two days in shibuya looking for sushi. ramen and yakatori

I just returned from Tokyo and in terms of food, what amazed me most, is that every place is delicious. I'm not exaggerating. I don't think they have bad restaurants in Tokyo.

Before I left I tried doing some restaurant research. However, I was coming up short. In all my fussing around the Internet I failed to find much by way of specific places, and if I did, I generally couldn't find multiple people commenting about the same place. My travel companion, who lived in japan for close to a decade, told me "it's not like that". I didn't understand until I was there. Now I get it.

First of all, there are so many places. Especially in an area like Shinjuku or shibuya, there are literally hundreds of places to eat. Multiple restaurants per floor of each building. I have a feeling that even if someone found the most delicious xxxxxx, at yyyyyyyy restaurant, finding that restaurant again would be a difficult task.

Additionally, everything is good. Literally. Every single restaurant is delicious. In 9 days, I did not have one bad meal. Japan knows how to eat. You cannot go wrong. Literally. (Note: I only ate japanese food while in Tokyo. Not sure if you'd have much success in western restaurants).

My advice is to decide on what you want to eat. Walk around, shop, take in some sights. While walking, when you find yourself hungry, find a place that has what you're looking for and go for it. You just can't go wrong. Have so much fun. I wish I was back there with you!!

I am reviving this post. Has anyone seen New York Seltzer anywhere lately? Does anyone know what happened to the brand?

Cauliflower soup. I found a great recipe on Food52 and substituted 3 cups of water with chicken stock. It was easy, delicious, creamy AND healthy!!

Solo dining recommendations in the Financial District/beyond

Gotham is my favorite place to dine alone at the bar. But I think the distance, whereas is completely walkable, warrants a cab.

Although I've never eaten there alone, and I haven't been there in quite a few years, The Harrison comes to mind for tasty downtown eating.

where can I find zucchini flowers?

I am just back from Italy where I formed a huge appreciation for zucchini flowers. I do not see them in the markets around here (Garden of Eden and Whole Foods, specifically). I plan to check the Union Square Greenmarket tomorrow. But am I searching too early? Will the markets carry them a little later in the season?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thank you!!

Pork Butt (No pulled pork, BBQ or smoked recipes)

I'm a big fan of Zak Pelaccio's Pork Shoulder With Maple Glaze:

It has a lot of stuff in it, but the flavors are so complex when it's finished. And the thai chilies give it an amazing kick.

Lively downtown spot under $50 per person?

What about Hearth? Without drinks, tax and tip I would estimate it's about $50 a person. It's super cozy in the winter. I had a birthday dinner there once with about 8 or 9 people and they were extremely accommodating and they handled it seamlessly.

GE Monogram kitchen stuff--any good?

I second complaints on the dishwasher. I have the 18'' W dishwasher. I stopped draining after the 4th time I used it. I need to call the repairman. What a pain.

Any Menus with Soft Shell Crabs?

Had the soft shells w asparagus and ramps today at Union Square Cafe. The ramps were conspicuously missing, but it was a delicious nonetheless. Two meaty nice sized crabs.

Lotus of Siam in NYC

Entrees were in the $26 - $30 range if I remember. We did not drink, were not charged for the appetizer, and it came out to around $63.

Lotus of Siam in NYC

I went tonight for dinner. They were serving their full menu. I went with 1 other person. We ordered 1 appetizer and 2 entrees. Appetizer: Thai Chicken Wings. Entree 1: Sea bass with drunken noodle. Entree 3: Crispy Duck Penang.

Everything was delicious. Fresh. Well prepared. Service has some hiccups, but I believe that is to be expected this early. I will definitely go back. Note however, that it is not cheap.

Should I take my girl out to a Steakhouse on first date? Teens

If what you mean is that you want to be at the bowling ally at 4:30, so then you can have a 1:30/2:00 pm lunch, take your time dining, and then stroll over to leisure time for an early afternoon of bowling, then I suggest Gotham Bar and Grill. It will make you look sophisticated and sexy, yet I think the menu is approachable and that the restaurant will make you feel welcomed there.

I definitely would not go to a steakhouse. As a single woman, I have been taken on quite a few dates to steakhouses and find it a complete turn off - the atmosphere is just too masculine for a date. It gives the impression that the man only is thinking about himself when he makes that choice, and not what the woman may like. Bad move. Think about what she wants when choosing the restaurant.

Mikey's Burger on Ludlow

I am by no means a burger connoisseur, but I tried Mikey's tonight and really enjoyed it.

I ordered the BLT burger with cheese, which is a hamburger with chinese bacon, kewpie mayo, lettuce and tomato. The burger itself was juicy and flavorful on its own. But the bacon and kewpie made it a little different than just your average burger. The flavors all worked together very nicely - and the lettuce and tomato were crisp and bright and fresh.

The fires are thin cut with the skin on, and in my opinion, salted to perfection. They were a little soggy, but I did take out - so I'm thinking they make have gotten a little soggy on during the walk home.

help at russ & daughters?

I like the gaspe nova. It's mild. Ask for it fatty. I also like the baked samlon, again ask for it a fatty piece. Both are very consistent. The sturgeon has been terribly inconsistent, so if you're going for sturgeon, ask if it's good first. ANd you should definitely get a herring in cream sauce. And a chub.
