Chinese Perfect Bakery -- Panorama City
...This place is a total dump, but they make these "Cream Rolls" that are so delicious. It is like this very crispy filo-ish pastry shaped like a cone and filled with yummy whipped-cream-ish cream. For 75 cents! Every time I'm there I worry they are going to go out of business... let's keep them in business...
romantic spot on the east side?
i thought of cafe stella in sunset junction... other suggestions, please? thanks people!
Lee's Sandwiches Banh Mi Recs
So, I wound up ordering 80 sandwiches from Lee's. They were very professional and had everything wrapped up and labeled so i could distinguish the meat from the veggie sandwiches. Roast Pork is WAY different than Grilled Pork. Their roast pork is gross (in my opinion) and the Grilled Pork was very good. This was a very very easy and cheap way to cater a party...
"Only in San Francisco" Restaurants
ananda fuera.
is that place still in business near civic center?
run by followers of some yogi...?
i used to love that place when i lived in bay area.
torta and bahn mi on the westside
looking for good mexican and vietnamese sandwiches on the west side... any suggestions???
(sorry if this topic already exists, i just cannot figure out how to efficiently search for stuff on chowhound)
cheap wedding cake (doesn't have to be that good)
whoah. i think you just helped me pick out my birthday cake. do i need to order it or do they just have it premade?
cheap wedding cake (doesn't have to be that good)
Thank you to all who responded. Due to sheer ease, I ordered a cake from Albertsons. It was PERFECT... and although I thought I wanted something hokey and ghetto, it was actually pretty decent, and it actually tasted VERY VERY good (as supermarket cakes go). Everyone was like, WOW this is so good. I got whipped cream frosting, white cake, and chocolate filling. The turn around was one day, and the cost was $30. The bride and groom I had to provide myself (you can get them at Michael's crafts, Gloria's cake decorating, etc). Here is a photo. The bride and groom are blocking the pretty-well-executed whipped cream roses.
cheap wedding cake (doesn't have to be that good)
hey,
my brother just eloped without telling anyone and we want to surprise them with a small cheap wedding cake. it doesn't have to be fancy or really that good... this is more of a joke.
anyone have a suggestion of who could have me a little wedding cake by the end of the week??
thanks!
Lee's Sandwiches Banh Mi Recs
dommy, you are talking about the Meatball sandwich at Lee's, right?
Lee's Sandwiches Banh Mi Recs
Hey All,
I'm getting a whole bunch of sandwiches for a party and I'm chosing Lee's Sandwiches in SGV. I agree with a lot of posts saying that they are not the best, but they will be the easiest to deal with because of the volume.
I really like their veggie sandwich, but was not too fond of their roast pork.
Does anyone have a sandwich that they think is excellent or very good?
I'm gonna have to order without tasting, so I would love to hear your experiences.
Scented Geraniums (culinary)
haha, thanks for the suggestions, and for HIGHLIGHTING all the EDIBLE aspects of the post!!
Help me choose a cold cereal!
Rice Krispies!! They now come in organic!! Delicious with fresh fruit like strawberries or blueberries or green apple. My favorite.
Scented Geraniums (culinary)
I was trying to gather info about where to find scented geraniums in Los Angeles, but my initial posting was deleted. Scented geraniums are an INGREDIENT that can be used in FOOD. The leaves of scented geraniums are used in many interesting recipes, including a Geranium-Rose poundcake recipe posted right here on Chowhound. In addition, many recipes in the Chez Pannisse Deserts cookbook use scented-geranium infusions.
So, please do not delete this posting.
I am looking for a nursery that sells scented geraniums in the Los Angeles area, someone who sells a wide variety such as Rose, Ginger, Coconut, etc. Any info is appreciated!
Philips BBQ is totally over-rated
OK, I will go back and try Philips again. They didn't ask me what sauce I wanted, they just served it up. The plain sauce was just really bland, but I will try the mixed sauce or hot and see how that goes...
Standard Flaky Pie Crust - really not that hard?
OK. You guys will probably freak, but I stopped making my pretty-good homemade pie crust after discovering Pillsbury Unroll and Bake piecrust. This stuff is just so so good that I stopped being a pie crust purist and just keep this stuff in the fridge and use it on my gourmet tarte tatin, etc! It is really an excellent product (part of their secret is the lard they use in the crust...)
Philips BBQ is totally over-rated
Ok, all the BBQ threads here have pointed to Philips (on Crenshaw or Lamert Park) as the best BBQ in LA. I went there today and I was incredibly disapointed. I ordered pork ribs. The meat was tender and meaty, but the BBQ sauce was terrible! The sauce had a very bland tomato paste flavor. It had NO kick to it at all, no oomph, no complexity-- neither a tang, nor a smoky flavor, nor a spice, nor a nothin! It was like a crappy marinara sauce with a bit of brown sugar thrown in.
I was totally disappointed and can not understand what the big deal is about this place on all the foodie message boards. I went to J&R's a while back and thought it was so much better.
Do any Philips fans want to defend the place?
Any detractors want to jump on board with me and dis it!?
where can i buy a case of grapefruits?
i wanna buy a whole lot of grapefruit. somewhere on the westside or in sherman oaks/studio city would be good. do the farmers markets, like in santa monica, have grapefruits?
thanks
where to eat in watts?
hey hounds... where to eat in watts? can be a sit-down place or a taco shack or whatever. ideas?
thanks!
crunchy tacos
i know they are so not authentic... but i LOVE crunchy tacos... anyone have local non-taco-bell tips?
FAMIMA! now open in downtown LA [moved from L.A. board]
they have this little pastry, i forget the name, it is so good: it's a chocolate covered banana smothered in whipped cream in a twinkie-like pastry! it's so good.
Bar that serves food in Sherman Oaks or Studio City
I'm looking for a bar that serves food in Sherman Oaks or Studio City. It doesn't have to be good food... buffallo wings and french fries are fine. I'm getting some people together later this week for my b-day and don't want to deal with a sit-down restaurant. It could be swank or a dive, I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks.
any boston style icecream places in la?
fosellman's is 30 miles away from me! ok, i am just gonna have to wait for toscaninis when i go to boston this xmas, and i don't care if it's 20 below zero...
any boston style icecream places in la?
Thanks for all the interesting replies. "Real" (by bias of course) icecream is the ONLY thing I'm homesick for in Boston. I will check out Boule's ice cream (I love their macarons btw) and also Bennetts. By the way, ice cream is not just a summer thing in Boston. You would be shocked at how busy the ice cream places are in the dead of winter.
any boston style icecream places in la?
you know, something like heralds, jp licks, or toscaninis. NOT gelatto. NOT persian ice cream. NOT coldstone creamery. NOT gorganzolla icecream.
i looked through some of the icecream threads here, but was was not sure if any of those places fit the bill.
best cucumber ever...at trader joes!
ok, this is totally random, but the persian-style cucumber sold in clamshell plastic containers at trader joe's are SO good. usually, i avoid produce from tj's, but these are the best cucumbers i have ever tasted! crunchy, delicate skins, great flavor, no bitterness. they were there a week or so ago, i'm still crunching through them. yum.
Natas Pastries (A Portuguese Bakery) in Sherman Oaks - Really Delicious!
i went again today, tried the donut filled with pastry cream. it is not called a cream danish, it has a portuguese name, which i forget of course. it was very good... but the natas are better. i especially like the MINI NATAS because there is a greater ratio of crunch to custard. also, the tops of the mini ones seem to get a bit more caramelized then the big ones.
Natas Pastries (A Portuguese Bakery) in Sherman Oaks - Really Delicious!
tried this place today. got a NATAS which was excellent. they sprinkle cinnamon and sugar before they serve it. i also tried a couple of the almond biscotti filled with chocolate ganache. they were decent, but not as fab as the natas. the other item that was highly recommended by other customers in the store is the "donut" filled with pastry cream, i can't remember what it is called but i'm definately trying it the next time. i so appreciate recomendations for places in sherman oaks/studio city/van nuys, so keep sharing! thank you.
Molinari Sopressata -- where to find it?
Does anyone know a place that sells Molinari and Son's soprasetta? I love it, but haven't been able to find it in LA yet.
