Zake's Cakes in Ft. Washington for brunch, and it was fabulous! We needed something in between Philly and Lansdale on the R5, and it was a perfect choice. The food is always excellent there, and the prices very reasonable. I had pancakes with raspberry and lemon that were delicious. It's also a great lunch spot. (I've never been for dinner, but at least earlier in the summer they were advertising an early/mid-week prix fixe.)

What to order at Allison Two?

I don't recall the exact times, but during the week, the food at the bar is half-price during Happy Hour (I think before 6 or 6:30pm). Definitely a great deal!

DeTerra Wine Bar - all I can say is wow!

I actually thought the place had "a woman's touch" since the designer was actually considerate enough to put hooks under the bar for my purse! (It's always the first thing I check for at a new place -- I live in Brooklyn, and not too many NYC places have caught onto this yet!)

I was there on Wednesday night, and it was ridiculously loud. It was better once we were seated at a booth behind the bar, but when we were at the bar, I had a horrible time hearing the person I was with.

I found the food pretty good (we had apps only), but the wine list severely limited. I was overwhelmed by the number of California Chardonnays....there are other white wines!

The elusive fried oyster

Just this week my mom ordered fried oysters at Alison2 in Ft. Washington. Apparently she's hated oysters since a bad experience with them on the half-shell at Walt's over 30 years ago, but she went for it, and she LOVED them. Has been talking about them ever since. They were on the bar menu, which I know changes, so you may want to call ahead to see if they have them.

I saw them, and they were definitely bigger than a quarter!

Thanks to all the Asheville Folks!

I've been meaning to post this for a couple months. My mom and I took a mini-road trip this summer, and spent 5 great days in Asheville in July. I scoured this board for a couple months leading up to our trip for ideas of where to eat, and I have to thank all of you for your great suggestions. (My mom lives near Philadelphia and I'm in Brooklyn, NY -- we take a trip together every year, usually focusing on some combination of food and architecture.)

Our first night in town (after a LONG day of driving), we just popped into town from our B&B and had an amazing dinner at Early Girl. My mom is still talking about the meatloaf, and I had the trout with blackberry-cabernet sauce, which was amazing.

We spent the first two days on the Biltmore Estate, which I didn't see much about on here, but we had two really great meals at the Bistro at the Winery.

Our other culinary experiences included:
Tupelo Honey (best fried green tomatoes and grits EVER)
Cucina 24 (absolutely delicious)
Sante Wine Bar (we had some wine while we waited out some rain -- nice little spot)
Corner Kitchen (for lunch -- great burger!)
Malaprop's (for yummy coffee drinks and muffins)

But, the highlight of our meals was HANDS DOWN 12 Bones. We got take-out on Friday at lunchtime and then took it back to our B&B, where we reheated it for dinner later that night. The ribs (Blueberry Chipotle and Jalapeno Peach) were awesome, I LOVED my pulled pork, and the corn pudding was simply to die for. We also had picked up some great tomatoes at the WNC Farmer's Market (it was Watermelon Day), and polished off the most tender peaches from there for dessert. It was a meal that I will remember for a long long time.

We had such a great trip to Asheville -- it truly is a great little town. I hope to make it back some day!
