New French Patisserie in Jackson Heights

I went today at 5 pm with my mom and we really liked it. The pasteries were beautifully presented, the music was very low and hardly noticable and the seating was comfortable. Spacious, clean and affordable and very tasty from what we tasted. We tried the coffee and the tea a chocolate chip cookie and italian bread. All was great. We plan to go back early in the day and try more pasteries etc. By the way the service is very friendly.

need restaurant recommendation with good food and atmosphere as well

out of towners are asking that I reserve for saturday night before new years. They want good food and good atmosphere kind of dressy etc. I think 100 per person would be the max-anything under would be better. Any cuisine or neighborhood would work. Keep in mind I need somewhere that a 2 week notice would be enough to reserve.

Thank you,

Good Israeli food in Brooklyn

The reason the food is virtually identical is because what is referred to as "Israeli food" is actually palestinian food.

Miriam's for brunch?

What exactly do you mean by authentic Israeli cuisine? Israel is very young -less than 60 years old? Do you Middle Eastern or Arab cuisine? If you are interested in this type of cuisine, you can go to El- Saj in brooklyn-very fun in evening at night, you can go to Tanoreen in Bay ridge for authentic Palestinian cuisine-a cuisine that has existed way longer than Israeli or you can go to Sally and george for solid lebanese.

Taste of Jackson Heights

It will be food from the neighborhood of course! They plan to have local vendors like sammy halal etc and other food from local restaurants and bakeries. The new coffee shop scheduled to open soon will also have their coffee. All items are between 1 and 3 dollars. This is part of the jackson heights film festival which will also be taking place between friday and sunday.

Wifi/Coffee in Queens?

The owner posted on the jackson heights family list serve. They had to switch contractors which took extra time and now she just gave birth so they are postponing the opening which should have already been. They will be at the jackson heights food festival with their coffee on the 30th of september. If you are anxious for a taste you can attend. It will be at the saint marks church on 34th avenue and 82nd street. Other vendors and restaurants from the neighborhood will be there and the food goes from 1-3 dollars.

Ideas for a catered Lebanese meal?

strips of phylo dough would not be conventional kinafe. This sounds more like kulaj. She may call it kinafe because it is her version. Before colonialism the whole area was one and were were then divided. Believe me when I tell you the cuisine is essentially the same, with minor differences. If you want a better idea of what Palestinian kinafe looks like go to laziza in astoria on Steinway. This is the closest or even better would be nablus sweets in Patterson new jersey. They have the best kinafe in the area. Nablus is a west bank town known for it's kinafe and kinafe can have a cheese or custard like filling and either a softer semolina like topping or a courser one. Nablus sweets is the best. I am glad tanoreen is doing well. Nothing like seeing a fellow Palestinian succeed.

Ideas for a catered Lebanese meal?

Palestinians and Lebanese ultimately share the same cusine. Lebanese may eat certain dishes more often such as kibbeh and may have slightly different names for the same dish but it is the same cuisine. My husband is Maronite Christian from the Part of Palestine that borders with Lebanon and I am a Palestinian Muslim from the West Bank. We are the same people with the same language, culture and the same food. The only difference between a Muslim and Christian is the Christian may drink liquor and occasionally supplement pork for lamb (because it is cheaper) while a Muslim does not eat pork or drink alcoholic beverages.

I am glad that you enjoy our cuisine. Hospitality is very important part of our culture and this plays into why Tanoreen is such a good hostess. Karam is good for certain street foods such as shawarma and the falafel is Ok. The manaeesh with cheese or zattar are good in the morning when he makes them, but I do not find his imjadara or tabouleh to be good.

I have not been to Tanoreen, but I may try it one day and see what I think. Since we can cook the meals ourselves, we rather eat asian food or french when we go out to try something new like you do.

Ideas for a catered Lebanese meal?

Lebanese christians and muslims alike have the same cuisine. being Arab I can tell you that Sahadi's delhi food is catered for American taste and is not as good as the food you would find in bay ridge where it is more geared for Lebanese and Arabs. I do agree that they have a very good business sense and that their shop is great.

I am going to lancaster with my four kids and want to go to the green dragon market. Is it a hellish nightmare for kids? Should I leave them at the hotel or take them with and what food options are there? Can we expect to eat there?

Thanks

Trade Fair Supermarkets - Best Items?

The halal meat is very very good. We buy it all the time and it is very fresh. MY husband gets lamb liver and eats it raw, so I mean it when i say fresh.

You can also get the middle eastern leban
e which is like a yogurt spread and it is very thick. You spread it on pita.

Williamsburg-Marlow & Sons, or Diner

I have been to both recently. I found marlow more original although their menu is more limited. The atmosphere is better as is the service. If you like what is on their chalkboard and you can afford it I would eat their instead of at the diner. I did not like my meal there and it was also quite pricy.

First time to Jackson Heights - lunch tomorrow

If you want to stay in Jackson heights proper and youre in the mood for thai, Arunee is a great choice. If you are in the mood for Indian then you may want to do a search for that here, there are many many good ones and I do not have a strong opinion since this would not be my favorite cuisine. If you are in the mood for chicken, then head over to pio pio where there is ambiance and pretty good food. If you like street food then you are in luck. You can have tacos fom a cart on the street or taqueria coatzingo. You can also have arepas or fresh fruit . Good luck and have a great time apartment hunting. The apartments are an even much better find than the food.

Flushing Chinatown - Main Street

I am not sure the name of it, but the noodle shop that I eat at and that was referred by a chinese friend is the one on main street accross from the starbucks but on the same side of the street. You really cannot miss it because it has a huge bowl on top of the building. This is always packed and I think their wonton noodle soup is the best. I beleive this place to be cantonese, but I am not an expert.

Did You KNow Le San Souci in Astoria closed down?

I went there for lunch today only to find them closing up and cleaning out. The manager/owner said she lost the cook who opened a restaurant in Port Washington. She said they tried several cooks since this happened in October but they were not any good. They sold the restaurant and are closing. I was not a huge customer, but I did like the place. The atmosphere was good and relaxing and the food was usually tasty. It is sad to see this happen.

damascus bakery and baklava

I am Arab and have been eating baklava all my life. I agree that Damascus is good for bread, but their baklava is only OK. It is doughy and not very good. I prefer Laziza when it comes to Baklava, although at thanksgiving we bought a prepared platter from them for our relatives that was not very fresh. I tasted two pieces, one was very fresh the other appeared stale. If I went again, I would insist on them preparing a platter in front of me and insist on the newest supply. My husband went in for it and he is not a great shopper. Anyhow. Laziza has the best around in my opinion, although I have definately tasted better.

Amish Fine Foods Market in Atlas Park Shops, Glendale?

Well I went to Amish market today after anticipating it's opening for four months now. I am happy to say that I thought it was pretty nice. It is not a Baldoucci or Zabars, but it is nice. They have a nice deli, what seemed to be a very good bakery with a wide variety of cakes and desserts. they have coffee bean selection and coffee to be purchased at the bakery. They have olives and such. Prepared foods did not look as gourmet as I thought they would, but I have yet to try them. The salad items I bought from the cold bar and sushi bar were tasty. They have a frozen food section, fresh produce and a small selection of fresh pastas and sauces. It is a nice design and a pleasant place to shop. You can also get fresh flowers at the adjoining dahlia flowers. After paying you can sit inside and in the future outdoors. They had plenty of cashiers, so their was a very short wait and although they were busy it was pleasant. They also have several items to sample from the various departments. Its a great place if you live in the neighborhood or if you happen to be going to the area to shop, but I am not sure if it is all that much worth it if you live far away.

Forgot to mention that although the prices are not cheap they are reasonable.

Middle Eastern Catering/Take Out

I am middle easterner myself. The closest that I have found to real lebanese cuisine in new york is at Sally & Georges in Bay Ridge. Although the damascus bakery is very good, it is pretty much only very good if you are buying bread or bread with cheese and bread with zaatar, which is a a thyme like spice that is spread on bread along with olive oil. If you want fod for a party , I would buy hummous, grape leaves (cold vegetarian version with olive oil) tabulleh, falafel, kibbeh and cheese pies. These dishes were last ordered for a party over a year ago. The food was very good. I also ordered meat pies, but did not like them so much, although the cheese pies were very very good. The cost to feed about 30 people was about 150 dollars and the food was very very good.

Although Sahadi's is a great market, it is not all middle eastern and their dishes like grape leaves and tabouleh are not very good. I also liked sally and georges restaurant better than those that I have tried on Atlantic avenue. In general. I think you will get better quality middle eastern food in bay ridge than either astoria or atlantic avenue. Good luck ordering and hope the party is a hit.
